5 out of 5 eggsCan't complain

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: I'm pretty happy with it so far. I've had it for about a week now and I can't complain about anything. But to be fair, I have actually pushed it yet so we'll have to wait and see.

I've noticed a lot of comments about the track pad but I personally haven't had any issues with mine. The only thing I was worried about prior to purchasing this machine was the track pad. Maybe I got lucky and got a solid machine.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: For the price, I'm pretty happy with the purchase so far.

4 out of 5 eggsVery good! Only one issue.

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: All around awesome high quality built laptop. It has I similar body to a Macbook Pro, and plays games in decent quality. The only issue I've had is the track-pad not working. There is a track-pad enable/disable button, but that doesn't seem to do anything (yes I've gotten the latest drivers. Luckily it works fine with mice, although it's still a bit inconvenient. Over all though, I'd give it a thumbs up.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat, but not without flaws

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: Most of what I say is probably going to be a rehash of other reviews here.

-For the power that it packs, it is quite slim and light.
-All USB ports are 3.0, making external HDD more usable (assuming the external supports 3.0, of course).
-Minimal bloatware and what is there is easily removeable.
-Boot time from the SSD is fast, about 5-10 seconds.
-Case is understated, classy, and feels sturdy.
-Quiet and cool during nongaming use.
-Turbo Boost automatically overclocks CPU, up to 3.2 ghz, when needed.
-Handles most games with ease. You may need to lower the settings on some very demanding games though, The Witcher 2, for example. But then again, raw power isn't the point of this laptop.
-Onboard speakers are better than average.

Cons: -Keyboard layout is odd. Windows button is on the left, the Right arrow key is part of the numpad territory, and other oddities.

-The large screen is great for gaming, but makes it difficult to carry and will only fit into the largest bags. If you're used to an everyday laptop, this will still feel a bit heavy and bulky, although not nearly as much as other gaming laptops, an Alienware 17, for example.

-Puts out a lot of heat during gaming. Probably inevitable given the form factor (slim case = small vents). Heavy gaming will make this laptop uncomfortably hot, and may require a stand or playing on a desk. The fans will work overtime, making a noticeable amount of noise.

When the heat becomes too much, it will automatically throttle performance to compensate. In 2 weeks of almost daily use, this has only happened once so far. It was during a multi-hour gaming session (Assassin's Creed IV), the laptop was well ventilated and in a cool room. It's a smart safety feature, but ideally, it shouldn't be necessary.

-Performance is throttled when running on battery power with no option to remove this throttling. I can sometimes hear it spool up when I plug in.

-It seems that the wifi turns off when the case is closed, even when I specify in the power options that closing the case should do nothing. This means when I want to "set it and forget it" overnight for a large download, such as a large Steam game, I have to leave the case open, and turn off the screen instead, which seems to work.

Other Thoughts: -Turn the Palm Tracking setting to its absolute minimum to solve most of the trackpad problems.
-Remember, no disc drive. Funny enough, it comes with a disc with drivers. No need for it though, all necessary drivers are already installed.
-Keyboard backlights are fully adjustable.
-The hybrid power option (will draw both AC power and battery power when power requirements exceed AC output) is interesting, though I can't see myself needing it.
-Be sure to install programs to the /D drive (the HDD). By default, most programs will try to install to the /C drive (the SSD), which at 128 GB, will fill up quickly with large programs, such as games.

4 out of 5 eggsLove It

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: Needed a new computer to handle MMOs and wanted a general upgrade. Was pleasantly surprised to find out Win 8.1 wasn't as bad as everyone says. MSI's walkthroughs were thorough and easy to use. Runs cool, good ventilation. Little bit of heat output during gaming but nothing like my old system, and is nearly icy the rest of the time. Well worth what I paid for. With en external drive I purchase I've had no problems installing new programs and of course downloading works fine. The upgrade from Win 8 to Win 8.1 was flawless and the Killer Gaming Network card is excellent - I downloaded the upgrade with two people in the house also playing an MMO at the same time, and the download only took about 2.5 hours (with all the updates to install as well). Very pleased with the location of the keyboard and the overall look of the computer. And it is very light!

