Question 1

The description says it can scan A3 size paper, but it also say it can only scan 8.5in wide. Which is it? A3 is 11in x 17in.  Is 11x17 possible?

In 'Normal' mode you can scan:
A4, A5, A6, B5, B6, Business card, Post card, Letter, Legal and Com sizes (Max: 216mm x 360mm (8.5in. x 14.17in.), Min: 25.4mm x 25.4mm (1in. x 1in.)) / Automatically recognizes document size

With a 'Carrier Sheet' then you are permitted the scanning of A3, B4, double letter and photographs.  The Carrier Sheet allows you to scan documents that
cannot be physically scanned such as a document
larger than A4 up to A3 or 11 x 17 (single side), by folding it in two, inserting it into the Carrier Sheet and
using duplex mode.

I believe that you have to purchase the ScanSnap Carrier Sheet Option.

Does it work wirelessly?

No. It connects to your computer via a single USB cable. This cable also powers the scanner, so there is no separate power cable. It's not a fast scanner (I have it set to its highest quality setting-- overkill, really-- and this slows it down), but I really like its very small size. I use it for scanning in documents, for which it has more than enough resolution.

It comes with some handy PDF management software you can use for merging or separating PDFs created with the unit, but know that it will not edit PDFs *not* created with the unit.

Question 3

It's not TWAIN compatible, but does it have some software built in?  So if I move it from my home to my office, I can just plug it in and it'll work?  Or do I have to bring the disk around and install the drivers? Someone said something about no disk and it's suddenly a paperweight...?

I had the scanner for almost a year with no problems.  The scanner is great, but as a portable scanner it has its limitations.  I use it strictly when I travel and need documents scanned.  I would not use it as an office scanner unless your scanning needs are limited. Feeding the paper takes a little practice.  In my office desk I have a Fujitsu S1500. You can initially set up the scanner in multiple PCs or Macs and it will plug and play thereafter without the need to setup the scanner again. I am very please with the scanner.

Can I save the scanned paper into a PDF?

Yes, PDF is the standard for scanning docs on the S1100. You can also scan in many other formats. We've got about 20 of the S1100's and everyone loves them Stuart! You will not be disappointed!

Question 5

The "overview" page states the scanner will scan from "an inch up to 34 inches" long but the "specification" page states the max scan is is 14.17 inches. So which is it? Will this scan a single contract that is 8.5 inches wide x 24 inches long into a single PDF file?

I've never needed to scan anything longer than legal size paper.  This is a very good question and I'm eager to find out the answer myself.
There is no paper size setting longer 14.17 inches under the ScanSnap Manager.  So I leave it at "automatic detection"  and try to scan a 22 inches brochure (which is the longest piece of paper I can find).  I fed the brochure through the scanner, and it stopped after scanning about three-quarters of the way.  Then a pop up window "Paper jam occurred".   The window tells you to open the top cover  and remove the document.  Also, "If the document length is longer than 14.17 in., click the [Quit] button and hold down the [Scan] button on the ScanSnap   until it flashes in blue, then start over from the first sheet".   
I did exactly as it says on the screen and was able to scan the 22 inches long brochure into a single PDF file.  I think if you just follow this procedure, you should be able to scan paper that is up to 34 inches long.

Are there any software out there that this scanner is compatible with similar to the neat scanner where it reads receipts?
