5 out of 5 eggsSaved me money...

Pros: I have an old external hard drive that I want to keep using, because it has some special features (it connects with FireWire, serves as a USB hub, and fits precisely below my Mac mini). Its 3.5-inch IDE hard drive failed. Replacing the whole external drive with the newer SATA-based version would be costly. Replacing an IDE hard drive is also not cost-effecting these days. This affordable product is the solution.

I used a spare 2.5-inch (laptop-sized) SATA hard drive connected to this adapter. I also had a metal adapter bracket that came with an SSD, which secured the 2.5-inch drive plus adapter in the space used by a 3.5-inch drive, with room to spare.

Although not shown in the online product image, it comes with a power cable (already attached to adapter) that plugs into the common 4-pin "Molex" power connector used by 3.5-inch IDE drives. It is "pass-through," allowing another power connection, if needed.

The external drive sees it as an IDE hard drive. It's seamless. Because I used a 2.5-inch drive, it now runs much cooler (the whiny fan does not come on), with less noise from the hard drive.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat!

Pros: I have used these twice now to replace failing HDDs in older computers that simply couldn't be cheaply be replaced. At first I tried the only IDE HDD that Newegg still sells brand-new but it failed inside of six months. I decided to try one of these and a WD Caviar Black drive and now I know that this is the solution I should have chosen in the first place. A life saver.

Cons: None.

4 out of 5 eggsThiis one works

Pros: 1. Passes all SMART data to smartmontools: ID, Data and error/self-test logs

2. Works with mixed two HDDs attached to same IDE channel ribbon cable, UDMA 5 92.1/81.8 burst/average

3. Reaches UDMA 5 92.7/84.7 burst/average transfer rate on Intel D915GAV IDE channel (single drive)

4. Molex power is pass-thru (M/F) plus LP4 floppy connector

Cons: 1. Drops to UDMA 2, 32.6/30.4 MB/s burst/average transfer rates on Tyan MPX S2466N-4M server motherboard

2. Bare IDE header pins, no keyed shroud

Other Thoughts: Passes critical tests -- passes SMART data to smartmontools; works with mixed drives on single IDE ribbon cable; UDMA5 transfer speeds; supplied cables are M/F passthrough. Like all other CCBAs in this category, device characteristics cause Tyan MPX S2466N-4M server motherboard to only recognize it as UDMA 2 (33 MB/s), so fails strict PATA HDD compatibility test. Bare IDE header pins need a keyed shroud.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks in TiVo Too

Pros: I've been using these in TiVo Series 2 DVRs to convert them from PATA to newer, larger SATA drives. They seem to work well.

Cons: No problems.

Other Thoughts: One of them seemed a bit loose when plugged into a SATA drive but it may have been the drive itself contributing. No problems resulted despite my initial concern.

1 out of 5 eggsNot for Blu ray use

Pros: This Startech was immediately recognized in BIOS and in Vista Ultimate.

Cons: When I loaded a Blu ray movie, it simply did not play! I then tried it with a regular DVD and even that did not play!

Other Thoughts: I bought this Startech adapter to replace a Sabrent that frequently crashes. At least the Sabrent plays for a while before you have to restart the PC to keep watching the Blu ray movie.

5 out of 5 eggsworks out of the box

Pros: Ready to use. The jumper comes set to slave. It feels very well constructed, very solid.

Cons: This is more of a warning. When the adapter is connected to the SATA port of the HD, it kinds of shortens the lentgh og the IDE cable when connecting 2 HDs. Measure it firts, so you don't have to disassemble.

Other Thoughts: I set my SATA HD cluster size to 32K (for video editing) and runs like a champ even though it's connected to this adapter. I know I don't have one of the new motherboards with SATA ports. But I'm waiting!