Cons: No optical drive - knew that going in, so picked up an external drive cheaply for some of my program installs. Otherwise I rarely use an optical drive so this wasn't a big deal to me.

Keyboard has one or two small tactile issues for me, particularly the number pad is awkward due to the small size of the zero key, and there is a squeak using the spacebar. Given the reputation of steelseries I expected better.

Graphical interface was a bit wonky with games. I play SWTOR and the GUI overlay was shrunk and the system kept trying to automatically put me to low graphics. Took a bit of configuring to make the system realize to the GTX card and not the onboard graphics chip. This was the most frustrating part of set-up. I don't know if this is 'standard' on a gaming rig and I've just never owned one before, or if this was something with the way the system was installed, but it really annoyed me that the system required me to make it realize there was a graphics card as opposed to working right out of the box. This plus the squeak on the spacebar lose this an egg from 5.

Other Thoughts: Win 8 is a bit to get used to but hardly the computer's fault. I already tell everyone I know I love it. I do love the backlit keyboard.

4 out of 5 eggsAfter 4 months of ownership

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: Nice Machine. Great specs for price. No buyers remorse.

Cons: Track pad is still bad.

Sleep problems. I close the lid (or sleep from menu), put it in the laptop bag, Stupid hot when I take it out half hour later. Happens approx. 25% of the time

Optimus technology doesn't mesh with PoE (Still shows HD4000), but every other game I have tested it works fine.

Hot. Hot. Hot Like I mean when it's cold my girlfriend gets a heated blanket. I just cuddle up to the laptop and the power brick. Can get uncomfortably hot when gaming.

Power connector on the mouse side. Like really? It also blocks the exhaust port with the cylinder on the cord.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat lightweight gaming notebook

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: -Solid Build
-Decent LCD panel (not amazing, but very good)
-Fast machine with great gaming capabilities for a notebook
-Multiple Drive capable. I plan on getting 2 480GB crucial mSATAs while still having the 750GB model. Which btw is 7200rpm as to the 1TB version is only 5400 rpm.
-Backlit keyboard is a nice touch.
-Video card power light status indicator is awesome how it changes from amber to white nvidia amber/intel white
-Being thin and lightweight for a 17inch laptop with this kind of power is just outstanding.
-Power brick is small for a laptop if this caliber. Love it.
-Abundance of ports is a plus for me. Running 3 displays is easy

Cons: -Windows 8. I hate windows 8 and installing windows 7 was easy and well supported with drivers on MSI's website.

-Touchpad. It isn't the worst out there, but I hate it when the left/right mouse buttons are combined with the touchpad. When you go to click things, worse with a right click, the cursor might jump on you because of the stroke of the button and the fact that your finger might budge a tad moving the cursor. Can get annoying. Only way to fix it is to have 1 finger already near the button site and touching the pad, then move the cursor with another finger and then click.

-Keyboard issues. My spacebar did not register very well on the right side of the key. I carefully removed the space bar and put 3 layers of electrical tape under the key where the membrane plunger sits. Now it works really well. I no longer have issues typing on this keyboard. It is decent, not very rigid, but good enough for me to speed type this review.

-The chassis has a very slight bend in it. Not really a big deal to me, but some might be annoyed if they get this.

- The aluminum cover on the lcd panel has a semi-sharp edge where the plastic bezel around the lcd meet the metal. Not enough to cut yourself, just a little unrefined.

-Front LED indicator lights are bright. I used a sharpie to dim them down.

Other Thoughts: Notice how I gave it a 5 star review even with all the cons?

Mainly because I am not a picky customer and I had somewhat of an idea what I was getting into with this laptop. I am one of those rare customers that focuses on the POSITIVES and not the negatives of the product.

For all of you out there that give this laptop 1 to 2 eggs should RMA it continue living their tortured lives.

This day and age, customers act like little brats. So sad. Boo hoo! "Why is my 1500 dollar laptop not built like a 3000 dollar laptop?" Boo Hoo!

3 out of 5 eggsProblem with desktop menu, space bar doesn't work half of the time, bad touch pad.

