5 out of 5 eggsPowerful little box

Pros: This unit is small, contrary to what some have said it is not loud. It's powerful for its size. Great for a start up server or workstation. Includes riser card. Has plenty of USB headers inside, and has a USB port inside the case which can be used to boot the system.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: This is a great little box with a great supermicro legacy standing behind it. I purchased a caddy that allows me to install two 2.5 HDD or SSDs. Has built in RAID from Intel and adaptec.

5 out of 5 eggsLove these things

Pros: Great value, dual NIC, IPMI, small, low power consumption, pretty quiet

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have 7 of these running at customer sites, 6 as pfSense firewalls and 1 as a Debian Samba server. I couldn't be more pleased with these servers.

5 out of 5 eggsI have a D525

Pros: Hey so I do not own this case, I bought my D525 on a Jetway board. And put it in another case. However what I wanted to tell all of you is I have 8GB of G. Skill memory running in my D525. People will tell you it is up to the Motherboard. however that is incorrect it is up to the IMC in the processor. Something else you should know, you do not have to go looking for low speed ram. There are sometimes insane deals on Laptop Dimm memory, in fact i got my two 4GB 1600mhz sticks from newegg.com for 29.99 so keep that in mind when buying a D525.

Cons: No Virtualization on ATOM chips. Manufacturers need to start packaging Xeon Atoms.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Server Awful Warranty

Pros: Low power 15 wat draw
IPMI
CHEAP
Makes a great firewall

Cons: Supermicro warranty is awful, as in totally awful.
1. Will charge you for a cross ship.
2. Will send a refurb or repair for a new product.
3. Will take their sweet time doing it.
I love supermicro engineering and hate the supermicro warranty. For largish orders I usually look for a supermicro rebrander who will give a better warranty.

Other Thoughts: Supermicro has said they are fixing their warranty, by adding cross ship for the first year etc for server, my experience as of this week is that it hasn't changed at all.

5 out of 5 eggsVery capable Atom

Pros: Decent processor for a lot of applications. Low power consumption (avg 24w with ssd drive). Intel RAID with plenty of SATA ports.

Cons: There are other competitive processors/boards around this price level which are more capable than the atom processor.

Other Thoughts: I never gave ATOMs much credit, until I owner this one. It's quite the capable little fellow - I run a Windows Server 2012 with AD, DNS, IIS and a small sqlanywhere on this box for 10 PCs and so far so good. I really like the power consumption - I don't feel guilty leaving this server on. I couldn't get the IPMI feature to work yet, but that's because it's not as 1-2-3 as it should be and I just don't have the time to futz with it. The box is capable of running 8GBs of RAM and it's just plain SWEET. I like it so much, I bought a second one as a redundancy server.
