1 out of 5 eggsNice looking, Zero support

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: It is a very nice looking case, looks great in a gaming center.

Cons: I have a serious issue with the built in motherboard. They all have the same physical MAC address. I've contacted ASRock every way I can and have not gotten any response at all. I may have to return all 10 to Newegg if I can't get this resolved.

Other Thoughts: Would be great if either a) everything worked right or b) support existed. Unfortunately, it doesn't.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsDecent rig at a decent price

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: Form factor, good looks, high customization to your needs as all components replaceable, low noise and stays cool, lots of expand-ability from lots of ports and hard drive slots, great uefi for OC, price was very good (paid 200 for case, psu, mobo(sound,b/t,wifi built-in), dvd r/w, and software suite)

Cons: a-command is buggy. form factor necessitates more complex dis-assembly for upgrading graphics, motherboard, so on. Proprietary mobo (great mobo from my experience, just need another asrock z87 or z97 if you want to upgrade or replace). hit or miss with DOA units. stock fan configuration is silly, but works.

Other Thoughts: I've owned this pc for about 3 months.
Pentium g3258, OC'd to 3.5, stock fan
16gb corsair ram (2x8 gb so-dimm)
250gb samsung 850 ssd
msi gtx 750-ti
logitech k830 keyboard
ps3 controller and bt dongle

It suits my needs very well as a casual gamer and web development student. It can play most older games on ultra settings v-syncing with my 29 hz 1080 tv at 29fps, much higher with no v-sync. bioshock infinite benchmarks in the 90-100 avg range.
load temps never exceed 60, usually 50-55. again, small processor with modest overclock. and btw the msi gtx 750 ti is fantastic; quiet, cool, low power, high performance for my needs on this rig. Just wish i could see it better in the pc because it color matches the m8 and looks sweet.

Runs adobe cs6 like a dream.

It is quieter than my fat ps3, even playing games, and about the same as my old macbook when both at idle.

The first one i received was DOA, smashed case due to careless handling, i suppose. Newegg paid for shipping and got one out in a week, so of course I was bummed but they honored their policies so kudos. Even got my return expedited by contacting support staff who was friendly and helpful.

The second unit was not without issue, I had bios issues and the front usb port was not connected at all (took me a month to figure that out. Easy enough to fix, open the computer, clear the cmos, and plug in the front panel. oh, and flash the bios from the files on their support site.

It was fairly easy to build, considering this was my first ever. Considering the motherboard was already installed and cable managed well, the fact that one has to remove the top of the unit was worth the minor hassles.

would have received five stars if not DOA and poor quality control. Oh, and asrock support was helpful at first, then transferred my support ticket to HQ and i never heard back... so I woulda rated it 3 stars, like the rest, but I'm just so satisfied with this rig for the price and my personal configuration and cpu/gpu upgrade potential.

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: Price was good

Cons: Onboard audio failed within 10 weeks

Other Thoughts: I am still waiting to hear from AsRock. All of the audio jacks are dead.

3 out of 5 eggsNice Machine after Third Try

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: Newegg is the best. The first one I received the A command did not work. The second one had a bad motherboard. Finally the third works like a charm. All I can say is thank you Newegg for the quick turn around on returns.

Cons: ASRock support is virtually non existent. They sent an email telling me to contact the merchant for tech problems and returns.Shame on you Asrock.

Other Thoughts: My son wanted a small form factor pc for his dorm room the M8 works well finally after three tries.I can not give it five stars only because Asrock customer support is so bad.If only I could give Newegg support a rating they are worthy of Five Stars they really came through for me.

4 out of 5 eggsBarebones Beast

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: Powerful performance from an SFF box. Beautiful design, great portability. The handles EASILY support the entire weight of the case, making this super portable.

Cons: Fan orientation- there fans on each end of the unit, one intake the other, exhaust. On BOTH ends. While this is correctable, it's troublesome to have to disassemble the frame to flip each fan. I set the CPU side of the case to intake, the GPU side to exhaust.

With stock Mobo, and a larger cooler, CPU 4pin, cpu fan and corner Mobo screw are EXTREMELY difficult to access.

4 out of 5 eggsFun little machine, though a bit hot

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: Everyone knows that this is an awesome looking case. Some other benefits that may not be as widely known:
- Came with an updated BIOS that supports Devil's Canyon CPUs
- All cable management is done, which makes building very easy
- Stock Intel heatsink/fan fits
- Graphics card is very easy to install (you don't have to remove the riser card, just open the top and pop in the card). I used a Gigabyte GTX 960.
- Surprisingly tolerable noise at desktop

Cons: - Not much ventilation down by the CPU so it runs pretty hot. I used an i5 4590S (65 watts TDP) and it gets in the mid 70's at load.
- Motherboard would have to be removed to install CPU backplate for aftermarket CPU cooler
- Power Supply has to be unscrewed in order to access one of the 2.5 inch bays. If you're going to use a 3.5 inch drive in the top bay, then your 2.5 inch OS drive has to go behind the PSU.
- Gets pretty loud and hot during extended gaming sessions

Other Thoughts: Overall, an awesome product, but not a good value at the original price.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat PC gaming rig for strong power efficient

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: - DESIGN / SIMPLICITY
- small, yet can pack very strong setup
- easy to configure as you want

i got mine as open box from here and saved big $$$
I did not want complete custom with random case, these look really nice and fairly easy to take apart and setup with parts you require. running i5 Haswell 65W and GTX 980 MSI. excellent rig for ULTRA on 1440p gaming.

