i have the HEC XP01080 800 Watt PSU.

i only have the main PCI-E 6 Pin and 8(6+2) Pin i do not have the second 6 and 6+2 modular cables.

my question is if i use 2 of these Splitters one on the 6 pin and one on the 6+2 pin will i be able to fully power 2 HD 6870's?

According to the power consumption of your cards that I found online it should work fine. I have two of these splitters for my 2, GeForce 560Ti and I have ran them at max load and they still worked fine. The power consumption chart I saw online showed that your card takes less power than mine as well. I have read online that some people do not like to split the power like that, so if you are worried about electrical issues I would just keep an eye on how warm the splitter cables get. If they stay cool, then I can't forsee you having any issues.

Im not sure to tell you the truth but I have never had a issue with it works fine. The wires are thick not at all thin.

Question 3

I just bought a gtx 1060.  My old gpu took two 6 pin pcie cable  to power the card.  The 1060 take one 8 pin pcie power cable.  would this work to power my card.  My PSU is modular so I can plug this right in the psu and into the card correct?

this cord seems expensive first thought, second it should in theory, 3rd, double check your psu to see if it has a 8 pin cable as most do that were made in the last 5 years. Also to be 100% call the psu mfg and ask - Would hate to tell you yes and you be delayed uptime because of it.  Hope this helps!

Question 4

have an 8 pin connector from my PS, need a 6 pin for a GPU, so need an 8 pin female (to connect to PS cable) to 6 pin male (to plug into GPU).  Is this connector the right gender for that?

As Brian has mentioned, it's a 6 pin female but IIRC, the only difference between 6 and 8 pin connectors is just an extra pair of grounds. The 6-pin female connector should be able to fit onto the 8-pin PSU connector (two possible alignments, or four if you flip the connectors, only one should fit). Since your GPU only takes 6-pin connectors, I don't see any danger of ignoring the extra grounds.

Is the compatible with a GTX 980?

The GTX 980 requires an 8 pin and 6 pin. The Athena split will meet the requirement since it has two 2 pin and two 6 pin.
