Question 1

Can this device be plugged in and used within a few minutes? I need something that does not require me to install any software. Something that installs itself and then just works.

Hello,
    My experiences with this product have not been very good. Although advertised as a plug-and-play device, I had to do several driver installations and re-installations before it would transmit video or audio to my television.
   After that, the device never performed as expected: when transmitting video and audio to my TV, the device would crash and a restart would be necessary just to try again. It was tested on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 (different computers) with no success using an HDMI connector.
   I contacted EVGA who sent me a new one which had the same issue.
   Long story short: this didn't work for me. If you buy it, I hope it works for you.

Question 2

Does it support lower resolutions, specifically, 1680x1050?

It does support lower resolutions, this unit is currently on a system set at 1280 x 1024. We've used these EVGA's on various systems set at various res' such as 1600 x 1200. I haven't had it on a 1680 x 1050 but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Question 3

The description states DVI and HDMI out, i don't see it in the images, is there an onboard HDMI port, or is there a DVI->HDMI adapter that is included in the kit?

There is one Fully integrated support for HDMI 1.4 including xvYCC, Deep color and 5.1 digital surround sound.port and one DVI Supports both VGA and Digital signals port.

The adapter that comes with it is a DVI to VGA

Question 4

The description does not indicate this adapter is Windows 8 compatible.  It only shows Windows 7, Vista, XP Support.  I have an HP desktop that came loaded with Windows 8.1, and I wish to set up 2 digital monitors.  The 2 ports are DVI-D and Analog.  Is this adapter fully compatible with Windows 8.1?

It uses DisplayLink drivers. It is compatible with Windows 8 and 8.1. It works great with the Surface Pro. I also have it connected to a powered USB 3.0 hub with no issues running 2 external HD monitors and the Surface touch screen.

It has 1 DVI port and 1 HDMI port, so 2 HD ports.  It comes with a DVI->VGA adapter. Depending on what inputs your monitors have you may need to get an additional adapter.

I've seen some people saying this does not work with OSX, has this been updated to work with OSX? If so I will be  ordering one and trying it. I just ordered a different adapter that came in today and did not work, with either my Windows machine or my Mac. I just want to make sure what I buy and get shipped to me is going to work.

I have used this with my MBP just fine. If you have a Mac with USB3 you should be able to connect with a DisplayPort AND HDMI device. Currently I just connect my DisplayPort monitor to the thunderbolt port and the EVGA and DVI monitor to USB. Maxes out at 1920x1200, but works like a charm.

You just have to get updated drivers from displaylink dot com.

Is this device backward compatible with USB 2.0?

Yes, however it does seem to work better using usb3. I have used it on a system that didn't have usb3 and it worked fine for normal day to day stuff.

I am confused as to how you would go about using this single device to add two additional monitors.  Do you buy some kind of split cable that would go from this device,  out to two additional monitors?

You wouldn't need a split cable, but rather a standard DVI/HDMI cable which would connect to the applicable port on this device and the input terminal of the connected monitor.

The USB 3.0 interface connects this device to the host computer, and the device supports connecting two additional monitors via those DVI/HDMI ports and a direct DVI/HDMI cable connection. Software packaged with this device, once installed, will perform on-the-fly software rendering on those additional displays.

In short, the answer to your question is "Yes - you would need to supply a DVI and/or HDMI cable to physically connect additional monitors to this device."

does it include dvi cable for the monitor?

The EVGA UV Plus Display adapter (square4”: x 4” x 1”)
A micro USB to USB cable for connection to computer
A DVI-VGA adapter
Installation CD and Quick Guide.

These things work great on any monitor and system (not sure about macs).  We use 3+ monitors and most of our Dell computers only take 2, so we have purchased many of these and they all are a quick 2 min. install of disk and plug and play.  Easy.

Question 10

I am confused.  Does this device allow for connection of two monitors,  or just one?  If two,  how does that work ... need a special splitter cable,  or what?

This devise will allow you to connect two monitors to a laptop or desktop. There is a USB connection receptacle that plugs into the computer and then into this device.

You can then connect the second monitor via HDMI or DVI cable.

I have used it with no issues for 2 years.