Cons: - default fan exhaust / intake direction design

look up asrock m8 review on youtube, also on the vents diagram on airsick web. i've reversed the top fans to both blow outside, rather then one in / one out as it was by factory. definitely breaths better this way. was not able to fix the bottom fans that way. now runs stable.

Other Thoughts: ASROCK needs to fix the fan issues and optimize cooling with doing proper testing on cooling etc.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat case, horrible Wifi

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: Compact, strong metal, great design & appearance. Using Pentium G3258 OC'd at 3.5 Ghz with stock fan, and the case is doing great keeping hot air out, despite the compact size. Usually I think that a case is a case, but this one make me feel like "hey, I got a cool case".

Cons: Horrible on-board wi-fi performance (getting barely 5Mbps if lucky). Tried everything from re-installing driver to making sure that antenna cables are srtraight and attached to the case. Ended up ordering an external USB wifi antenna. I know it's not my router problem because even my phone gives me solid 80Mbps, and my previous 802.11n card gave me 30-40 Mbps. This was a huge disappointment since on-board WiFi was one of the main decision makers for me to get this case.

Difficult to install components if you have big hands, and especially for me installing the 2.5" hard drive next to ODD was the most challenging. But which mITX case is not difficult to install components on?

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued ASRock Customer

Thank you for purchase and review.
For the Wi-Fi performance issue, please uninstall the Intel smart connect driver to check if its address the issue.

1 out of 5 eggsZero eggs

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: Case

Cons: Motherboard with defective memory slots
Unresponsive ASROCK service department

Other Thoughts: I received a unit with a defective motherboard. Newegg refuses to provide a replacement because I already sent the UPC code to claim the rebate and has directed me to contact Asrock. Contacting Asrock by phone has resulted in a promise to provide a link to the RMA request form (which was never provided) and a follow up call resulted in a message that their offices are closed (I called on Monday morning during regular business hours). Contacting the service department through Asrock's website resulted in an email suggesting that I return the product to Newegg. A follow up email from me to Asrock explaining that I needed to return the item to Asrock because the box was missing its UPC has been ignored. Unless Asrock can pull their act together, I will not be purchasing anything from them in future, and would suggest you steer clear of any Asrock products.

3 out of 5 eggsNice attempt at an SFF gaming barebones, but not perfect

This review is from: ASRock M8 Mini ITX Gaming PC 4th Gen Intel Core i7/i5/i3/Xeon/Pentium/Celeron Intel Socket LGA1150 Intel Z87 1 x HDMI Barebone

Pros: Cool looks and design. It has a "gamer" appearance which is subdued by the industrial look of the side panels and their use of aluminum. I like the use of a riser card for the GPU. That seems to be getting popular these days for achieving a thinner "console" appearance for SFF systems. The OLED dial is kind of cool, but also somewhat gimmicky. The fit and finish of the aluminum is great, the F/F of the steel interior is adequate as well. The motherboard is excellent in my experience. This is my first ASRock board and I'd have no issue going to them in the future. It's got a great selection of features and has been extremely stable. POSTs very quickly and has all the features you'd expect from the more expensive brands. The 450W power supply is also of high quality. It's an 80+ bronze FSP unit with a beefy +12v output. I originally put together a system using an i7 4771 along with a GTX 780 and the PSU handled it perfectly fine. This is actually beyond what ASRock recommends, but it ran without a hiccup for the few months I was using the 780. Don't let people tell you you need a 1KW unit for a high end GPU; as long as you're building a "normal" system (stock CPU, stock GPU, 1-2 drives, air cooling) you're more than okay with QUALITY lower wattage units. The high power consumption I saw from the wall was about 370W. Even assuming peak efficiency, that's only 325W DC output. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't recommend overclocking on a system like that with this power supply. But for a stock system, it will be fine for just about any single GPU you could fit in here. On that note, the clearance for GPUs in quite good. You should have no problems cramming a high end card in here. Lastly, even though the case may look confusing, the paperwork is excellent and documents how to install your components without issue. Even the process of building in it is easier than expected.

Cons: Unfortunately, this barebones isn't all good. Even though the case itself has some high quality use of aluminum, it uses far too much plastic in its construction. This isn't a problem in and of itself, but the plastic tends to creak as the system's temperature changes which gives off a bit of a "cheap" impression when the barebones is anything but when you see the price. The price is another point. The price would probably be appropriate if say the PSU were 80+ gold, more use of aluminum, way less plastic, etc. Instead, it feels overpriced by perhaps as much as $100. You can build a similar system from the Silverstone RVZ01 case, ST45SF power supply, an ASRock Z87 / Z97 ITX board, and a laptop DVD drive for less than $350. Maybe even less than $300. Probably the single largest issue with the case in the utterly poor cooling. The four 70mm fans are not only loud, but they don't cool well either. Reversing the fan positions helps, but is tedious to accomplish and the results aren't dramatic. Even though you can fit high end components in here, the cooling is really only up to the task of dissipating maybe a total power draw of 150W. Higher than that, and you'll probably want to leave the side panel off to let the system breathe. It's a bit nit picky, but this case isn't that particularly small for an SFF rig either. It could easily shed a couple liters of volume while supporting the same hardware.

Other Thoughts: I'd like to see a version 2 of the M8 in the future. I think this is the base of a really great product. If the use of plastic were toned down and cooling significantly improved it could be totally worth the asking price. It could definitely use some vents on the side panel. If you wanted to cut your own 120mm fan mount on the side panel you may even be able to install a 120mm closed loop liquid cooler.
