3 out of 5 eggsAmending my previous review

Pros: still many good features but not reliable (see cons)

Cons: It seems to have intermittant problems. Sometimes when I click "Computer" to see my hard drives the converted IDE isn't there. Initially was present but then later was not, like it dropped out. Then after a reboot the drive is once again detected. So it has flaws but at least it allowed me to move my data to a new SATA drive so it wasn't a total waste of money.

5 out of 5 eggsworked perfect, no hassles

Pros: Upright design doesn't protrude. Comes with a power cable splitter, one leg to HDD other to this card. Absolute plug and play for me. One IDE drive was already set to cable select. Don't even know what the other drive is set for. Took a chance and both drives were recognized first time. Very pleased.

Cons: Even though the card sits upright the SATA jack points outward so plug and cable combination protrudes 1 3/8 inches from card surface. As such my cover barely goes on without hitting it. But barely is good enough. (Maybe there are other cable designs with shorter profile plugs)

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised, if you can set it up.

Pros: It gets the job done once configured properly. If there is any kind of performance penalty from having this device installed (apart from, ya know, using a hard drive that is bottlenecked by the IDE interface), I haven't noticed.

Cons: No instructions. Not even a hint as to where to begin setting it up. But I can only think to take one egg away for that, since it has proven itself very reliable.

Other Thoughts: My primary hard drive that I was using in an older configuration was an IDE drive, but since it was still fairly new (and a fairly large hard drive at that) I didn't want to just stop using it, so I took a chance on one of these adapters.

It was lots of playing with jumper settings before I found one that just worked. Interestingly enough, my system (and the motherboard itself) detects the hard drive as an IDE drive, anyway, despite being connected via the SATA interface. Its simply an add-on IDE controller over SATA.

Its been over a year now, and the adapter hasn't given me any trouble. I'd recommend this device to just about anyone that wanted to squeeze some more life out of their old IDE devices if they're still worth keeping around.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks ok

Pros: Works as advertised in that in enables you to use your old ide drive on a newer mobo with sata only.

Cons: No instructions!!!

Other Thoughts: Put jumpers on drive on master, place another jumper (not included in box!) on 2 pins closest to sata port, will work then.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: None, because it didn't even work

Cons: Fried before I even opened it, but it would cost more to RMA it than it did to purchase it

Other Thoughts: This is just garbage. I had mistakenly ordered an IDE DVD drive for my new computer, and needed a converter. This never worked out of the box. We had to take the SATA cable out of an old external drive to confirm that it wasn't the burner that was DOA. I'm sure my friend will make good use out of the burner I couldn't even put in my computer. So glad I ordered a blu-ray burner as back up, or I wouldn't have been able to use my computer. Sabrent makes cheap garbage, avoid at all costs. I would RMA this, but it would cost more to return it than it's worth.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't work at all

Pros: Non

Cons: They didn't work for me. I bought two of them to salvage a DVD drive and a hard drive neither is recognized by the new mother board. Save your money don't purchase these.

2 out of 5 eggsIf it worked, it'd be cool

Pros: small

Cons: poorly made

Other Thoughts: Can't really say I used it. I bought two of these so I could reuse an old IDE Hard Drive and DVD Burner. They both worked for two boots, then they died. Very lame. Steer clear of these. If you need to convert, go get an external IDE to USB case and use that, not these internal boards.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks with Windows XP and not Windows 7 x64

Pros: This device does work when you use it on a system running Windows XP, although some jumper settings may need to be changed on the IDE HDD.

Cons: Where to start? First, this device does not come with an instruction manual which is a problem considering that jumper settings may need to be altered. I found that by setting the IDE HDD to "cable select" a machine running Windows XP was able to recognize and read/write from the drive. However, I would have preferred not to discover this after 20 minutes of trial and error. Second, this device does not seem to work with Windows 7 x64. No matter what combination of device/HDD jumpers I chose, Windows 7 always froze during start with this device installed. I encountered this problem even when I installed Windows 7 on the machine that worked with this device when it was running XP. Third, customer support from Sabrent is a bit lacking. Although they are nice, they are not very knowledgeable. The tech I spoke to had no clue what the jumper settings on the device were for and advised me to try different configurations using trial and error to see if I could get it to work.

Other Thoughts: I gave this device two stars because it did work on a system running XP; however, I bought this device for a system running Windows 7 x64. Clearly there is a driver/compatibility issue that must be addressed, but is beyond the technical capabilities of Sabrent.

2 out of 5 eggsLet the buyer beware

Pros: It finally did allow me to use my old IDE DVD burner on a new motherboard with only SATA capability.

Cons: It did not come with documentation. It took a day of experimenting to find which settings on the drive and which power settings in the computer need to be set before this thing would actually work. That same day was also spent in identifying all the different SATA configurations this board is capable of and narrowing it down to one that would work.

Other Thoughts: DO NOT PURCHASE unless your technical understanding rates 5 or higher on Newegg's scale. If your technical knowledge isn't that high, consider replacing the drive in question.
