2 out of 5 eggsUSB Works Great, SATA Disconnect

Pros: Compact and is mountable as a 2.5" hard drive (has holes in it for screws)
USB function is a nice plus for flashing embedded distros

Cons: SATA is unreliable
USB causes BIOS to hang on my ECS board

Other Thoughts: Bought this for a PFSense router. Plugged it in as a SATA device so that I wouldn't need to worry about USB issues. Worked fine for a week. Then, the OS for the router would crash. Would reboot and the drive wouldn't show up. No bootable media. Reboot several times and it would finally recognize. Switched to USB and didn't have a problem with disconnects, but now it causes hangs on ever single boot for my motherboard. Frustrating to say the least. I recommend trying a different brand as this one is made a bit plasticy.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

Perhaps since the OS for the router crashed, you might have needed to reinstall the OS again.

Also, the boot hanging looks like a boot priority issue.

Please contact customer's support about the issue, perhaps there is a solution to troubleshoot the problem.

1 out of 5 eggsGood Idea, but very broken

Pros: SATA or USB operation, seems to boot newer media/CF

Cons: Does *NOT* work with most media. So far, does not work with Lexar 32M, 128M SanDisk 16M, Viking 256M, BSA 128M, SimpleTech 64M,256M,512M,1G.

I get massive read errors (unrecovered read error). I can put these in a SanDisk CF reader, and they are just fine.

Other Thoughts: Oooh! It does work with a 256M and 8G transcend.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear customer,

Please call our technical support team; we might be able to help you to get our adapter to read your media. It should work with all standard CF's no matter the brands. Our technical support team will work with you to find out why it is not reading your media.

5 out of 5 eggsSATA/USB = troubleshooting weapon.

Pros: SATA plus USB means you can use USB to load Linux and WinPE by USB using a fast PC, then boot a CF card in this adapter in a PC you wish to troubleshoot.

Booting as a "hard disk" is much faster and more reliable than USB boot, but since this device does BOTH it rocks!

I loaded FalconFour's 4.5 multiboot CD to my CF card since it gives the choice of PE, Linux, DOS, and many other tools. I have both the SATA and notebook PATA versions of the Syba adapter and recommend them highly.

Cons: None for the SATA version!

Clip the "extra" pin on the PATA version and it's fine too.

Other Thoughts: The CF card matters more than the adapter in terms of booting. All CF cards are not created equal.

The card I get 100-percent good boots from in both SATA and PATA adapters on new and old PCs is a cheap Wintec 8GB from Newegg.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks seamlessly

Pros: First off I don't have a high opinion of Syba products. They may be inexpensive but they are also usually cheap and flimsy so I had reservations on getting it but this one is certainly an exception.
It's study, I used it as a SATA adapter and it's totally seamless as described and works great.

Cons: it is plastic, but not like a CF card is going to get really hot so no eggs lost.

5 out of 5 eggsI Changed My Mind!

Pros: Very fast USB transfer rates. I have no clue how.

Cons: Plastic?

Other Thoughts: Alright. At first I left the N/A review below while attaching this little guy via SATA/eSATA and powerd on. Well that really sucked for some reason. Maybe it's my RAID drivers or something but, I'm giving this 5 eggs to counter the low review before after hooking it up via USB.

I would love to try using this with a really fast card but I'm not going to buy one.

SMOKING FAST SPEEDS VIA USB!!!

I transferred 10GB at a consistent 40 mb/s and this thing still holds strong. It might be something to do with the SATA to USB converter inside it but I don't care. It's great. Works much faster than my other USB card readers.

Very happy now that I gave it another shot. Now 100 mb/s speeds on a crazy CF card, I'm not sure about, but using this as a usb card reader is much faster than anything else I've used.

2 out of 5 eggsEhhh... Works sort of.

Pros: Low cost, works for copying files. No errors.

Cons: SLOW. A little cheap. Plastic ( would have paid $5 for aluminum ), doesn't transfer fast enough. Now I know these devices all need to be compatible with each other to achieve full speed.

I get 40+ mb/s from Express Card PCIe (sata) but only get 10 mb/s on this card interface adapter with the same card to the same hard drive.

Other Thoughts: Could be my configuration some how but too low of read speeds. Card works fine at 40 mb/s normally.

USB is faster.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: Works as expected using a Patriot x266 4gb card with UDMA5 supported. it is 4.1 spec CF1
I got 35,38mb/s read on the CF using HDTune and .5ms random seek

I will definately consider this for an 8gb X600 CF card!

Cons: This does not include a Sata cable

Other Thoughts: Built for a Mini-ITX Embedded system with an Atom D330 board.

5 out of 5 eggsGets the job done

Pros: Simple, lightweight form factor. USB connection (mini, not micro for those curious) is a definite bonus. LED indicators are a plus. CF card fits nicely and securely; does not require excessive force to insert or remove. Mounting holes have matched up with any mounting brackets I've tried.

Cons: None that I have encountered so far.

Other Thoughts: Have purchased a few of these for simple firewall installs, all of them seem great. I have yet to run into the flimsy SATA connector trouble others seem to have; all the ones I have received have been very solid. Maybe they've changed the design.

5 out of 5 eggsexcellent device

Pros: This adapter has exceeded all expectations. Very good and sturdy construction, with mounting holes in proper places, and correct size. the hard plastic casing gives me confidence in the durability of the adapter. The usb connector integrated on the adapter is extremely useful, allowing for easy debugging and mounting of a compact flash drive.

Cons: only that Compact flash is about as slow as a regular hard drive, though I have no doubt that this adapter could give you the speed from a faster flash card.

Other Thoughts: Purchased for use in a front hard drive bay in an industrial computer.
