1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work with CD/DVD Burners

Pros: Easy to install

Cons: Does not work with CD/DVD Burners! When used with a CD/DVD Burner, the drive will work fine when reading CD's or DVD's. But as soon as you try to burn a CD or a DVD the computer will lock up.

Installed this in my Mac Pro. System hung in both Windows and OS X when trying to burn to CD or DVD.

1 out of 5 eggsThis product is useless!

Pros: None that I could name...

Cons: This product is described as a IDE to SATA adapter, in reality, it is a SATA to IDE!!!! COMPLETELY OPPOSITE OF WHAT IT WAS DESCRIBED! I'd advise you to not waist your time and money on this, and just buy a new SATA HDD...

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but ....

Pros: I bought this to use with a 2.5" SATA SSD in place of a 3.5" IDE hard drive in an old Apple Cube, which surprisingly still has an active enthusiast community. Using a custom mounting sled, the adapter and drive work OK in the Cube.

Cons: For some reason, the 4-pin power connector on the IDE side is reversed or upside-down from the normal orientation of a 3.5" drive. On a standard drive, the 5V (red) lead is closest to the IDE connector. On this adapter, the 12V (yellow) lead is next to the IDE connector. This may not matter in most applications, but in the tight confines of the Cube, it required modification of the power cable to get it to fit.

Other Thoughts: Pricier than other SATA-IDE adapters, but its components are covered, not exposed like other adapters.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Allowed use of a newer, and cheaper, SATA drive where an IDE drive was previously.

Cons: Somewhat thick if space is an issue

Other Thoughts: This little device allowed me to install a newer gen SATA drive into my Tivo S2 box that requires an IDE drive, which are harder to find and more expensive. With nothing more than what came in the box, it was up and running without issues, and continues to work fine.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great

Pros: Works perfectly on a traditional SATA II hard drive, no erros hard drive errors yet
Data transfer speed appears unaffected by the device which is great
Supports very large hard drives. No problems with my 1.5TB drive and 1TB drives.

Cons: Optical drives are a different story, you can expect to play movies, music, or read what ever is on it fine. CD, DVD, and BD burning almost always seems to result in an error.

Other Thoughts: LightScribe drives appear in incapable of of using lightScribe with this device

5 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Works for what I need it for. (using as an adapter for a sata hard drive in an original xbox)

Has cable select and is totally okay with locking/unlocking

Works a treat

Cons: Too wide to look cool with a laptop harddrive

5 out of 5 eggsanother buffoon buys without checking

Pros: Looks like it'd do its intended job, might give one a try if I ever need such a thing.

Cons: I don't know of any about the device, but some people buying it sure seem deficient.

Other Thoughts: Newegg put the product name on this item that the manufacturer uses. Speaking of, checking the product page link reveals this:

"Want to upgrade your old computer with the latest disk drive technology? You will have no problem with our ASA120. You can make an easy connection from IDE/ATA host controller to any SATA-I, SATA-II or SATA-III devices."

Moral: when in doubt, try looking at the info provided rather than going with whatever your notion of how a product works/should work. You'll save money, time, and of course face when you avoid posting a buffoonery filled review here.

1 out of 5 eggsNot as listed

Pros: It does exactly the opposite of it's described function!

Cons: Product is advertised/listed as an IDE to SATA adapter, but is really SATA to IDE. Its exactly the opposite of what I wanted/ordered.

Note to merchants: do not list a product if you are incapable of doing so correctly

1 out of 5 eggsI chose carefully...

Pros: With transparant operation this gender changer works without any additional drivers. The packaging is brilliant, plugged right into the back of my DVD burner without any modification and even fit with what room I have in my case. Since I don't have any more SATA ports, and I do have two unused IDE cable connections I thought this would be perfect for connecting a second Sata DVD burner to my system. Read/write speed across the connection seems irrelevant compared to the rather slow speed of an optical device. It seemed to work terrific until I tried to burn a DVD with it.

Fleeced customer, I was confused searching for this device as well, it seems like the nomenclature for gender changers need to be updated to include the direction, like "IDE connector to SATA device" since new MB's still have old interfaces, or "SATA connector to IDE device" if you have an old drive, since IDE to SATA converter does imply it is bi-directional. Perhaps Newegg will take note of our difficulty.

Cons: Does not work as intended. Unfortunately, burning causes the drive to lock up, and the drive is removed from system by windows and no longer recognized. The light on the drive stays lit, and I can't eject the DVD. I would try disabling, and re-enabling through device manager, however the device is not even visible again until after a reboot. I cant see how it could be a Windows problem, though, since this device is driverless and hardware transparent. At best, I would call it unreliable. The connection to the drive is not secure, and can come loose. Since it is designed to be plugged directly into the device it connects, mounting it to the case and using cables is also out of the question, unless you also purchase a double gendered cable.

Other Thoughts: With all the gender change devices available, I am shocked that I was not able to find even one that works reliably or has a decent rating. They all have had at least some issues with freezing, or even causing blue screens. I especially liked the idea of having the circuits enclosed in a mountable case, since connecting this device does require handling and placement in a metal case. Firmly securing seems to also be an issue. I am very dissapointed and dissatisfied since my purchase included the SATA drive as well and it seems that new devices are going in the direction of SATA as they should, leaving IDE technology to be retired. Though my MB is fairly new, I would gladly trade the IDE connections for SATA, or more expansion slots.
