Inspired by MartinLogan's high-end electrostatic loudspeakers, the Motion Series was created to provide stunning sound for your ultimate-performance home theater or stereo. MartinLogan's dedicated in-house engineers carefully crafted the Motion Series to create an extremely affordable and compact product line that seamlessly blends their exquisite Folded Motion transducers with powerful, compact bass technology. The result is a smooth, refined sound with stunning dynamic range and jaw-dropping clarity.

Focusing on clarity and detail as MartinLogan's other high-end electrostatic loudspeakers, Motion 4 features an exquisite Folded Motion tweeter, powerful bass, and folded reflex port technology in a compact and affordable package. Key to Motion 4’s performance is the lightning fast response of the tweeter’s light-weight diaphragm combined with a large surface area (8-times that of a typical one-inch dome tweeter) which together achieve a smooth, refined sound with stunning dynamic range and jaw-dropping clarity - certain to inspire envy in audiophiles and non-audiophiles alike.

  • newegg Folded Motion Tweeter The Folded Motion Tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm "squeezes" air and requires almost 90% less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lightning fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.
  • newegg Folded Motion Cascading Bass Port Engineered by the genius MartinLogan engineers after many sleepless nights and a myriad of prototypes, the Folded Motion Cascading Bass Port allows a long tuned port, which is folded over itself (think of a trombone's tuning arm) to be compacted and squeezed into the Motion 4. This innovative design slows down and controls the air motion of the bass wave to create amazingly detailed low bass that can play at high volumes with minimum distortion.
  • newegg Premium Components Featuring 4-inch woofer, paper cone doped for stability and damping, and rigid dust cap, plus Precision Vojtko crossover with custom air core coil and low DCR steel laminate inductors, and polyester film and low DF electrolytic capacitors, the Motion 4 speakers delivers clear, highly dynamic and precise sound.
  • newegg Sexy Curves The elegant yet understated styling such as flawless high-gloss, piano black finishes and subtle curves, along with the signature perforated grille, gives Motion Series speakers an elegant and timeless look. The curves also allow Motion compact bookshelves to mount at two different angles with the included wall bracket (or with aftermarket using 1/4 x 20" threaded insert), so you can point sound directly toward the desired listening area for high or low wall mounting applications.
  • newegg Bookshelf or on-wall installation Besides bookshelf placement, the Motion 4 speakers can be mounted at ear level or near the ceiling with an easy-to-use wall mount bracket (included) to meet your variable listening requirements.
  • newegg Effortless Connection Convenient push-style binding posts and curved inserts help guide speaker wire effortlessly into place. The rubber end caps on the terminal are also removable for the use of banana plugs instead of bare wire.

Pros: This is an update to previous review. First a typo on speaker wire, it was 14AWG not 16ga reported due to the 30" distance for the back speaker (actually 12awg is technically better, just pay attention to distance, ohm rating for speakers n google it for chart on what ga wire to use with speakers)

Usage is now going on FOUR years.. those Motion 4 speakers (bought from EGG were a real deal) are fantastic for their clarity of sound, having that 'folded' tweeter provides best in mid range all way through highs past your hearing due to speaker design. Used at Front speakers in a 7.1 Martin Logan home theater per earlier review.

VALUE is there as you'd be hard pressed to find a BETTER speaker without spending a considerable amount of added $$$$ and/or going to a much larger speaker.

Cons: CONS : none really. You cannot make a very good SMALL speaker have the same quality and range of harmonics to provide sound quality that a really good LARGE speaker will have; however, a larger speaker of equal quality to the Small speaker it's being compared with, will invariably takes a good deal more from your pocket book. Do you have the space? Can you appreciate the difference in listening enjoyment? or (unless you're the government and can just print extra money to cover your deficit) can you afford the extra cost of the Larger 'better' sounding speaker?

Other Thoughts: Doing again, the entire setup would be Motion 4 despite the ML MLT-2 being such a good deal with great sound that far exceeds what the 5.1 system actually costs from the EGG.

The Yamaha 867 AV Receiver went south within warranty period and Square Trade despite their reputation did NOT honor the warranty (advised of problem more than 4 months BEFORE the warranty expired, and seven days before it expired, this reviewer EMAILED them this was not closed and still waiting for RMA and instructions to return the Yamaha to Square Trade... not on subject but info purchasers of electronic gear should have)

IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS ON THIS SPEAKER- FORGET THEM. PICK ONE UP AND CHECK THE WEIGHT OF MARTIN LOGAN MOTION SPEAKER TO ANY... REPEAT ** ANY ** OTHER SPEAKER CONSIDERED. (Old School way of checking when magnet weight was a serious factor in how a speaker sounded... from someone who designed his own 3-way speakers in mid-60's (12"woofer/ 6 " mid range / and 1" tweeter, using bass reflex box, 18"w x 24"h x 12"d......... and Altec Lansing Voice of Theater speakers in 1970 (spending 110-hours to built walnut boxes when factory built ONLY black painted plywood boxes mounted in theater ceiling, buying speakers and components from Altec, built to their exact specs except real care in caulking joints in overlapping soundproofing insulation paid off- my 30"w x 60"h x 24"d box sounded better side by side with A-L factory speakers in dealers showroom- another day..
speaker design has changed,, better sound from smaller boxes; however, "usually" <haven't seen or heard them all, and you listen to B&O A-5 speakers is in Twilight Zone for good tunes> all else is equal good larger speaker will outperform the smaller one of equal quality/design.

5 out of 5 eggsLove Them

Pros: Light, low distortion, small for what they do. LOUD.

Cons: Plastic, sounds better at higher volumes, very expensive when originally purchased. Takes a high powered receiver to get the most out of them.

