3 out of 5 eggsFoxconn D70S-P Intel Celeron 1037U 1.80GHz Intel NM70 Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU/VGA Combo

Pros: good value, runs fast with SSD. looks solid.

Cons: Overheating disease even on such 17w CPU

it does come with serious design flaw with the heat sink, let me explain why:
there are two metal screw stands on the bottom of the CPU heat sink allowing 2 screws to pass through from the back of mobo. however, the stands are too high/tall/long that barely make the contact between the heat sink and the CPU die. How do I know? well, initially I had same overheating problem as people described in advance. then I tried to apply new thermal paste on the CPU only to lower the temperature, and install heat sink back as normal. result: overheat and shut down. I took off the heat sink and GUESS WHAT? There is barely any thermal paste on the cleaned CPU heat sink ! that means the CPU is kinda fanless and heatsinkless,no wonder ppl have overheating problem.

in order to keep this mobo (I don’t want to waste time and $ to ship it back),I have to pull off a position adjustable north bridge heat sink from my i7 3770k gaming PC to install on this little CPU, this thing makes direct contact with the CPU Die together with a Enermax 120mm temperature controlled LED fan.
The result is instant and significant: load at 40C and idle at 35C which is completely useable now.

Other Thoughts: Foxconn makes good products OEM, but they really should do some basic testing on their house brand products.

3 out of 5 eggsBought 2 - Need to revise review

Pros: Small, affordable, low power consumption, quite powerful for what it is.

Responsive and Competent Tech Support.

Cons: Poor workmanship on the heatsink attachment, bios needed a revision.

Other Thoughts: I bought 2 of these. One is running as a NAS in a rather large mini Itx server case with plenty of cooling. Fan ran at over 6000 rpm. Turning on smart-fan made it quiet. All was ok with this build.

Second one was going to be an HTPC so I put it in a smallish itx case. Immediately, the temps went too high and the PC kept shutting down. Realized that smart fan function was broken, fan speed did not increase with temps. Contacted support and withing a couple of days they provided new bios with fixed smart fan functionality. Kudos for that. It turns out that now smart fan would slowly increase fan speed and eventually it would become too loud. Support suggested that I check the thermal paste. I had to remove the heatsink. The paste looked hard & brittle and it did not look like it was making contact. I replaced it with arctic silver and again the temps rose rapidly. Something was not right. The heatsink had 2 rubber posts that I thought were too tall. I removed those and now the heatsink is making perfect contact. Temps are 20 degrees lower than before. Still a bit high for my taste but at least the HTPC is not crashing anymore. I think FoxConn would do well to put a slightly bigger/better heatsink on this baby and it will be a great embedded solution.

p.s. this htpc is powerfull enough to play 1080p mkv in foreground using xbmc while in the background wmc is recording 3 tv shows off an hdhomerun prime. Very impressive for the little celeron...

4 out of 5 eggsGood board; stock heatsink is terrible

Pros: Works perfectly with Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7. Integrated graphics can play Portal on 1080p. It's actually pretty responsive with a 7200rpm laptop drive and 4GB of RAM.

Cons: Stock cpu heatsink makes horrible contact and the fan is way too loud. Idle temps were about 70°C. I replaced it with a Zalman NBF47, and now /full load/ temps under OCCT are 46°C.

5 out of 5 eggsLet's rate it on what it is, not what you wish it was!

Pros: This is running a digital sound processing system 24/7, perfectly stable for the last month, CPU temp 46 degrees C with a continuous 20% CPU load. It's running Windows 7.

Cons: While a passive heat sink would be nice, once the CPU fan is switched to "Smart Fan" in the bios, I can't hear it.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We thank you for your kind words and we appreciate all valuable feedback from customers like you.

3 out of 5 eggsBest you can find for the price. One major caveat.

Pros: I am using this board for NAS. So far working great with no issues.

Cons: I thought this board should have very low idle power consumption based on the specs. I have 27 Watts at Idle with just 4GB memory installed with picopsu. That is kind of high for todays standards.

The processor heatsink does not completely touch the processor die. This was causing the temps to hover around 70-80C idle. I had to remove the padding under the Heatsink for it to touch the die completely. The thermal pound was applied on the wrong side under the heatsink. I have to move it so it touches the proessor die. Now the temps are 40C idle..

PCI Express is not MSATA compatible. That would have saved me one SATA port for attaching additional HDD for NAS.

5 out of 5 eggsReally nice, could use more SATA ports

Pros: Tiny, very little power usage, powerful for its size.
Looks well made. .

Cons: No stand offs for the mini pci express, I had to make my own.
Default bios settings have the cpu fan blowing at full speed 6700 rpm.
Manual uses tiny print, unreadable.

Other Thoughts: I bought it to build a NAS. Seems perfect for that so far....

1 out of 5 eggsWhat a disappointment

Pros: excellent low tdp processor. but only one memory slot? are you kidding me? totally messed up an otherwise nice board. I almost bought it.

Cons: only one memory slot.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Sorry for the inconvenience, this is the design of the motherboard.
Any other query in the future, please contact us freely.

Best Regards,
