StarTech 3.5in Black Multi Port Panel for Front Drive Bay with eSATA

  • 35BAYPANELBK
  • Plastic
ICON Loading...

Back when the home computer first came out, all of the ports were in the back, and because there weren't that many things to plug in, that worked fine. But we started plugging in headphones, and putting video to our tvs again, and synchronizing our MP3 players. All that crawling under the desk to reach behind the desk started to get on our nerves.

Many computer cases now have ports in the front, but yours doesn't. Or maybe it doesn't have enough ports in front. Either way, you can install this handy panel into an unused 3.5 inch bay (or a 5.25 inch bay with an optional adapter) and hook up as many ports as your motherboard can support. Speaker and microphone, external SATA drive, Firewire, USB, you're covered.

Your computer is supposed to be an convenience, so make using it more convenient. And this add-in panel could be just the thing, don't you think?

  • newegg Multi-port Front Panel The Startech 35BAYPANELBK adds four USB ports, one IEEE 1394a port, one eSATA port and two audio ports to the front of you computer for easy access.
  • newegg Fits 3.5" Drive Bays The Startech 35BAYPANELBK features great compatibility with any computer chassis with a standard 3.5” drive bay.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: Had what I was looking for

Cons: HD audio ports did not work. The main thing I purchased it for was a complete failure. I think it was assembled on a Friday at 4:59 PM.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this specifically for the front HD audio ports. the USB and eSATA was a bonus. Upon installing I connected my headphones and got nothing, no sound, no detection of device connected. when i pulled the connector halfway out it registered a device and gave 1 channel sound. I opened up my case to check the connectors and upon disconnecting the audio connection from the panel all the wires for the audio hookup fell out as if they were never crimped in. The unit was cheap enough that an RMA is not worth my time. I may still find a use in one of my other computers for the usb connectors.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks but poor assembly quality

Pros: Supplies 4 front USB ports and audio. I don't have 1394 but I hooked up eSATA in case I ever use it in the future.

Cons: Was not tested at the factory, one USB header had a short between the two data pins. I scraped it off with a small screwdriver and now the port works. One USB housing had a missing pin retainer.

Other Thoughts: Expensive for what you get, seeing you can buy a Rosewill case for just $7 more.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I've only made use of the USB ports. They work as expected.

Cons: Sensitive to static electricity. Two times my computer rebooted while plugging a flash drive into a usb port. If I touch the case as I am inserting the drive, no problems occur.

Other Thoughts: Very convenient for plugging in multiple drives.

2 out of 5 eggsnot so good

Pros: usb works

Cons: headphone port did not work. e-mailed support. they e-mailed me back asking questions such as does the mic port work? did you try using the other plug? i suppose they think im an idiot. i fixed it myself. looks as though they solder boards with blow torches.

Other Thoughts: first bad product i bought from them.

1 out of 5 eggsNo Audio

Pros: USB's Work

Cons: Front Audio does not work. When nothing is plugged in it says that there is a microphone plugged in, then if you plug in headphones it clears and says nothing is plugged in. This has happened twice with $24.99 to RMA its not worth the headaches.

2 out of 5 eggsIt's ok but not compatible

Pros: It puts an eSATA, 4 USB, Firewire and audio ports right at the front of your computer.

Cons: It's not compatible with Azalia. It is plastic, which isn't a big deal, it's good plastic. The audio ports didn't work for me which was pretty much the only reason I wanted this, everything else was extra. After a week of diagnostics and research I finally found a review here saying that it isn't Azalia compatible.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you check your bios for an Azalia device if you have one don't buy this. I found this which is cheaper and aluminum but lacks an eSATA port (not a big deal): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813999356
But the shipping is via DHL (ugh!), they can't figure out their left from their right and the go through USPS. My return went from NYC to CA via standard USPS in 2 days and I am still waiting for my item to arrive from NJ, I could have picked it up myself.

1 out of 5 eggsMinus 5 star rating

Pros: USB jacks work

Cons: After installing and fighting with new drivers and new bios in an attempt to get the HD Audio to function I discovered sloppy soldering bridges on the circuitry of the headphone jack of this device. The result is my motherboard is now permantly damaged and will not autosense any device using the HD Audio header.

Other Thoughts: If you buy one of these be sure to unscrew the circuit card and inspect for solder bridges like the manufacturer should have done.

4 out of 5 eggsSpotty USB connection

Pros: Fills in the obsolete floppy drive bay with something useful. Adds funtionality to my 10yr old old case with no front USB. Firewire and audio ports as well. Wires are long, long enough for full tower cases.

Cons: I bought two of these and it seems like the USB will just lose connection while your transferring a large file (1GB+) to your external desktop HDD. USB flash drives seem to work just fine, but the files I send to them are much smaller. -1 egg for that

Other Thoughts: Haven't used the audio too much either. Was having problems with Windows detecting the headphones/silencing the speakers but that may be software related issue with the sound card.

2 out of 5 eggsGood but not great

Pros: Has plenty of USB connections and the Sata and Firewire is nice. Fits in a 3.5in bay which is nice. I would have given the product more eggs if I didn't have so many cons.

Cons: The plastic is SUPER flimsy and cheap. I was actually quite surprised when I got it. The price for this thing should be less then what it's offered for.

Some of the USB connections where dented and required a flathead to fix the connections so the USB plugs could properly connect.

NOTE: The HD Audio is NOT (Azalia) compatible. It's an Intel-HD Compatible Cable which is not compatible with Creative X-FI cards. I tried getting this thing to work only to find out that the Intel-HD Compatible is not sufficient enough to work with my Creative X-FI Fata1ity Titanium PC-Express card.

Very little documentation actually comes with the product. It would be nice if they gave you at least a schematic or pin pattern for some of their cables including HD Audio and AC97. That way maybe I could have possibly fixed it myself. Lastly you can't detach the firewire if you don't want to use it. It's bundled with the Audio circuit so removing that portion if it would disable the audio conn

Other Thoughts: Would I have known that the Audio cable is not Intel (Azalia) standard I wouldn't have bought this. There are plenty of other front adapters that are a bit cheaper and have support.

5 out of 5 eggsFills empty floppy bay

Pros: Works well. Heavy plastic and solid components. Sound, USB, and esata, what more do you need?

Cons: Comes in black only. Most of these will be used to update older cases, which are mostly what color???????BEIGE!!!!

Other Thoughts: You can get cheaper USB panels to go in a 3.5 drive bay, but you get what you pay for. These are solid and should hold up to normal use. Some reviewers are saying they are cheap plastic, they are plastic, yes, but they are solid and well made of good quality thick material. They even look heavy-duty mounted. And the assortment of ports is perfect. They could have probably left out the 1394 port, I have never used one ever, but it doesn't hurt to have it for those who need it. The ESATA port is a nice touch. If you need a front panel get this one. Highly recommended.
