Nice low-end board, even for Ubuntu
- Pros: Low cost MB/CPU/Cooler package - fast enough for most applications, especially for always-on applications. Esp. like the two SATA II ports (over the previous versions single PATA/IDE port). Can support 2 Gig of RAM, works well with WinXP and Ubuntu (two OS I tested with).
- Cons: Problem with video on almost all OS except WinXP (see Other Thoughts for solution). Heatsink is a bit tall for many "tiny PC" cases, so be careful picking a case if you stray from conventional cases to "mini-ITX boards" - the CPU cooling fan/heatsink are a bit tall compared to similar Via and other MBs like this.
- Other Thoughts: Video problem - turns out this chipset is not compatible with most "sis" drivers, if you reconfigure Ubuntu to use "vesa" driver instead, 1280x1024 and 1024x768 work fine.
Great board for the money
- Pros: Great board for car pc. Powerful enough to run most non graphic intensive apps and low power requirements.
- Cons: heatsink is too tall. Would much rather have a smaller heatsink with a fan (noise isn't an issue for me)
i wouldn't reccomend this board for an htpc.
- Other Thoughts: layout of the board could be a bit better, power supplier connection is in an akward spot for most mini-itx cases.
BIOS is slow to start up.
Not a good Linux board!
- Pros: Inexpensive, power-efficient, compact.
- Cons: The SiS chipset on this board has virtually non-existent Linux support. I finally managed to get 2D acceleration working after hours on forums, but MythTV still jumps and skips. 3D acceleration is a no-go for the indefinite future. Why didn't Intel just put a G35 chipset or something in it? Why support their competitor?! The CPU also seems to run hot. It idles around 44C when sitting in front of two high-flow 80MM fans, and has hit the mid-60s under full load. It seems to be basically unsuitable for any case where the cooling fans are not aligned directly with an adjacent PSU fan, unless these are actually desirable temperatures.
