1 out of 5 eggsDOA - Poor support

Pros: Based on the device's specification and what I was after (SATA-3 and JBOD), it should have been slam-dunk wonderful. Alas, it was not to be.

Cons: Product appears to have been DOA. Not "seen" by two different systems, an older Asus P7P55 board and a Lenovo ThinkStation. In fact, it BSOD'd the Asus box. Tech support seemed listless and uninterested. He did say it appeared to be hardware, so either take it back to store or RMA. RMA is done through website, so I filled out the online form and submitted it. No return email from Apricorn. So I returned it and bought a different adapter from a different manufacturer that works properly.

Other Thoughts: The product is well reviewed and probably would have worked well for me. I do understand that DOAs happen. However, the support experience was unacceptable. For this reason, I will avoid Apricorn products in the future.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks Great on my 2010 MAC Pro!

Pros: Easy install: just mount the SSD in the drive and plug into an empty PCIe slot. Open Disk Utility and format. Used Mac Migration to migrate my old iMac HD boot drive to the Apricorn Solo X2 w/Samsung Pro 84- 512GB SSD. SSD is fast: Black Magic Speed tested at write: 478Mb/s and Read at 492Mb/s!

Cons: Price. But hopefully the $30 rebate will come through and got it for $10 off at Newegg so would bring the price to $60. But cannot always count rebates.

Other Thoughts: Does not use up one of my 4 drive bays for the SSD.

2 out of 5 eggsSlower than MB SATA

Pros: It wasn't DOA!

Cons: This product ran my Samsung 840 pro at about 2/3 of what I got from my motherboard's SATA controllers. It also cause the SLI setting in the Nvidia control panel to disappear.

Other Thoughts: Though I was able to find a use for it in my wife's computer which doesn't have SATA III, it was useless in my main, Haswell computer. Get it only for an SSD holder for a system that doesn't have SATA III.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Performance, works with FreeBSD

Pros: - Fast! 267 MiB/sec writes - 506 MiB/sec reads on an Intel 720 series SSD.
- Works with FreeBSD - uses the Marvell 88SE9182 chipset
- Awesome that it has an extra port in addition to the SSD slot.
- Fits in SuperMicro 1U rack servers (with a riser card).
- Appears to support port multipliers!!

Cons: none!

Other Thoughts: Benchmarking (using bonnie++) revealed that the controller preforms awesomely, even faster than the built in MB SATA controller on this SuperMicro server. Performance numbers above are likely the performance of the SSD (ie; that's the bottle neck, not the card). Perfect.

FreeBSD recognizes the card with no issues:

ahci0: <Marvell 88SE9182 AHCI SATA controller> port 0xe040-0xe047,0xe030-0xe033,0xe020-0xe027,0xe010-0xe013,0xe000-0xe00f mem 0xf7520000-0xf75201ff irq 16 at device 0.0 on pci1

5 out of 5 eggsMost Excellent Apricorn SOLO X2 PCI-e Card

Pros: 5 Minute, "Easy as Pie" Install in Slot 2's - 16x PCI-e Lane.
Sata III, 6 GBPS Interface speed on a "Jurassic" Macpro3,1 Desktop.
SSD Screws included. No Driver sw needed on a Mac.
$20 Apricorn M-I-R.
Superfast Shipping from Newegg - Arrived the next day !

Cons: None at this point.

Other Thoughts: Loaded it with a "C-Note" 240GB OCZ Vertex 460 SSD from Newegg.
on The Early 2008 MacPro 2.8 Ghz Quad(8)Core Desktop.
Blackmagic Benchmarked 495.8 MB/s Writes and 477.1 MB/s Reads.
Waiting to add a OCZ 480GB SSD to it when the time is right….
and get even higher "Back to the Future" Speed.

5 out of 5 eggsIt works

Pros: This thing really works! In a 2012 Mac Pro, it SIGNIFICANTLY increases HDD speeds over the native SATA II bus.

Cons: none

4 out of 5 eggsNot as easy as it looks online

Pros: Easy to attach my SSD and plug into my MacPro (5,1). Mac quickly recognized the device and formatting my new SSD was quick and easy. I combined this with a Samsung 750GB SSD and they make quite a pair.

Cons: To physically install the device only took a few minutes, the actual setup and moving of my OS to this new SSD took several days. A few of the issues:
1. To use "restore" in OSX disk utility, the target drive must be "as big as or bigger" than the source drive. This is not usually the case when moving to a SSD because they're so expensive. You likely have a 1 or 2TB system drive and are moving to a 500GB or 750GB SSD. I only had 350GB on my source drive, but because it was 2TB HDD and my SSD was 750GB, Restore did not work.
2. Time Machine - would no work either. I have my iTunes and iPhoto library on different disks and a Time Machine restore did not work.
3. I thought I could just install "Mavericks" on my new SSD while keeping my original OS drive in place. Nope. Because there was no "recovery partition" on the new SSD, this would not work. Nice of Apple to put this partition on every system, but a pain when you can't install on a disk without one.
4. Clean install - with no physical DVD for OSX Mavericks, was tricky but I finally got it. Actually installed an old Mountain Lion OS on the SSD from the DVD (this added in the "recovery partition"), then downloaded Mavericks on my original HDD through the App store, then installed Mavericks on the SSD, changed the target boot drive to my SSD, and finally migrated my data over from my old 2TB drive to my SSD.
This was a CHORE and took several days to complete. Moving 350 GB of data around took a lot of time on each attempt but SUCCESS was finally mine!!
The Outcome - very, very nice. My MacPro does run much quicker and I don't get the spinning beach ball near as much as I used to. Programs open quickly and searches are very quick. I really like the device and it has added a little time before I need to upgrade. No glitches since install. I'm considering this project a success - though it took a LOT LONGER than I ever expected.
Only thought - they give you an extra SATA connector - but they put it on the inside. I can see for PC that may help, but not Mac. Why not put one extra adapter on the inside and one on the outside?

Other Thoughts: I was very surprised by how long it took New Egg to get this too me. I almost always receive my goods within a week. I placed the order online on 11/25 and it didn't arrive until 12/9 - that's 14 days. Giving 4 days for the Thanksgiving break and that's still 10 days. Not their usual speed - but I'm sure they were busy for their "Black Friday" month of November.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome for 3.1 Mac Pro

Pros: This product works extremely well in an Early 2008 Mac Pro. I installed this on the PCIe 2.0 x16 slot with a 250GB Samsung 840 Evo and it has given machine it's life back.

Cons: Set up can be a bit confusing for Bootcamp.

3 out of 5 eggsDidn't work on the Asus P6X58D Premium

Pros: I reviewed this well for use on an Asus P7H57D-V EVO. I indicated I was going to try it with an Asus P6X58D Premium. Both the card, then after a restart, and the SSD installation processes went well.

Cons: But I encountered about 66% of all the speeds with the same OCZ Vertex 3 SSD (DiskMark 3.02 x64) when installed on the Apricorn. I contacted technical support. It seems there must be a conflict with the Marvell drivers for the two different Marvell chips on the aging Asus P6X58D Premium and the newer Apricorn. Seems the Apricorn doesn't show up in the Device Manager either, so trying a direct route for driver installation seems out too.

Other Thoughts: Gave it three eggs, because I would try it again, if I had another mainboard. It just seems motherboard dependent.
