Yep, that was the problem
- Pros: What a nifty little doodad! A lot of potential in a little tiny package. And pretty cheap, too.
- Cons: When nothing really happened on turning on the machine (more often than not, XP seemed aware there was a USB mass storage device, but it was not to be found, and none of the drives ever spun up), I first looked for support from a manufacturer site. Found the site, but "sparse" is the best description I can think of. So Ixquick also turned up (duh) the Newegg review page. After seeing a couple allusions to power supply problems (though I still haven't gotten to a review that experienced it first hand), I decided to skip some run around, took the side off my case, and plugged the power right in proper. And Bob's your uncle, there was a wd20 G:\ staring me right in the face. I may try shaking or hammering or submersing (jk) the ac adapter, but it seems this will be an rma on an otherwise keen device. Woopity craph! So close.
- Other Thoughts: Factor the percentage of positive reviews, NewEgg's customer service, and the potential potential of this little gewgaw, and I'd call it worth the gamble. I'd give it an even 2 1/2 eggs, if I could. Heck, I got a broken one and I still haven't lost my optimism- I still fully expect it to be downright nifty. How do I indicate (for the blue caption) that I purchased this from NewEgg?
- Pros: low price
- Cons: usb cord could be longer and more flexible
- Other Thoughts: something came loose in the adapter but it still works
Adapter is fine, power supply is a fire hazard
- Pros: adapter works splendidly with another power supply; higher average throughput (~ 15mb/s vs 11) than other unit I own in the same plastic molding
- Cons: Power supply shorted out, popped, and started smoking the first time it was plugged in. All connections were fine. Thought it took out my brand new HD with it for a few minutes... Seems to be a general complaint - no wonder they are being flushed in bundles for $6...
