Will this transfer the OS as well? As in when I am transferring from a HDD to a new SSD?

No, it is intended for two running systems that already have their own OS, to transfer documents, photos, music, mail, etc. There would be a real issue with Microsoft with the OS licensing otherwise. Plus it is very likely that the device drivers for all the hardware components are different anyway.

Does this work between lap top to android?

I don't know.  There are some questions you should ask the manufacturer.  This is probably one of them.  The reason is, that people want to be helpful and answer but really don't know the answer, and won't tell you they don't really know.  Would you believe what a used car salesman tells you?

(And - I don't have an Android).

I would guess at it and say, "If both devices have USB ports it should work".

But then I think, can you install any data at all onto your Android using the Android's USB Port"?  And, "Maybe the Windows and Android operating systems can't communicate"?   Then I think, "Can you install a Windows program onto your Android" through the USB Port"?

My answer would be, "This is likely not to work because the IOGEAR device has a software program that is built into the device designed to work with Windows.    But - if Android uses the FAT32 or the NTFS formatting on its hard drive, it might work.

But I'm guessing.

This is more reliable - if there is no mention of this device on Android forums it probably will not work, because certainly someone will have tried it before, and posted that.  If it is discussed on the forums it might very well work.  That's the best answer -

Question 4

The two computers I want to transfer files between are on separate networks. With this cable, is it possible to access the network that the other computer is on?

No, you probably want to turn off the networks on both machines during this transfer operation. It is intended for the two machines to be side by side, because this is a physical cable that connects the two together. If you are going across a network, you can try Microsoft's Transfer Wizard. However, it would be terribly slow, and I have never been very successful with their tool, which is why I bought this device.

I used it to transfer files from a Windows XP desktop to a Windows 8 laptop.  It worked great and saved a lot of time transferring a lot of data.

Does this work with Linux?

It certainly appears this can be made to work with ubuntu with minor fiddling.  openSUSE is supposed to have an installation pattern for tablets than *might* work.  Start looking at xda-developers forum thread# 2500078

To safely do this without compromise of the onboard 64 or 32 GB, I'd recommend an external disk installation booting off of the keyboard dock's USB 3.0 connector.  A little SSD running from there oughta be about as fast as the onboard storage.

Yes. I used it to transfer data from an XP computer to a windows 8 computer and it worked just fine

I'm not positive. I have a PC. But the instructions say it's compatible with MAC OSX 10.4 and higher. So I'd assume yes...