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: Im very happy for the spec, the ssd storage go very fast, the resolution is epic, the 16 go ram make me run many applications in the same time. The GTX 765 make me run many games and I really like the 17" wide screen to watch some video. I like how the computer is light to transport it.

Cons: I think that MSI could have done a better touch pad, it is pretty impossible to use it, if I would not have a mouse it would be infernal.

I don't know if it is my computer but I am really disapointed about the space bar on the keybord. Half of the time when i press on it it doesn't do anything and I primary bought this PC for my university courses do dissertations. I lose a lot of time because when I am writting I always need to go back to put the space. I need to press really hard on it and on the middle or it won't work. Finally there is some bug with my desktop menu, there is often error and my application get deleted from it or don't want to start.

One more thing, I think that the cooling system is not the best, If I run a game too long, after a certain amount of time it start to freeze and bug, even if it is not the best graphic game.

Other Thoughts: If it would not have been about the keybord it would have been really nice, but because it was my first concern when I bought this PC I am really disapointed.

It is my first purchase on NewEgg and I find that there is a lack on the custommer service.

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Laptop with some small issues.

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: Quick boot up and over fast laptop due mainly to the SSD drive, i7, and 16 gb memory. Actually the machine not used for gaming but would easily handle many of the most demanding games on high settings. The machine was purchased for the 17" 1920-1080 HD screen, for great picture and video playback.

Cons: 1. Space bar - left side works, right side does not work about 50% of the time, and LED under right side of space bar is not lit.
2. Screen - At 1 month of use 1 dead pixel. I know that most RMAs do not cover a single dead pixel, however to say this is normal is wrong. I support hundreds of desktops with LCD monitors and laptops on a daily basis and none have ever had dead pixels. This includes my personal TVs, monitors, and those of friends and family.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Happy

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: This machine is a dream. It's thin, sleek, and powerful. Let me say this again: it's a THIN, SLEEK, GAMING machine. Very rare. It boots up in just a few seconds - thanks to the SSD - and of course goes to sleep equally as fast. There are a couple other similarly svelte machines out there that are pretty powerful, but perhaps not at this price. It's also surprisingly lightweight. Windows 8 (as compared to Win 7) is very usable and I haven't had any problems with it.

Cons: The touchpad driver is pretty bad. Physically it's ok, but the driver is calibrated really strangely and it makes the pad pretty unresponsive for rapid movement. I typically use a mouse though, so for me this isn't enough of an issue to remove a star.

Other Thoughts: It gets warm when gaming, but it's nothing serious. If you're used to a gaming machine, then this won't bother you at all.

I don't miss the optical drive. Not having one makes the whole computer smaller.

I plan to install another SSD in the available card slot when I get a chance.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat workstation and Gaming laptop

This review is from: MSI GS70 2OD-001US Gaming Notebook Intel Core i7 4700HQ (2.40GHz) 16GB Memory 750GB HDD 128GB SSD NVIDIA GeForce GTX 765M 2GB 17.3" Windows 8

Pros: Light (5.5lbs)
Thin
Fantastic screen
Good keyboard
As good of windows track pad as one can get
Win 8 great with StartisBack
Battlefield 4 is stunning at 1600x900 on HIGH (to keep FPS up)

Cons: track pad could be as good as Apples
No touchscreen
Bluetooth seems to drop mice once in a while
Win8 needs a start menu
Odd place for

Other Thoughts: Basically more than I hoped for - which is a good thing. I use it extensively as a desktop replacement for writing, PowerPoint, excel, etc along with gaming (mouse or 360 gamepad)

As some decent at BF4 (rank 21), I can definitely compete (usually as engineer) well at 1600x900 and a mix of med-ultra settings. As one of the most demanding games, this is great. The 765m is stronger than I expected and the newer beta drives made a huge difference in performance.

Others have had keyboard problems. Thankfully I have not - maybe got lucky. Love the screen ( I am someone who buy expensive TVs and has them calibrated so I appreciate a good screen). SSD is fast. 750GB/7200RPM fast.

Basically does the job better than I thought. Since I almost always use a BT mouse the less than Apple quality track pad is irrelevant for me.
