The TowerRAID TR5UTP is a 5-bay hardware RAID 5 storage tower that utilizes high performance USB 3.0 and eSATA interfaces to provide over 200MB/s in performance. The included USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with widely available USB 2.0 ports, which is a convenient feature when both USB 3.0 and eSATA connections are unavailable. With built-in RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5 with hot-spare and JBOD, the TR5UTP provides hardware RAID redundancy protection against hard drive failures. A brand new RAID mode, CLONE or N-Way Mirror, is also introduced to replicate the saved data throughout each installed hard drive. The RAID engine is embedded within the enclosure and performs all RAID parity calculation to reduce CPU utilization from the host PC. RAID controller cards are unnecessary.

To satisfy the need for performance demanding applications, the unit is bundled with a 2-port PCIe 2.0 x1 eSATA controller card with SATA 6.0 Gbps (6G) support (RR622 controller card). PCIe 2.0 is capable of providing twice the bandwidth of PCIe 1.0, allowing over 200MB/s in performance. The unit is also backward compatible with PCIe 1.0 slots to provide eSATA connectivity for computers that do not have built-in eSATA ports. Designed with easy installation in mind, the TR5UT-BP allows effortless installation by simply inserting the hard drive tray (with the hard drives installed) after opening the attractive ventilating door. The TR5UTP is the ultimate RAID storage for all storage needs.

  • newegg Five-Bay Hardware RAID The SANS DIGITAL TR5UTP features five bays to support RAID 0, 1, 10, 3, 5, JBOD, clone with hot spare and JBOD, providing over 200MB/s read and 170MB/s write performance. Hardware RAID eliminates OS compatibility issues and reduces the load of the server.
  • newegg USB 3.0 Support In addition to eSATA port, the SANS DIGITAL TR5UTP also equips the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port to provide lightning fast data transfer speed of up to 5Gbps. eSATA controller card (Highpoint R622) with SATA 6Gbps support is also bundled.
  • newegg N-way Mirror Mode The SANS DIGITAL TR5UTP provides an N-Way Mirror mode to help you instantly copy data from one hard drive to several hard drives at the same time.
  • newegg Hard Disk Management The SANS DIGITAL TR5UTP automatically detects and rebuilds the insertion and removal of disks.

5 out of 5 eggsBrilliant!

Pros: I've relied on these Sans Digital BYO RAID boxes for a few years now, and haven't had any issues with any of them. This particular one is hooked up as the file server to a small renderfarm, so it gets used and abused nearly 24/7.

- Fast. I measure 230 MB/s; I can never get my single disks to go over 70-90MB/s
- Doesn't choke under simultaneous read/write access like single drives do. I can generally get up to 6 simultaneous read/writes going at once without a noticeable slowdown (since the bottleneck usually lies in CPU/network/etc.)
- It and others have always been stable, even under heavy use. Haven't yet lost a drive or corrupted a file yet.
- Plug and play install on Mac Pro (including the Rocket card). Card supports SATA hot plugging without any configuration, too!

Cons: Definitely the loudest piece of equipment in the room, but not overpowering. It's more comforting that the drives are being kept cool.

5 out of 5 eggsIts early, but so far its a great product.

Pros: I'll followup with this review once I've had more time with it, but I wanted to give a counter opinion to the negative reviews posted here so far. I just set it up today after filling it with 5 Western Digital Caviar Black 1.5TB Drives. I'm using it in hardware raid5 mode with the included 6Gb eSata card, connected to a hackintosh build around a GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard and intel i7920 processor. Its going to be my new media raid, and initial testing looks very strong. Testing with both XBench and AJA System Test show over 220MB/read performance in Raid5 as promised. Impressive stuff. The build quality of the unit is great, and noise levels although present, really could be a lot worse.

Cons: Instructions could use a touch of help in simple ways. Mostly I wanted an order of operations for set up on a mac: They give great instructions on how to install the drives in the chassis, then how to format the raid depending on what raid mode you're going with, but the next step I had to call in and ask about. Despite their being instructions on using mac disk utility, its not clear when in the process you do so, and if it supports all raid modes. I wasn't sure how snow leopard would see the array once plugged in, and didn't know if the included raid utility software was required to format the Raid 5 correctly. But, I called the included tech support number that comes in the package and immediately got thru to a human who was incredibly helpful. Tech support they way you wished it worked. It ends up that its a very easy process that has you up and running within minutes. Little more work and organization on the instruction set will be time well spent.

Other Thoughts: This is just the beginning, but others seem to have had big troubles right out of the gate. My experience so far has been awesome. To have 6 terabytes of fast raid 5 storage for under a grand... thats hard to beat. Now hears hopin she holds up over the long term. I'll report back with another review if I hit any issues.

5 out of 5 eggsBum Rap

Pros: Simple, fast setup. Great design and construction. 120 mm fan for drives, 40mm for PS. Works as advertised.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is my 2nd Sans Digital tower. The 1st (TR4UTP) has worked great. Sustained NovaBack transfer speeds are 125Mb/s for eSata (haven't tried the RR622 card yet), and 115Mb/s for the USB3; with a AMD 955/4Gb/ASRock 870 config. I'll take another one!

1 out of 5 eggsOn its way back to newegg

Pros: fast
not cheap looking-designed well

Cons: worked great for about 2 hours

Other Thoughts: seems like the sata controller in the unit (not the card for the pc) was very unstable. would drop connection during copy and wouldnt work until power cycled. I am having it replaced, the next one will be a refund if it fails...

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our products.

Drop connection can be caused by bad connection from the cable to the computer eSATA port. Please double check the eSATA cable, as well as the eSATA port of the computer/motherboard. We recommend to use the bundled controller card to eliminate the compatibility issues between the eSATA port of the computer. Using USB to test can also help to identity the problem on the unit or the eSATA connection of the computer.

If you still have problem for the unit, please feel free to contact us. Contact us at 1-800-980-1988 or e-mail us at and we will be able to identity it and resolve your issues.

1 out of 5 eggsSo far, a nightmare...

Pros: 5 bay with USB 3.0 and 6GB eSATA

Cons: Just about everything else

Other Thoughts: So far, this has been a pain. The RocketRaid 622 card that came with the unit is beyond defective, and any drivers that Hight Point ship won't work with the card. The unit in less than a week now has 2 dead bays. Time to ship it back.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

The unit come with a non-RAID version of the 622 driver. There are no known problem with the drivers installation. The drivers supported in Windows, MAC and Linux. Without specific detail of your problem, we do not know how to resolve your issues.

Please provide us detail information for your problem. Contact us at 1-800-980-1988 or e-mail us at and we will be able to identity it and resolve your issues.
