4 out of 5 eggsGood unit

Pros: * Great value, supports 6G
* Doesn't look bad
* Reasonable cooling/airflow
* Comes with 8088 SAS cable
* With a bit of care, you can hot swap the drives

Cons: * Changing drives is a little work, but totally doable. The inconvenience of the low-tech "tray" approach is overblown.
* A slightly longer cable woulda been nice

Other Thoughts: The cons are very minor. This is a budget box, and the bang for buck is very high; it does all the basic functions well.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent backplane

Pros: Price, case finish.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: The case doesn't really feel that bad. It does what is supposed to do.

3 out of 5 eggsIn response to last reviewer...

Pros: Inexpensive, SFF-8088 connection, 6G supported

Cons: pay for what you get(cheap feel)
no hot-swap trays, though there is a reason

Other Thoughts: I only have the eSATA version of this enclosure, but they look virtually identical, physically and mechanically - minus the external connections.
It does have a cheap feel to it. The top cover is very bothersome to remove, although you don't really need to remove it, once it's running.
Regarding the post about no trays, the drives just slide into the enclosure bare on built-in "shelves"(shown in the second pic on the product page). This has both pros and cons - PROS: no need to buy extra trays for replacement drives. Just pull out old drive and pop in the new drive. Cons: Can be pretty difficult to pull out any of the top 3 drives, since room to get a grip on the drive is minimal, and with no tray handle to help. This can get worrisome when the device is live. It requires one hand holding the enclosure down and some force to pull the drive out. It's almost impossible to remove the top drive without powering down the unit.
My only suggestion to Sans Digital is provide some tool that could reach behind the drive to help pull it out. I was thinking of using a spare expansion slot cover, but there is circuitry behind the drives.
If you want an inexpensive 4-bay SAS enclosure, this would be one to get. If you want the perks of drive trays and enterprise-quality build, you should be looking at a rackmount system.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

It is correct that the unit is design without using tray. At the same time, we have tray models that for 1U 4 bay rackmount (as reviewer correctly indicated) as well as 8 bay tray models.

We do expect user to open up the cover to remove trays, as the unit is design to use thumbscrew to secure the drives on the side. The drives can easy remove by pushing it from behind, instead of removing from the front.

2 out of 5 eggsNice cabinet NO TRAYS!

Pros: None

Cons: Bare cabinet, no drive trays provided, makes no sense! Trays are $30 a piece if you can find them. What good is an enclosure with no trays?

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

TR4X+B does not requires to use tray. The drives is directly insert to the enclosure without any tray modules. There are also no trays for purchases with this model. Please contact our technical support for installation instructions.

At the same time, all of our models that requires trays are bundled with the unit. Unless the extra trays are needed, there are no need for additional purchases.

3 out of 5 eggsWorks, but cheap...

Pros: The only 4-drive SAS enclosure that I could find. all others seem to want to take a very fast array, and squeeze it through a cheapo embedded RAID controller and then USB / eSATA / Ethernet.

Does what it says on the label, BUT...

Cons: ...No 6Gbit SAS! My drives (Two Hitachi and two WD) sporadically link up at either 3Gb or 6Gb, depending on how they're feeling that day. Kind of a disappointment, how much more could a good backplane have possibly cost?

Also, the whole thing feels a bit cheap, and is flagrantly non-hotswap. I'd have been willing to pay double for an enclosure with proper sleds, and it would have been a bit thinner for it as well.

Other Thoughts: It would have been nice to have had the power switch on the front.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing our product.

The unit does support 6G interface. If it sometimes link up as 3G and sometimes it link up as 6G, we suggest to check with either the controller firmware or the hard drives. Please also make sure to use the cables that come with the unit. The backpanes itself does not transmit signal to tell the hard drives to run at 3G or 6G. It is all detected by the negotiation between drives and the controllers.

If you still encounter issues, please call 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at tech@sansdigital or visit our online forum.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat little item

Pros: Easy, nice looking, drop in replacement.
Everything was included.

Cons: Feels like a $250 box, not a $1000 box.
Difficult to figure out model number to get correct one.
Difficult to figure out what you will get.

Other Thoughts: The TR4X+B is set up on an HP 2003 SBS server with a P411 SAS card running HP ACU (Array Configuration Utility). I put in 4 WD Green 1.5TB, and set up 2 singles and one RAID pair. I use a 6m SAS cable. No special tools or software is required (or provided). This box replaced an HP MSA60, and was basically a drop in replacement. This item is much better suited to a home office – being quiet and lower power. However, there is a 4” fan for those hot days so I have no troubles with temperature. The only difference is that the box itself does not show up as a separate item in ACU. The box has been flawless for the past month or so, and was easy to set up. In the packing box you get a setup sheet, the unit, screws, a power cord, and a 3’ miniSAS (SFF-8088) cable. The box looks nice – no really nice, but feels a little light and tinny. The cover can be fussy to replace, but it’s not like you do it much.

Get the “+” model - not the older one without the "+". The "B" means black.
