1 out of 5 eggsDon't bother

Pros: It sort of works under specific circumstances.

Cons: Will not work if you have another drive attached to the same cable, regardless of how the other drive is jumpered.

Adapter has no jumper settings to select for master, slave or cable select. Only an odd ball SATA-IDE or IDE-SATA jumper, suggesting the adapter is bi-directional, which in itself makes no sense since the physical ports on the adapter only allow it to function in one direction.

Complete waste of 10 bucks, and not worth bothering to send back for a refund.

1 out of 5 eggsIDE SATA bidirectional adapter

Pros: - Good approach for attaching to a SATA drive (
- Adhesive sponge to retain to the SATA drive
- IDE <-> SATA bi-directional
- Jumper to select IDE->DATA or SATA->IDE operation

Cons: - Does not appear to work with ASUS DVD-Writer drive DRW-24F1ST. I tried two different adapters (1 from newegg, 1 from local shop) and both boards resulted in I/O errors after ~15-30 sec. (DVD drive works fine with normal SATA connection or with a PCI adapter card).

- I/O data errors with Windows XP, no matter which service pack is installed (SP1a/SP2/SP3). This occured with multiplr HDDs and CD/DVD drives.

- No jumper for master/slave selection when attaching to IDE cable. Not a problem if a single drive, could cause problems if multiple drives on a single IDE cable

- Cheaply built

- Arrived broken from Newegg

Other Thoughts: I simply could not get this adapter board to work. I even purchased an adapter from a local shop to make sure, and the results above (the CON's) occurred with both adapters. This adapter simply does not want to keep up with WinXP + ASUS DRW-24F1ST DVD Drive.

I eventually had to use a PCI adapter (Syba SD-VIA-1A2S) to meet my needs.

Finally, I have to knock a egg due to Newegg itself. The original board arrived with bent IDE pins, a crack on the SATA power connecter and it appears that the adhesive had been previously used. It is almost like someone else tried to use this, returned it to Newegg broken and then Newegg simply re-shipped without checking the condition...

I purchased a second board due to this, but both boards exhibits the I/O errors described above. I wish I could recommend the board - it is a clever design - but I cannot.

2 out of 5 eggsNot really what is promised, tho it might work good under certain circumstances.

Pros: If working, seems to be easy to use (thou I have no proof of such; Keep on reading below).

Cons: Considering what is promised, it doesn't work that way. It might depend on what you're using it for. Installing a 2TB hard drive on a XP system is certainly not possible, unless maybe you're running on SP3 and not SP2 as I do. The merchandise's advertisement and specs don't distinguish size of drives nor XP version used, making it appear an all around solution which it is (unfortunately) not.

Other Thoughts: Unless I got a lemon, this converter promises more than it can deliver so you should think twice before buying. The low price compared to SATA host PCI's made me make a mistake that'll cost me more at the end.

1 out of 5 eggsWon't work for me

Pros: At least it was not expensive.

Cons: Could not get this adapter to work with my 2005 Asus K8V-MV mobo and a Lite-on or Sony DVD-RW.

However, the Rosewill RC-A-SATA-IDE SATA to IDE Adapter works just fine ... even has M,S,C jumpers. It does write data a bit slower with the IDE interface.

Other Thoughts: My hobby is refurbishing discarded computers ... the old optical drives rarely working correctly ... there are no "new for sale" ide inteface optical drives ... so this type of adapter (and the added expense) is a necessity. I will be using the Rosewill product in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good

Pros: This items works well. Gave a new lease of life to an older (IDE only) Sony desktop by allowing a newer SATA solid state drive in place of the older, slower PATA drive.

Cons: none for the price

5 out of 5 eggsWorked Great!

Pros: I had a tough time finding an IDE DVD RW for my Dell2400 P4. I married the Kingwin SATA-to-IDE adaptor to a new ASUS DRW-24B1ST (SATA DVD RW) plugged it in and it worked great. This setup cost me less than buying an new hard-to-find IDE DVD RW. I love it when tech works as advertised.

Cons: None
