5 out of 5 eggsContinues to be a life-saver

Pros: My older review is the one signed Richard E to the top right. I just used up my last one of these, and I will be soon buying another just as a spare. As I learn more about disk drives, and testing software, like spinrite, and hdsentinel, i am also learning more about SMART values. You can get SMART info from speedfan, in hex, or from HDTune in decimal - which I prefer. I noticed a C7 value, CRC errors, which I read about in wikipedia in the SMART article - and those are cable errors. I just did a bunch of spinrite testing, and my CRC values were increasing on my test computer secondary ide channel - and I thought it was a good 80 pin flat cable. I put on my last round cable - the one I am reviewing - and the problems disappeared.

Cons: Yes, the collars can be somewhat heavy, and you might want to cut them off. Lately I am not doing that, and they seem fine. One drive that kept disconnecting - I would boot up and it wasn't there - and I had blamed it on the heavy collar- that seemed to be a problem with that particular disk - the problem continued even with a change back to the flat ribbon, and finally I put a different disk in its place and no more disconnecting.

Other Thoughts: I only just recently learned about C7 CRC errors. You won't even see this in the HDTune health tab, unless you have one of the older WD ide drives - I own 15 ide 3.5" drives among various older towers, and a bunch of sata drives on two newer gaming towers. I have started doing spinrite testing on all my drives - I decided it's a once-a-year thing, to keep the drives refreshed. I also bought wd sentinel, and in discussion with the author, I am impressed by his approach, but I haven't evaluated it well enough. I do know, that you can't leave drives sitting on a shelf for years, and expect them to function - run them at least once a year, if not twice - a good run of several hours. Spinrite seems great for that.

3 out of 5 eggsIt works.

Pros: Well, it works.

Cons: I needed a longer slave connector and by the part number thought this was long enough. Not. Had to shift my drives around and this cable being stiffer made it a struggle.

Other Thoughts: The collars are useless and make it look half-arsed. Well, that's why we have spare parts. Where else can you have this much fun for 8 bucks.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than original

Pros: Very nicely made and work quite well. This will be the third I have bought.

I bought the first one - just in case - almost two years ago, and then 6 months later had a flat ide cable go bad, which I thought would never happen. I had an intermittent hard drive failure - with the drive standing on its head, it worked fine, but lying flat it wouldn't. I assumed it was the drive and re-formatted, etc. I later discovered it was the ide cable all along, because when I finally switched in this product, my drive problems totally disappeared.

Last month, the new spare round cable went into a different computer, and again solved a rather strange drive problem that I couldn't get rid of, on a 7 year old machine.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I will certainly never be without one of these in my spare parts kit.

I've been using PCs since before windows. I never thought I'd see the day when a flat cable would go bad, but with two bad in the last two years, and about 6 more flat cables spread among various computers, that's the first thing I'll suspect from now on. (I thought I was an idiot for reformatting my hard drive, and going through a full re-install of all my software, but the main tech guy on my gaming forum confessed he had the same problem, did the same thing - formatted his hard drive - and it was his ide cable all along, lol.)

Of course on next year's gaming monster new build, I'll use one of these round ide cables for the optical and 1 ide drive, and everything else will be sata.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well

Pros: Does what it is supposed to, when plugged in correctly

Cons: The plastic on the cable listing which end goes to the motherboard, master and slave drives can be annoying, but doesn't take away from the performance of the cable. And the rubber moving could bother some people, but for me it provided flexibility

Other Thoughts: I mistakenly tried plugging in the end that goes to the motherboard upside down at first and my drives were not being recognized. One I figured that out, this cable worked perfectly.

4 out of 5 eggsWell it's just an IDE Cable

Pros: Well its a good IDE cable for those of us that still use them.
it works. As far as i can tell it will last for a while .. just the feeling of good cable and such.

Cons: The rubber parts that are near the connectors are very loose and i would have liked if they actually covered the cables.
quick fix (use zip ties around them to hold it in place)

Other Thoughts: well you get what you pay for , and not paying much , ... well was worth it.

Newegg is awesome.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks alright

Pros: Bought this cable for my modded Xbox (not 360) to decrease load times of the games. Of course it is spec'd to operate at a higher speed (ATA/100) than the regular ATA/66 (66MB vs 100MB burst) and *does* decrease the load times.

Cons: I had to cut off the ends that cover the connectors and some of the rubber tubing around the cable to make it fit; this shouldn't be a problem in any computer -- not even a SFF.

Before I got this cable, I thought the rubber tubing and ends were bonded to the cable, but that's not the case -- it moves around the wiring inside.

The "metallic" shielding material looks and feels cheap.

Other Thoughts: Not sure how many people are still modding regular Xboxes, but stick to the flat cables that are 24" at least.
