5 out of 5 eggsSolid performer

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

Pros: This inexpensive router has done an outstanding job over the two and a half years I've owned it. I use it with both mac and pc devices, as well as android. It has always been trouble free and it isn't hard to get up and running. Thumbs up all the way around on this one. Why pay more if this has what you need?

Cons: not so great with the media reader.

2 out of 5 eggsVery disappointed

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

Pros: Relatively easy setup.
Dual-band.
Gigabit ethernet.

Cons: Terrible wireless (both bands). The wireless range is depressing. The wireless connection is depressing. Drops every 5-20 minutes. Tried flashing with DD-WRT and the wireless is even worse. At least with stock firmware devices can at least connect (usually). Whomever tested this router with DD-WRT and said it was "compatible" needs to go back to school.

Other Thoughts: This router uses an Atheros chipset. Figured I'd give it a try since I've had Atheros NICs and never had a problem. Learned my lesson on that.

My previous router was a Linksys WRT54GL. Best router I've had thus far. It had a Broadcom chipset. Strong signal. No drops. Ever. Constant throughput.

I returned the TP-Link and researched which routers had Broadcom chipsets. I landed on the Asus RT-N66U. So far so good. Super strong signal and no drops (on either band). My smart TV connects instantly. With the TP-Link, it would not let my TV connect and sometimes I would have to reenter the WPA2-PSK.

I have experienced both Marvell and now Atheros chipsets, both terrible. I highly recommend using only Broadcom chipsets for routers. I know I will now. Broadcom is love, Broadcom is life.

4 out of 5 eggsIt is a decent router!

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

Pros: Easy to set up
Reasonable price
2.4 + 5 GHz
Pretty good signal strength

Cons: Honestly, this is not the best router you can get. However, for the money I pay, I am not going to complain on anything.

Other Thoughts: If there's a version which has dual band + triple antenna as to boost coverage, it would be good.

Come to think of it, TP-Link may have such option. However, Newegg may not put it out there obvious enough to let me see and choose it. I dunno... Bottom line, if I can pay a bit more and have better wifi coverage, that would be perfect!

2 out of 5 eggsGood but fails at 1 thing...

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

Pros: Nice design, very easy interface, and it does not drop connection even with a lot of devices pulling on the wifi.

Cons: Even at full bars, HD streaming is awful. For about an hour it will stream without problem, but then it will buffer every few seconds for the next hour for no noticeable reason. I live out in the country so I know there are no noise on the wifi frequencies that cause it, and signal strength bars remain at 80% or higher. This router was an upgrade from my NETGEAR WGR614 (1/8th the speed), but it does not do as good of a job.

Other Thoughts: I am really disappointed in this router. I thought for certain that it was a problem with my settings. However, after exhausting the TP-Link website and emailing back and forth with tech support, there have not been any explanations as to why this router cannot stream HD video.

3 out of 5 eggsWhile it worked it was ok

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

Pros: Fast, gigabit wired speeds, dual wireless connections. Easy setup. Able to hook up printer/hd to usb port..

Cons: 5ghz not that powerful..router has stopped working after 15 months

Other Thoughts: It worked stable upto about 15 months and than it would just restart, drop network connection. I purchased it in 2/13 today 12/06/14 router powers up but will not connect to internet. I have upgraded the firmware to new firmware, still no luck. wired or wireless shows limited connection. Have opened the ticket with support, will keep you posted.

5 out of 5 eggsLiked the first one so much I bought two more

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

Pros: Price was very reasonable for the feature-set.

Wifi range seems decent but I can't get a signal in the room furthest away from the router. The house is L shaped so the signal needs to basically pass through two exterior walls and both of the rooms in between are tiled, so I'm not that disappointed with range considering the environment.

I plugged an external drive into the usb port and it was super easy to setup a shared drive so all my computers can backup to it across the network.

Media server functionality works great! I download movies and music and save them to the network drive and can watch them on my PS3, tablet, etc

Cons: Make sure your router has the latest firmware installed. I got a significant increase in wireless performance after installing the last firmware update. My PS4 was getting like 2-4mb up and 16-22mb down and after the update I was getting about 6mb up and about 33mb down. I also had some issues with the wireless setup, but after the latest firmware I noticed that the admin interface was tweaked and that it automatically (and correctly!) setup both 2.4g and 5g wireless networks.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I am extremely happy with the wireless performance of this router. I have now purchased several of these units as gifts for family and to setup as a repeater in the back room of the house.

5 out of 5 eggsRock solid

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

Pros: Third party firmware support, excellent performance, rock solid uptime.

Cons: Initial manufacturer firmwares were reported to be flakey, WiFi range is typically not rated the best in its class.

Other Thoughts: Before upgrading to the latest version of OpenWRT I checked my uptime which was 388 days on this thing!!! I can't stress enough how good this thing is with OpenWRT simply due to QoS and CoDeL support. No matter what is being downloaded it still is able to process all http requests, VoIP, etc without any hiccups. Very very good device.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a Longterm Solution (Lasted 90 days)

This review is from: TP-LINK TL-WDR3600 Dual Band Wireless N600 Router, Gigabit, 2.4GHz 300Mbps+5GHz 300Mbps, 2 USB port, IP QoS, Wireless On/Off Switch

Pros: The speeds were great for a few weeks. Great that it supported DD-WRT.

Cons: It seems to drop connections constantly. I used to have a solid connection on the 2.4GHz band with 5 iPhones, 2 iPads, an iMac, an Xbox and Wii while keeping my work NAS and MacBook Pro on the 5GHz band. Now I can't get a connection at all in my basement and being in the same room with the router, the 2.4 GHz band will drop constantly and the 5GHz band only seems to be decent if you are in the same room with the router.

Other Thoughts: I've flashed this router to install the latest TP-Link firmware when they are released and finally flashed it to DD-WRT to see if that would fix the connection issues. I've determined it is a hardware issue, at this point and regret buying this model. All of this makes me leery of TP-Link, now.

Pros: Lots of options in user interface. I don't have to fiddle with it.
