4 out of 5 eggsPretty cool

Pros: Cool device for the techie! Easy way to get at loose drives without having to find something to physically install then in.

Cons: Only downside I found was it doesn't do well with old (I mean *really* old) IDE drives. Was going through old drives removing useful stuff and erasing them (for disposal), could just cycle drives through the adapter until I got to the really old pile (15-30 yrs old). Had to put them in an old PC to clean them up. Anything 200MB (Mega) or larger should work.

Other Thoughts: Went through about 20 drives, except for the really old IDEs went fine. Sometimes have to hunt for where Windows hides the disk (Disk Management) and assign a drive, but that's a generic USB 'feature'.

1 out of 5 eggsWould not read HDDs properly

Pros: The card readers still work well. Many available formats. Nice power toggle for ease of powering up and down.

Cons: The HDD reader (SATA) will connect and format in its own format, but nothing else reads the data. All other systems sees two partitions instead of one. All other working drives, when connected to it will not properly read. I may have trashed a perfectly good drive thinking it was bad.

Other Thoughts: I never knew this device was bad until I formatted an HDD with it, found nothing else read it. I did the inverse, tried reading other HDDs with it, but the device would always fail. It would be great if you are trying to hide things, but I would have to assume it is corrupting data.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,
We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. We do provide a one year warranty from the date of purchase on your product, so feel free to get that exchanged for a brand new unit.

Best Regards, Vantec

5 out of 5 eggsLove it

Pros: Does exactly what it's supposed to.
Light, even the power adapter isn't bulky.
Not too expensive.
Works both as a power adapter and as a data adapter.
Has a switch on the cord to turn on the power without a surge.
The power split on the usb has a usb port extension, in case you're short on slots, it doesn't really take up more than one slot.

Cons: The SATA cords make for extra pieces that could get lost. The power one I can understand, since it fits onto a different power adapter, but the data one should just be made a part of the device.
Doesn't seem to support USB boot.
I can always use longer cords.

Other Thoughts: I was wary when I purchased this because of the reviews that talked about power problems frying drives. I had no such problem; I'm guessing that people weren't careful about using the switch on the cord. I did have an issue when I restarted a machine without unmounting and removing the drive attached to this device. The drive wouldn't mount again, even attached normally. I kick myself for my carelessness, and don't blame the device.

Other reviews mentioned soft plastic. There is one of those plastic film stickers on it like the ones on the glass of a new mobile phone. I just left the film in place.

4 out of 5 eggsUSB 1.1 issues

Pros: Quality construction, works very good.

Cons: Issues with Lenovo BIOS treating it as USB 1.1.

Other Thoughts: I have had two models, Lenovo 3000 C200 and Lenovo Thinkpad R61i treat this as USB 1.1 on startup in the BIOS. Otherwise works, but slow when deploying an image to these machines.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Useful

Pros: If you're a PC tech, fix your family's computer problems, or have a lot of old drives and such laying around, this is a very handy device to have.

Worked on Windows 7 (64bit), Vista (32bit), and XP successfully

Was able to retrieve data off of some really old 90's hard drives I had laying around from my uncle's PC. Retrieved old pictures and data just fine.

SATA and IDE connectors worked great.

Cons: Gotta keep everything in the box for storage because its not pretty to have laying out when people come over.

Other Thoughts: Will impress your family members that you can hot swap drives without restarting the PC.

4 out of 5 eggsAlright

Pros: Simple, both the device and power adapter are compact and it does what it is supposed to do.

Cons: The molex to SATA power adapter that came with the unit was faulty, it would periodically stop making contact and reset the attached unit. Replacing with another adapter worked fine.

Other Thoughts: The specifications say it handles drives up to 2TB and it definitely does not seem to work with 3TB drives. Would like to hope that a firmware update could add that functionality in the future but I'm not sure this type of device will (or can) receive a firmware update.

1 out of 5 eggswas good while it worked

Pros: Was able to read multiple storage formats when it worked

Cons: It didn't fry the HD like some other people reported but after a few uses it stopped reading from any of the inputs. It would only sit on our shelf until we needed it.
The drive letters appear in My Computer but it fails to see anything you connec to it. :-(

Other Thoughts: fortunately it didn't fry our drives and only stopped working.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product!

Pros: Reads everything!

Cons: None!

Other Thoughts: I absolutely love this product. I own a pc shop and use this for quickly backing up customer data. It's easily the most useful tool I've purchased in the past year. I have not used it to read any cards yet. I have only used it for accessing hard drives. I'm getting about 25MB/sec read on average.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: Does what it says it does. Working perfectly so far. Love the card readers. Too bad it doesn't support micro sd :(...whatever though

Cons: The top of it has a soft plastic feel to it. Easily scratched...but no big deal.

Should it ever'll be the only real con.

Other Thoughts: Seems to be "self sufficient". I hooked it up to my NetGear WNDR3700 and the router actually managed to recognize the drives that were hooked up to it. I note this because the router's manual says the router doesn't support anything that involves drivers/software installation/execution.
