5 out of 5 eggsLike a charm

Pros: Works as advertised. When I virtualized a Windows Server 2003 instance into ESXi, I lost the ability to use the PCI fax modem. Add this with a ~$30 serial fax modem, also from NewEgg, and I'm back in business.

Cons: This device doesn't make me biscuits every morning.

Other Thoughts: I had to reboot the server after installing the virtual COM port drivers. Mildly annoying, since I WANT TO PLAY WITH THE NEW TOY NOW, but that evening after the reboot, everything ran just fine.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Product

Pros: This product works extremely well with Windows XP and 2003. I've tested it pretty thoroughly, and it just works... flawlessly. However, it doesn't work properly in Windows Vista/7/2008 because the drivers are unsigned (see cons). This is why it get 3 eggs from me, rather than 5.

Cons: As mentioned, the drivers are unsigned. Windows Vista/7/2008 require drivers to be signed, or you must boot using the option to not require signed drivers. This is not an option with a remote reboot, unless you have something like a DRAC on a Dell server. I've spoken with Startech support, and the first response I got was that it was a 64-bit problem. Having tested this device on both 32 and 64 bit versions of the newer Windows OS's, I corrected this response, and was then told that the device must be in Raw mode to work in these OS's. This also doesn't work, because Windows still will not load the unsigned drivers and add the COM port. I was then told they had no signed drivers, and no time line to get signed drivers. Windows Vista was released on 30 Jan 2007, which means they've had more than 3 years to come up with a signed driver, and have failed to do so. It should be a very simple procedure.

Other Thoughts: If Startech can get a signed driver for the newer Windows OS's, this product would absolutely rock. If your environment only has XP/2003 and you have no immediate plans to migrate to 7/2008, then this product will work flawlessly for you. If you have a 7/2008 environment, or soon will, then your search is not over for a serial-to-ethernet adapter, because this one won't work. It's very disappointing that it won't work in the newer Windows OS's, because it is a great product aside from the obvious driver problem. I'm glad I only bought one single serial version for testing.

As far as Linux support, I have no idea how well it works. I've not had a chance to test this device in Linux.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks but critical problem

Pros: Has many features and browser interface. Everything is great except my one problem and it is a very critical problem for me (see below)

Cons: The driver has problems. If you use this device in driver mode it will blue screen. The company gives instructions for solving this but it doesn't work. They tell you that verifying the driver will solve this problem but it doesn't. I tried this on many different computers with WindowsXP sp2 and sp3 and they all Blue screened or just shut off. I even tried vista and it doesn't blue screen... it just won't communicate.

Other Thoughts: This thing works fine if you don't use it in driver mode but I really need to use it in driver mode. I am going to contact the company and try a few more things. I believe I can get this working I just need to get the driver to work. I am going to try Windows 2000.

5 out of 5 eggsDoes what it claims to do!

Pros: It works! One-page manual, easy set up, no weirdness -- what a cool invention!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: Having struggled with serial configuration in the past, I expected a nightmare of null modem cables and stop bit settings. Not at all! Plug the serial cable in one end, LAN cable in the other, load the software, set the baud rate, and voila: the PC talks to COMnn (pick any unused port number) just like a local serial device, but the device (an HVAC controller, in my case) is on the other side of the building!

5 out of 5 eggsPhone System Application

Pros: This device is very easy to configure and works perfect. I used the NETRS232_1 to connect a Comdial FX-II phone system to the Internet for remote programming purposes. The virtual comm port installed by the provided software works flawlessly in VMMI (Comdial's programming software)

Cons: The only small con I have with this product is StarTech only supports Windows x86 and no other operating system. A slight bummer for Mac/Linux users :(
