4 out of 5 eggsBD sounds great

Pros: Setting aside the inherent xenophobia you've got yourself a good retooling of an old SF story.

Sound is stupendous; when the ships call out my whole neighborhood quakes in fear, bwahahaha.

Cons: Just story gripes, see other

Other Thoughts: Two problems not tech related.

1) The film just ends (yes, so does the story, I already know that) as if Spielberg ran out of money (!) or steam.

2) If the aliens need to turn humans into blood milkshakes for an energy source, why are they blasting us apart in the first half of the film?

3 out of 5 eggsEh! A C for effort.

Pros: High budget flik with great special effects.

As cool as the "hover craft" were in the original flik, I like that we remain true to the story here and keep them as tri-pods.

Dakota Fanning is awesome.

Cons: **** SPOILER ALERT ****
Stop reading if you don't want to know details about the movie intended to surprise you.

In every version of this story: in the book, in the radio play, in the original movie, the aliens are from Mars and they come down from the sky in "cylinders".

Here, aliens are not from Mars any more; they are just aliens. And apparently they came here before and buried the machines of war underground while our ancestors were still trying to figure out how to walk erect. And now they're back and riding lightning bolts down to the buried machines.

OK. You're an advanced civilization and you go around plundering planets for resources. You: A) bury war machines and wait for a civilization to pop up because you *LOVE* a good fight or B) PLUNDER THE PLANET NOW, WHERE THERE IS NO RESISTANCE.

OK, I get that Spielberg felt the uncontrollable urge to somehow - I'll be kind - "freshen" the story up a bit. Would it be asking too much that he do it in a plausible way?

Other Thoughts: I wonder if anyone will ever do this as a period piece? The original story takes place in 1800's in London. Everyone who takes on this project upgrades it to here & now. Given the subject material, it really works best in its original setting and period.

Please, take me back to a time when *ALL* aliens were Martians. Let the ending make sense because it's the Martians first attempt at colonization and they didn't know the biology down here would be toxic.

And find a leading man who can act.

Go pick a fight with Xenu, Tom. Maybe you can bore him to death with your highlight reel.
