Question 1

I thought that this laptop came with a one year warranty, but at checkout it tells me that I can purchase warranty separately. Does this mean that warranty does not then, in fact, come with the product, or that there are simply more options there, if I should want them?

It comes with a warranty from ASUS.  You can buy an additional extended warranty from Newegg.  I have used ASUS products for several years and they are built like a tank,  never had any of them fail.

Question 2

If I buy this laptop with the standard hard drive can i upgrade it to an SSD later on? And if so, which ones are compatible with this laptop?

You can upgrade to an SSD since there is another hard drive slot. I cant guarantee which SSDs are compatible, I would assume most since this laptop accepts the latest specs on SSDs. Let me warn you, you will have to buy a new Windows 8 code/download/disk since Windows 8 has a security feature that wont let you copy the OS to new hard drives, if you plan on putting the OS on the SSD. I personally used Crucials website scanner that showed me the compatible SSDs they have. But like I said, the latest and greatest SSDs will most likely be compatible with this laptop.

Question 3

Does it have a touch screen?  I need a gaming laptop, with touch screen, solid state drive, i7 quad core, 8-16GB ram, & nVidia GeForce 2GB.  I am comparing ASUS, Alienware & Dell XPS-15 touch.

No it is not touch screen. If that is a must have for you then this is not the machine, but otherwise it is a fantastic computer. It is extremely easy to upgrade RAM and HD (to SSD or bigger SSD or dual SSD or whatever you want).

Question 4

Does it come with a windows 8.1 CD or key? if i want to install an SSD and install windows 8.1 in it, do I have to buy a new windows 8.1 disk?

Hi,
There is no cd key. Windows comes installed already. The hard drive that comes on it is pretty slow and I couldn't tolerate it. To install an ssd you need to use asus backtracker that is installed on the laptop and copy the factory settings on to a USB 16gb or greater. This was my first time changing a hd and it was pretty simple. Make sure when you put in the ssd that you take out the other hd from the bay. Plug in the ssd, turn on the computer and it should start installing on its own with the same windows key found on the other hd

I do not see a visible way of replacing the battery.  Does this laptop have a built-in battery or is it replaceable?

It is replaceable, very easily. Pops in and out of the bottom with a switch.

Hi, I'm aware this is a gaming laptop but I'm planning on using it for mechanical design, like Autodesk Inventor and I'm a little concerned about the temps I might be getting. Would this machine work ok with that kind of software without turning itself into an oven? thanks in advance!

The ventilation on this computer is excellent.  Even after hours of hard gaming it will be cool to the touch.  You can feel the heat that is being pushed out of rear vents but that is it.  I have had 3 gaming laptops over the years and the ventilation system in this is beyond any of the other ones.  I have also used this for HD video conversion, which uses allot of processing power, and still no heat.  When I first got I took it on my back porch and gamed.  It was about 78 degrees outside and the laptop started to collect dew on it.  Cold to the touch.  It actually prevents me from gaming on my porch any more.  Note;  I have seen some older models that looked the same but had a different ventilation.  The rear vents weren't open.  I imagine those would heat up quite a bit more.

Every wireless router I connect to on a daily basis are 802.11G routers, is the 802.11AC (that is in this laptop) able to connect to the G routers?

what colors are the backlit keyboard?

I believe its only the default white color. I could be wrong as I have only had this computer for about a week. I see something online in which other owners talked about how you can download some driver or program to change the color but then you would be voiding your warranty.

2 x 500 GB HDD or 1 x 1 TB HDD on this PC?

It comes with a 1TB drive and also has an empty bay with bracket for expansion (SSD is ideal).
