1 out of 5 eggsPPA 2-Port SATA PCI Controller Card Model 1301 - Retail

Pros: Its cheap

Cons: Tried several drivers and .oem files under windows xp installer. Tried drivers from VIA site others have mentioned. This thing almost worked with the VIA drivers, windows installer recognized the attached SATA drive but could not successfully partition the drive.

Other Thoughts: Sure would be sweet if the manufacture included drivers known to work and a floppy disc for windows XP installer so you can install windows to a SATA drive with this adapter. Save your self a lot of headache and just get a new main board with SATA II.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Like it Should

Pros: Once it's installed, you don't know it's there.

Cons: Drivers aren't the right drivers, have to manually install the drivers, even running the setup executable from VIA didn't work.

Other Thoughts: I don't use the RAID so I can't comment on that.

As has been said, go to VIA Arena and search for "Discrete Serial ATA RAID controllers VT6420/1", then get the file called "VIA V-RAID Driver". Stick the card in and install drivers by adding a new device and selecting "Have Disk..." You have to manually find and install the driver, Windows will not find it for you. Choose any of the "VIA RAID Controller - xxxx" in the list. Reboot. After that, use Windows disk manager as usual.

3 out of 5 eggsTough setup

Pros: Its inexpensive. Works. I had some trouble getting it running though. Definitely learned some new stuff installing this one.

Cons: Hard to install! I went through 3 sets of drivers and ended up using the ones suggested in the past posts. Took some research to get it going since PPA Intl had no help on their website. Used the help forum from a different similar product.

Other Thoughts: After installing the drivers and having the VIA RAID utility actually working I went to Start, Run, then typed diskmgmt.msc Then you can have windows search for the drive, format/partition it and add it to My Computer.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks good with eSata to Sata cable

Pros: Does what it said. Enabled me to use my eSata attached external drive.

Cons: Not eSata. I bought this thinking it was eSata only to find out it wasn't. However, I was able to find a low-price Sata to eSata cable that allowed me to use it.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy install when using the VIA drivers as suggested in other reviews. Quick addition of SATA.

Cons: This is not an eSATA! This has 2 sata ports one happens to be on the outside. Only 1.5 not 3.0 SATA.

Other Thoughts: Install this on a Dell Poweredge 2600 for use with external hard drive eSATA for backups. Drive shows in SBS 2003 but not sure how well it will work for our backups because, it doesn't appear to be hot swap. We only trade out drives once a week so hopefully it won't be a problem.

4 out of 5 eggsDrivers are a pain

Pros: Works great when u figure it out

Cons: Listen to Whitenight770....use the driver he suggests and it works fine. My system wouldn't boot without the right drivers. Go to the VIA site and grab the "Discrete Serial ATA RAID controllers VT6420/1" as he suggests...then it boots right up.

Other Thoughts: please supply the proper drivers?!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: it works really good now-downloaded driver from via per other reviewers tip-also used cd-took me three days of agony to get it going-but its going great and was well worth the extended effort!!!

Cons: non ,really-although i did hook this up in an external enclosure that was not working and used the power adaptor with sata cable hooked to hard drive and right to pci card-(would not work until i unhooked power adaptor and got power from pci slot power adaptors(turns on with computer now)-not the most desirable way to do this but it works!hard drive shows up in my computer every time!!!

Other Thoughts: great- i even utilized junk external enclosure-(thats completely gutted of all electronics)

5 out of 5 eggsAwsome

Pros: Works great at a great price!

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I followed the instructions on installing but could format the hard drive. Realized I had to put in the hard drive cd in to format it.

4 out of 5 eggsNo driver problems here

Pros: I got this concurrently with a new Seagate 7200.10 320G, and using HDTach to test showed over 60 MB/s (I already forgot the exact number).
I read the warnings about the driver disk, but it looks like they have that straightened out, now. The driver that came on my mini-cd worked just fine, the first time.

Cons: During boot, the text suggests that this card can do RAID (can it really? I didnt expect that) but it has only 1 SATA plug internally and 1 plug externally. It's just a little weird.
