5 out of 5 eggsGood Tower on Mac

Pros: I needed a 4-bay USB 3 JBOD to connect to my CalDigit card on my Mac Pro 5,1. I very hesitantly purchased this based on the reviews below. However, after 4 weeks of use, it is running smoothly, I haven't had any issues with drives burning out or data being written to the wrong drive causing corruption. If this changes, I'll change the review.

Cons: n/a

1 out of 5 eggsWorks without issue in windows, linux is spotty so far

Pros: I need a simple offsite backup enclosure to leave at my buddies house, nothing fancy and this seems to fit the bill. Good solid enclosure, drives mount up fine in windows and all seems well there. I do linux it for a living so what I really want is a simple usb enclosure that makes that drives show up individually so I can mdadm them together and rsync and forget about it. This device SHOULD meet that criteria.

Cons: I can only get one drive to actually work in linux. All 4 drives will show up under /dev/sd[h,i,j,k] but only one shows having a partition. Any ONE drive in any ONE slot works fine. Once I down everything and rearrange drive order and whatnot, still only ONE drive works in enclosure. Swapping usb ports/hubs doesn't matter.

Other Thoughts: I just contacted SANS Digital support with a bunch of info, output of dmesg/lspci -v/lsusb -v and various testing commands I tried. If they fix my problem they have my respect and I will be buying one more. I will also change my rating should this get resolved. =)

I'm running Debian 7 amd64/3.2.0-4

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsUPDATE to previous review.

Pros: Read "other thoughts"

Cons: Read "other thoughts"

Other Thoughts: *Be advised* I was the person who wrote a review titled "1 week and absolutely no issues (Mac user)"

Well, now fast forwarding 1 month I have had a hard drive crash on me that I owned for 2.5 years and always worked perfectly. From one moment to the next all my data was gone and I could not retrieve it with any software. I cannot put 100% blame on this enclosure, but nothing else has changed except for that and now this drive has crashed. Given the poor reviews this enclosure had and my bad experience I would recommend looking elsewhere.

A crashed hard drive is sometimes priceless, don't let this cheap enclosure ruin it.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing Sans Digital products.

Sorry to hear about the hard drive, and we totally understand that hard drive always contain valuable things inside and so having a good backup of the data is always a good idea. About the issue, is the drive completely dead or just the data is gone? It's weird since to be honest we have never heard of a simple JBOD storage enclosure can delete the data on a hard drive since it just does not have the ability to do it. It's a JBOD unit and it does not have RAID ability. It's just an interface between the drives and the computer. It's different from other RAID unit that have the ability to initialize the data on the drives. Also, are the other hard drives ok on the same enclosure? Usually if it's just the file system is gone data recovery software could be applied to help recovering them, have you tried that?

If you have problem on the unit, please contact us by calling 1-800-980-1988 for technical support and our engineer will try to resolve it over the phone. You can also contact us at for email support.

5 out of 5 eggs1 week and absolutely no issues (Mac user)

Pros: Aesthetically pleasing, easy to install, quiet, does what it's supposed to.

Cons: Not a con really, but when I place my computer on sleep mode there is no change to the lights on the enclosure. I would like it to show that it went to sleep, but who cares. The drives go to sleep because you hear them spin down.

Other Thoughts: There are countless bad reviews all over the web from Mac users on this enclosure and I have no idea why. I have a 27" iMac (late 2012) running version 10.8.4 and it's been working absolutely fine this week I've had it.

I was looking for an enclosure with simple JBOD technology that would match my Mac also. This enclosure is affordable, looks great, and does what it's supposed to.

If I have anything negative to report I will update.

1 out of 5 eggsWaiting for SATA III drive suppot

Pros: Looks like good unit, but as all USB 3.0 enclosures I have seen so far, this does not support SATA III 6GB/s drives!!! so if only supports 3GB/s input, how can output be anywhere near 5GB/s instead of less than 3GB/s?

Cons: No SATA III support. No eSATA 6GB/s support. USB 3.0 not fully supported.... 3GB/s MAX!!!

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing Sans Digital product.

The unit overall perform is about 200MB/s ~300MB/s. It is not due to 3GB/s, rather, it is the USB 3.0 implementation.

If you are looking for higher performance storage device, we recommend TR4X+, which will provide true 6Gb/s per harddrives, totaling 24Gb/s per ports.

Please contact feel free to contact our technical support at or 1-800-980-1988 to provide you the solution to meet your requirements.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Tower

Pros: These are great towers. Whether you want to RAID it or just use it to access 4 drives for storage I recommend these highly. I bought this same tower about 6 years ago, with the only differance being mine was USB 2.0 only. I am still using the tower and the only thing that has changed over the years is the size of the drives it has housed.

I started with 4 80 Gb drives and now it houses 4 2 Tb drives which is the largest mine holds. I use it for back up storage in JBOD mode mostly but have used the RAID capabilities with no problems at all. I am getting ready to purchase a new eSATA version since my new computer supports eSATA.

The original 80mm cooling fan is still working after 6 years of running almost 24/7. Like any computer its a dust magnet and opening the unit and bowing the dust out is pretty much the only maintenance I ever performed. I do this every 6 months since my house is dusty.

Cons: The only issue I have is that in Vista when you set your computer to sleep the auto power switch does not shut the tower off. It only shuts the tower off when you shut down completely. Not sure this is a con but it would be nice if it shut down in sleep mode. Not a con but you want to be real careful and deliberate when changing the 2 dip switches on the back. 1 is the auto power and 1 is the RAID switch. If you have 4 drives full of data and flip the RAID switch accidently you will lose all your data. There is no warning stating that all data will be lost do you want to continue so take care if you are messing with these.

Other Thoughts: I have seen several people who claim "HIGH" tech knowledge slamming these towers with 1 egg reviews because their computers won't boot with the tower plugged in to their USB ports. These people are blaiming the manufacturer for their own computer illiteracy. My tower is plugged in and my computer boots up just fine because I don't have "Boot from USB device" enabled in my BIOS. If your box won't boot after plugging this tower in, enter BIOS and disable this function. If after doing this you still have issues contact the manufacturer and 9 times out of 10 they can help you solve your problem b4 you start leaving lousy reviews.
