3 out of 5 eggsHit n miss

Pros: -Compatibility

Cons: -Unstable - seems getting a good one is hit and miss, had two literally fry due to regular use. It's sad considering the compatibility and legacy support of the adapter.

1 out of 5 eggsShoddy power adapter

Pros: Seems to work well with recent drives. Didn't work with older PATA drives but my old USB2 version also didn't.

Cons: The power adapter connection is intermittent at the switch. It flashes on and off when you wiggle it which could be a disaster if it were connected to a drive. I'm returning it for a replacement. I also can't remove the drive power connecter for shipping it back.

Other Thoughts: This leaves me really questioning Vantec's quality control competency. All power adaptors should be tested before they ever leave a factory. This is failing manufacturing competency 101. I hope they test the replacement.

1 out of 5 eggsPoorly informed

Pros: easy to use itself, but not when IRQ locked up USB slot

Cons: There can be IRQ conflict happening using USB (external drives) or IDE or SATA cables (internal connection not using this product). When the copying time is like crazy due to IRQ conflicts, stop the copying or the HDD will be fried! It fries more quickly when there is no cooling fans.

IRQ conflict happened alot with USB slots, when it happens you need to unplug the device and reboot PC and connect the USB device into another USB slot. There is no instruction telling you to do this! and the HDD will be fried if you don't know that the copying time shown is crazy and you shouldn't copy over 40GB at a time and by every 40gb sized copying the HDD needed to be cooled for 1 hour.

Usually it's the HDD installed in your PC that has IRQ or reading issues, making the copying time go crazy! It's the OS and USB slot that works at one time and not at another time, you may need to installed a second boot OS to fix this as well as connecting the USB device to another USB slot! F Bill Gates the ret8rd who gives so little information on using PC! totally a noob!

1 out of 5 eggsNever worked once.

Pros: None. Didn't work with any of the drives tested in Windows or Linux.

Cons: Fails to enumerate on the USB3 hub(s) regardless of Windows or Linux, or drive used. Tried with six different SATA drives - all verified to work fine in another USB2 adapter immediately prior. Windows calls it an unknown device, Linux can't enumerate it at all, yet Vantec Support still acted like I should somehow see it in Disk Manager. As a heavy user of SATA to USB2 adapters, I was hoping this would do the same job with better speed, but no such luck.

Other Thoughts: I could have put up with the awkward, fragile and overall cheap-feeling design of the device itself if it had worked. It seems as if it's designed to eventually snap off a SATA power/data connector (unless you rest it upside-down, in which case, why bother putting LEDs on it?)

Vantec has had good products and bad ones, and this is not one of their winners.

1 out of 5 eggsZebik

Pros: Didn't work so can't list any.

Cons: When plugged in to three different Win XP computer unknown USB device. We have used other brands with no issues. These type of items come in very handy when changing out servers and moving data from old to new. Not sure if I just got a bad one but after checking online didn't see much good about Vantec. I'll return for credit if they allow and order a different brand.

When I hooked the PATA power adapter to Hard Drive wouldn't even spin up, removed the adapter but leave power and it would spin up. Spin up okay when SATA.

Also if did work it has way to many connector to hook up a drive. Current one we use had a power supply that connect to Sata or PATA, then a interface module with USB, and you do need a regular SATA cable to connect module.

This one if PATA you need a adapter to module, the power supply connect directly to module instead of Hard drive, overall just didn't like how much cable and wires

1 out of 5 eggsUnhappy Vantec does not stand behind broken product

Pros: Before the product locks-up, I see good disk transfer rates

Cons: Vantec admitted in other reviews that the product clearly has a serious problem which can only be resolved by RMA'ing the unit and obtaining a replacement. Because I am beyond the one-year warranty, Vantec would not RMA. I feel that Vantec should have made an exception because the unit clearly has a design problem, and locks-up after minutes of use, yet they were unwavering in their stance that only units within the warranty would be replaced. I realize this is their discretion, but it is also my discretion to let other potential buyers here that Vantec clearly had no interest in doing the right thing in this case.

3 out of 5 eggsUSB 3.0 Unstable

Pros: 3 connectors cover commonly used types of drive interfaces. USB 2.0 output seems stable.

Cons: USB 3.0 Unstable, plugged into HP P6-2326S desktop. Problem could be the NexStar, the USB 3.0 cable supplied by VanTec, or USB 3.0 on the HP. No other USB 3.0 cable, or ports available to troubleshoot. Transfer from Seagate Momentus XT drive seemed stable when USB 2.0 cable used.

Other Thoughts: Infrequent (4x in 1 yr) user of the device, so other's experience may differ.

3 out of 5 eggsBig mistake. Should've read the reviews

Pros: From ATTO, 200MB/s read and write on Vertex 3. For IDE/SATA to USB 3.0, the speed is decent. Just a note for those who didn't know, there's no adapter like this will hit >250MByte/s read speed. It's limited by the chipset.

Cons: Must use power adapter to use this device. Even for low power 2.5 devices. Read below.

Other Thoughts: I should have read reviews more thoroughly. This adapter is required to use the power adapter for it to power on. It will not take power from USB at all. This is a real big disappointment for me. I have also have a red adapter from China, that will supply power via USB and AC adapter, offers same performance as this one. I bought this one because I need an extra adapter for me to travel and didn't want to wait two weeks for the red one arrive. But I was wrong. This adapter cannot be used without having the power adapter. Now this adapter stays home, and I carry the red one with me.

If you want an IDE/SATA to USB 3.0 adapter that is able to power 2.5 devices via USB, then this device is NOT for you.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,
We value your input about our product and will strive hard to provide our customer with good quality products. This product provides the flexibility to connection 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives. The power requirement from the USB 3.0 is not enough for any 3.5" drives as a result we have to use the ac adapter for the additional power requirement. We also made the ac adapter to be a universal adapter so that you can travel with it. If you have questions about our products, or anything that are not functioning the way it is advertised, please feel free to write to us for assistance at We will try our best to support and answer your questions. Thank you for looking into our products.
Best Regards, Vantec

3 out of 5 eggsdisapointing

Pros: It does work for older IDE drives parcelly for usb 2.0 I did get it to work with a cdrom drive but only for a music disc.

Cons: It says it should work work USB 3.0 did not worked only connect to the USB 2.0 port ( even though when connect it suggested is would work fast on the USB3) The CDrom drive worked with music discs connected to the USB 3.0 port but not the usb 2.0

Other Thoughts: Does work but not they way it is supposed to.
