I can never tell from a picture, but is the screen matte or gloss?  I prefer gloss but specs never say?

LCDs finish are generally mate, unless there is a piece of glass in front of the screen which is rare for a desktop unit.

Mine is mate. This said, the mate finish does not affect at all the clarity of the picture (after all this is 1080 lines, maybe things would be different if it was a 4K, but then so would be the price :-)

does this monitor have speakers?

It does not have speakers. It also does not have an auxiliary audio output, so you can't use it to run audio over HDMI to analog speakers.

quick question would you suggest this for a gaming monitor?
looking to bash about in Star Citizen, Star Wars etc.

I have not tried Star Citizen. It works great in Elite Dangerous and Rocket League! On both of those games I get a nice wide view which gives me a hint of a peripheral view. I found a small issue with menus in Fallout 4 and Xcom2, but nothing really obnoxious. Other than that it looks cool and both games offer wider views of the game world, which was really nice.

Watch out for Ubisoft games. I tried Assassin's Creed Black Flag and I could not get the video to behave. I read online that some Ubisoft games have an issue with ultrawides. Although I had no problems playing The Division beta.

Also, I'm using an Nvidia 970. I don't doubt a 960 or equivalent would run it fine.

how wide is it and can the screen raise up and down?

The screen is 32 inches wide and the base is about 8 inches deep. The top of the screen is about 21 inches from the desk it is standing on, and the screen can tilt back and forth towards or away from you while you're sitting at it, but not sideways, and it cannot slide up or down to adjust the height.
