This PCIe to PCI Adapter Card lets you use low profile PCI expansion cards in a server or desktop motherboard PCI Express slot. Compliant with PCI Express Specification 1.0a and PCI Specification 2.2, the adapter card connects through a PCIe 1x slot to provide a low profile PCI slot in its place. A spare full size bracket for PCI Express card is also included for use in larger desktop or server PCI Express slots.

A versatile solution, the adapter card converts PCIe to PCI or PCI-X; a built-on LP4 power connector links the card to the computer power supply, allowing you to install universal voltage PCI cards (3.3V/5V).The adapter card offers an economical solution that lets you extend the usability of older or extra PCI Bus cards in newer PCIe capable systems.

To ensure suitable installation in any low profile server or desktop computer, the PCIe/PCI adapter features an innovative bracket design that adapts and secures the low profile PCI or PCI-X card into the converted slot.

4 out of 5 eggsIt worked.

Pros: It worked. No drivers needed. Fits well.

Cons: Not bus powered. I don't like the molex connector just hanging there. I connected the cards using a ribbon cable so the bracket for the riser card just has a hole in it.

Other Thoughts: I used this with my old M-Audio Delta 1010LT audio card. I switched to an ITX mobo with only one PCI-e x16 slot. I used the only two brackets I had in the case. I used one to mount the audio card and the other to mount the adapter. After connecting the cards with a ribbon cable Windows 7 recognized the audio card and the drivers installed without a problem. All my DAWs seem to play nice with it so far.

1 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work

Pros: Good concept. I am sure this is a life saver if it works but....

Cons: Didn't work, at least not for me. Have an Asus X99 Rampage V. Have my old PCI Claro Halo card and connected it to the motherboard. Windows 7 recognized it, I installed the drivers but the sound was very choppy. It lasted for 10 seconds and then the sound just gave out. I rebooted and got it back but it was an endless cycle, got choppy and eventually gave out.

Other Thoughts: You're taking a gamble on this. PCI cards, especially on motherboards which do not natively support them were never QA'd for them. Good thing is that this adapter has a standard return policy so I should be able to return it. Hope the rest of you have better luck than I did. :)

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Randy,

We wanted to reach out to you and apologize for the experience you had with our adapter card.

Our PEX1PCI1 essentially functions as a bridge adapter between the PCI card and PCI Express expansion slot. Perhaps the issue you are experiencing is related to the sound card you were installing, or the drivers for that device? If at all possible, is there another computer with a free PCI slot that you can try installing the card into for testing purposes?

Additionally, we recommend ensuring the 4-pin Molex power connector is connected properly to an available Molex plug on your power supply.

If you have not yet returned the card, you can feel free to contact us and reference case number 303-210659; we would be happy to help troubleshoot your issue.

You can also respond here and we will be sure to follow up with you!

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work

Pros: Looks great in the add!

Cons: Does not work with any card i plug into it! No manual, no disc no documentation what so ever. Nothing to say if you need or don't need drivers. No way to know what is compatible with it.. I would not waste my time with this device!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello David,

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on our PEX1PCI1. We apologize for the issue you experienced, and we would like to help resolve it.

Our PEX1PCI1 will not require drivers to function, as it only acts as a bridge adapter for the PCI card. If you are not getting any functionality with the PCI cards you are using in this adapter, we recommend ensuring the Molex power connector for our card is connected to a Molex connector from your computers power supply.

Also, if possible we recommend trying the PCI cards in another PCI slot, just to verify the cards are functioning normally.

We apologize if you did not receive a manual with this adapter, as a manual should have been included, indicating both the installation steps and the power connector requirement. You can find the manual on our product page here:

If your card is still not working, this product does come with a 2-year warranty and we would be happy to replace it for you if it is faulty. Feel free to contact us and reference case number 303-206934.

You can also respond here and we will be sure to follow up!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks as expected

Pros: Works.

Cons: I had to modify my chassis (cut into it) to make my card fit but that's not StarTech's fault.

Other Thoughts: I would've given this five stars because it works but a couple years back I ordered one and it was DOA. oh well.

1 out of 5 eggsPoor quality control

Pros: As advertised it is an adapter.

Cons: DOA on arrival, capacitor not soldered to board, I hadn't noticed it was missing initially and proceeded to install my HT Claro XT with an adapter for the support bracket. After plugging in the power and starting the system all I hear is a pop and now I have a dead $250 Claro, Thank you Startech.

1 out of 5 eggsDidn't work :(

Pros: Would be awesome, if it had more power options.

Cons: I tried to use this as a birdge between a PCI sound card and a PCI-e 1x on my motherboard. The bridge didn't have the power the keep it's self going when sound would be playing thru the card. Too bad, have to find PCI-e sound card now.

Other Thoughts: I hear it works well for RAID controllers?

5 out of 5 eggsInvisible to OS (that's a good thing)

Pros: Tested using a Promise TX4300 SATA card. The Promise card asserted it self with no problems on a P6T Motherboard while plugged in to this adapter. As expected, data transfer rates did not appear to be hampered by this adapter as the PCI slot is slower than a PCI Express 1x slot (just Google pci vs pcie x1)

Cons: Just like previous reviewer, bracket a bit tricky.

Other Thoughts: I can recommend this card if you need to sustain a PCI card you can't replace, on a motherboard without any available PCI slots. I imagine the only limitation you may run in to is if your PCI card will fit and be usable while on top of this card.

Note: Data transfer rates tested in standard AHCI mode (Non-RAID). Tests ran transferring data to identical hard drives. Initial test of a single 1G tif file gave heavy favor to the Promise card. A sustained test of an 8G folder of 19 large .tif files shifted favor to the Intel chipset, moving the data a mere 2% faster, I suspect the source hard drive had a significant impact.