Other Thoughts: I've had a 5.1 set of these for 3 years and I love them. I always liked floor speakers with heavy wood cabinets, and when I had to get a bookshelf system to save space, these fit the bill perfectly. I always get compliments on how good they sound. The louder you crank them, the better they sound. Pair them with a good sub-woofer.

5 out of 5 eggsMotion 4 speakers

Pros: Very good midrange and treble detail.

Cons: Not alot of low frequency extension, needs a sub

Other Thoughts: New Egg offers best price on these speakers. I had old Denon 3805 not in use and wanted to set up computer with a nice set of speakers for gaming and music. They are definitely upgrade from computer BA735 speakers i was using but u need a sub for the low freqeuncies.

4 out of 5 eggsA pleasant surprise

Pros: (purchased on 7/16/11)

I’ve been looking to upgrade the speakers in my humble 2.1-channel bedroom setup for several months. The receiver is an Onkyo CS-325 paired with two Yamaha NS-333 bookshelves and a Polk PSW-series sub. During my research, I considered products by Ascend Acoustics (I nearly settled on the CBM-170 SE), B&W, Def Tech, Energy, Klipsch, Paradigm, and others. Budget restraints keep me at or less than $500/pr. Since I recently purchased the excellent MartinLogan MLT-2 system from Newegg (check out my mini review there!), I gave ML another look for my 2-channel setup. I’ve wanted to try out the ML Motion bookshelves for a while, and the Egg’s sale prices (and free shipping) gave me the incentive I needed. I chose the Motion 4 over the 2 for the lower bass extension and higher sensitivity (the Folded Cascading Bass port also intrigued me). This bedroom system is 100% music and I figured the Motion 4 would provide more body and realism than the Motion 2.

continued be

Cons: Some quick background on me: I LOVE music. Although I don’t classify myself as a true audiophile (money is tied up elsewhere in living expenses), I strive consistently for the most accurate and neutral sound. I’ve done live audio for nearly a decade and spend my free time listening to music. While I’ve heard electrostats, the Motion 4 is my first AMT-type speaker. I am used to traditional cones, domes, piezos, and horns. I was anxious to try out the Motion 4s knowing that the legendary Heil transducers are highly regarded. The speakers arrived in perfect condition (two boxes, since they are not sold in pairs). Setup was a breeze and the push-type terminals are kind of neat for bare wire connections; it’s much quicker than screwing in binding posts. Mounting hardware is provided, but I chose to use my Auralex MoPADs instead. Break in requires ~72 hours @ 90 dB per ML manual (pg. 4). Once that was done, I ran my gamut of test material to see how the system responded.

continued below

Other Thoughts: Immediately obvious was the forward nature of the Motion 4 and what must be characteristic of AMT tweeters: the FM tweeter provides extremely detailed and articulate delivery of high-frequency information. It simply grabbed me by the ears. Thanks to the folded bass port, low-end was surprisingly better than expected.

A sample of testing:

Josh Turner – Long Black Train: tight and detailed walking bass, full-bodied voice, clean and clear upper end.
Joe Satriani – Summer Song: the Folded Motion tweeter brought incredible energy to lead guitar and high hat. Joe was performing in my bedroom.
Sarah Brightman – What a Wonderful World: a great demo for the M4. Sarah’s voice carried incredible clarity and detail.
Imogen Heap – Canvas: simply stunning, pure bliss.

…and I’m out of space. The Motion 4s might be too “bright” and forward for some, with slightly recessed midrange presence. However, the sonic detail demands attention. I may still give the Ascends a try, but I'm keeping the

Pros: Due to a recent purchase of Martin Logan's MLT-2 really fantastic 5.1 Home Theater Speaker system, I was in the market for a pair of speakers, to round out the 7.1 system available on the Yamaha RX-V867 AV receiver (also bought from the Egg with the MLT-2's) After research into a lot of different speakers, from several manufacturers and types, I came back to Martin Logan and their Motion Series of Speakers <no doubt we will be hearing more in the coming year as word gets out. These speaker stand 12" tall, about 5" wide and deep, with a neat curving cabinet <great looking high gloss piano black finish> Installed the M-4's with Monster THX 16ga wire and Belkins banana plugs to the Yamaha V867 receiver as Front Right & Left speakers. Original MLT-2 satellite speakers formerly in front were delegated to the REAR SURROUND R&L speakers.

Cons: NO CON'S. ......even packaging was appropriate with one speaker per box. Mounting accessories included are simplistic plastic bracket, decent looking but one where you would be well advised to hit a stud <ML did provide the auger screw anchors and screws to install the mount, noting this type of auger anchor is the only one which holds well in normal 1/2" drywall> I was initially put off by the speaker connection; however, that 'might be a Con' actually turned into a really great method of Pushing in the (+) or (-) button which is spring loaded, and when the bare speaker wire is inserted or the banana plug/pin plug is inserted, you let off the spring loaded button and have a very SECURE MEANS TO HOLD THE SPEAKER WIRE. Best means for attaching wires to a speaker I've seen in a long time,, Reader can move this to the 'other thoughts' or the Pro ..

Other Thoughts: THESE MOTION-4 SPEAKERS ARE EXCELLENT SPEAKERS IN THEIR OWN RIGHT, PART OF MARTIN LOGAN'S MOTION LINE OF SPEAKERS. Would give them a look. Currently I have a fantastic sounding HT system for under $650 thanks to the EGG's fantastic deals. The MLT-2 system, using the Motion-4 for Front speakers in a 7.1 configuration, from the 95w per channel Yamaha RX-V867 AV receiver product a quality of sound that I would stack up against any small speaker system under $2,000, considering my investment, the whole deal is a satisfying 5-STAR DEAL .
