5 out of 5 eggsVery Fast!

Pros: Very fast adapter. Faster than the thunderbolt adapter i purchased for $115. I tested the same SATA III drive in both adapters and this is what i got,

Thunderbolt: Write: 320 Read: 360

Startech Adapter: Write 360 Read: 410

Programs load like lightning. Cant beat the price.

Another pro is that is has an led hard drive activity light, its dimmed so its not obnoxious. This could possibly be the best $15 ive ever spent.

Cons: Nada

Other Thoughts: Late 2012 iMac 27"
i5 (3.2GHZ)
24 GB Ram
Graphics: Nvidia 675MX

1 out of 5 eggsdoesn't work

Pros: seemeed like a good idea

Cons: Does not work - at least not with the intended drive. If I had to do it again, I'd choose one with a separate power connection that looks more sophisticated.

5 out of 5 eggsAn extreamly simple solution!

Pros: One cable one drive! The simplest solutions to connect your 2.5" HDD or SSD to your laptop or desktop. No AC adapters no extra cables no more need for a external case. Confirmed that it will read off SMART info and am getting about 300mb/s read and 150mb/s write off a Plextor M5. Two small LED indicators (although I can't figure out what one of them is for)

Cons: I've confirmed that it will not power a 3.5" harddrive (needs more power). Also as mentioned above there is a bit of slow down and although the USB 3.0 standard is capable it will not get full speed out of you modern SSD.

Other Thoughts: It's simple and a fool proof solution. Not sure why no one came up with one of these in the past. The only thing that came close was Power eSATA which not too many motherboards or laptops support. I'll probably get a couple of these for diagnostic work or to use with an SSD for fast and large file transfers.

5 out of 5 eggsBe wary of some reviews

Pros: This item performs as stated. It is simple and it works.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: At least one person wrote "does not work on any usb with any hard drive even low wattage SSD"
However, that makes no sense. a USB 3.0 port can supply up to 4.5 watts. Older USB 2.0 ports can supply up to 2.5 watts. A typical 2.5" SATA drive may require 1.6 watts, but during normal operations is closer to 1.3 watts. There is absolutely no problem with "powered by USB" in most cases. You should, of course, verify the rated power requirements of any device you intend to connect via this or any similar adapter cable.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent, simple solution.

Pros: Normally I prefer a technological solution to be granular and have multiple options, but this item is just a simple adapter that was well thought out. So easy to use, and so universal is the interface emulation circuitry, that unless you get a damaged unit (statistically, every batch of a mass produced item will have a few damaged units, that's just a fact), you can be sure this will be dream to use.

Cons: Not so much a con, as I could have picked a unit with "IDE" connectivity, you are best advised to select a solution like this that also has a PATA connector if you aren't sure that SATA will be your exclusive use.

Other Thoughts: Technology doesn't get much simpler. I teach at the PA State Police Center for Digital Forensics and we have some of the most technologically advanced devices in existence, but this device is used by someone nearly everyday.

A note about negative reviews. This item has been produced and sold in mass, thus defective units will be produced, but consider that if the item was truly "garbage" would it still be in production? The device either does what it advertises or it fails to sell. A few reports of defective units are more than likely the user, not the equipment. Anyone who has worked in IT knows that greater than 95% of all reports of problems are actually user ignorance (see Study by Cornell University on user to device implementation of technology to confirm this claim). You simply could not sell so many of a unit if none worked, rather you get a single ignorant user who claims a problem, and provides no context or verification of their claims. Issues surrounding usability or specific use problems are one thing, but simply dismissing the entire unit as a waste means you and a few other individuals are saying that your group of maybe 200 problem users are right and that the group of non-problem users numbering perhaps 30,000 or more are wrong. In other words 30,000 people who encounter no problems and are able to use their device without difficulty are somehow delusional, and the small group who believe the item to be flawed are correct: that is simply non sequitur.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: It works as advertised. I was able to image a slow HDD from a laptop onto a SSD.

Cons: Not free!

Other Thoughts: Great product. It's easy to use and works as advertised.
