5 out of 5 eggsWorked like a charm

Pros: allowed me to use my Firewire external HDD on my new PC!

Cons: had to connect portable HDD to back of computer, but not the fault of this card

Other Thoughts: bought the HDD when I had a macintosh laptop, and needed this when I got a new PC - this card solved my problem until the drive died a few years ago & I haven't used it since... but I have no reason to think it wouldn't still work if I needed it

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great Out Of The Box With Windows 7 64bit

Pros: Cheap.
Plug and Play.
Works right out of box with no need to manually install drivers or install any bloatware.

Cons: Eats up a PCI slot when normally motherboards I purchase have native Firewire support but it seems like Firewire is slowly being phased out and it was something I overlooked when I selected my newest motherboard.

Other Thoughts: When I bought my latest motherboard (Gigabyte z68ap-d3) I overlooked the fact that it didn't have Firewire (assumed it would just have it). And ironically when I was purging a bunch of old unused PC hardware sitting in the closet I threw out a Firewire card that cost me $70 back in the day. Ugghh. I only need Firewire for my DV camcorder and this product was the PERFECT solution. It's cheap and it works out of the box and you don't even have to download a driver or insert a CD (it didn't come with one). Using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Service Pack 1 - 100% plug and play. It was installed and running before I even hit the desktop (didn't even get a new hardware detected message). Hit the Device Manager and it was there. Plugged in my DV camcorder and it worked.

5 out of 5 eggsGreatest Thing Since Aspirin

Pros: My firewire port headache is over! I've been using a Flex Radio Software Defined Radio on my ASUS mobo onboard JMicron 1394 port for over a year with no problem. Several weeks ago, when I fired up the radio, I got No Device Found. Even though the onboard port showed working properly in Device Manager it could no longer see the radio. The repair folks at Flex Radio suggested I try a PCI 1394 card with either a VIA or TI chipset. So, I gave this one a try and, bingo, the radio is communicating with the PC again.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: In searching the Flexc Radio forums and knowledge base I found others have experienced the same problem with an onboard JMicron 1394 port. Here's one comment that prompted me to get this inexpensive PCI 1394 card:

The JMicron firewire port is integrated into the motherboard and the chipset is JMicron. Which basically means that it operates from the Northbridge chipset and is all but essentially software based. There is some chip there to facilitate the processing of your firewire signal but the software does the majority of the work. A dedicated firewire card with a VIA or TI chipset is hardware based and recommended.

2 out of 5 eggsProblems booting after install

Pros: Works great with XP Machine

Cons: I've tried this card in two different Dell Optiplex 780 towers, both brand new with windows 7 32 bit installed and I get memory errors the moment I try to boot the machine with this thing installed. I can't even get in to safe mode to see if it's just a driver issue. As soon as I remove the card, no more problem. I really expected more from this card but I guess that's what I could expect from a $7 card.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Pretty much plug and play with windows xp sp3. I bought this because of somebody elses review stating it worked with the Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40 interface. It worked like a charm for me. I only need 1 firewire port and maybe a second in the future. Any more and you might get bandwidth issues. Anyway, works great.

Cons: None, works like a charm.

Other Thoughts: Just make sure you don't need a certain chipset before buying this card. Some audio interfaces require a Texas instrument chipset.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks!

Pros: No fuss, no mess, it just works.

Cons: At this price, I don't think anyone could have a legitimate complaint. Many people spend more on their morning coffee and bagel.

Other Thoughts: Once I had ubuntu set up, I just plugged in a external firewire drive, and it mounted immediately. It just worked. I didn't even have to install software.
