1 out of 5 eggsNothing but problems crashes constantly

Pros: Clean design is all that this unit has going for it, great paper weight

Cons: I never was able to get this unit working, I have attempted to get this unit going 5 different time and failed, I have tried different controllers, cables and drives but drives keep dropping "very unstable", I have tried WD Red and WD Enterprise Seagate NAS drives all with the same results, it was just a waste of time and money, the unit is going back on the floor to be my $350 foot rest

Other Thoughts: If you are looking at this unit take my advise run far far far away from this unit unless you want to waste your money and time.

I know what I am doing as well, I have 22 Years IT/Networking experience and Tech support was a joke

1 out of 5 eggsCrashes constantly

Pros: none

Cons: Found out after purchasing from manufacturer that I could only use "Enterprise Level" hard drives in order for it not to crash constantly. I guess I'll never know. I am dumping it along with the controller and buying a raid box from another manufacturer that doesn't have port doubling which appears to be the root of the problem.

4 out of 5 eggsIts pretty good

Pros: I purchased this because I need a FAST DAS array that I can expand on later. It is very quick. I have all spinning disks in here and I have no complaints about performance during use of the box. It is easy to use and fairly easy to install.

Cons: The boot bios takes forever. However, if you hit the END key as it is booting it will skip it and windows will initialize it. Something weird happened and now my default boot order on my Asus X99-E WS board does not work correctly since I have installed the raid card. I have to hit F8 every time I boot it and select my boot devices. I have tried changing the boot sequence multiple times but it does not correct the issue.

My other gripe is that the trays are not tooless designed. I hate that I have to use a screw driver to attach a drive to the tray.

Other Thoughts: My build:
5960X CPU
32Gb DDR4
Windows 8.1

2 out of 5 eggsNice concept, good price but too flakey

Pros: Great idea at a great price. When it works it works incredibly well

Cons: RR642L Card seems to reset on the primary channel intermittently during access or predictably during drive optimization.

I have this setup connected to a Windows Server 2012 box with 8 4TB drives as one large Raid 5 Array. As stated above when it works it works great as I use it for Media serving. Then sometimes the RR642L Card seems to have an issue and will reset the primary channel taking the array offline briefly and for a unknown and not logged(in the OS) reason.

All Drives are fine so this isn't a hard disk issue per say and it will run flawlessly for months with no changes then act up.

This seems to me to be an issue with the driver from Highpoint but from what I have seen they don't seem motivated to update their driver software or Bios.

1 out of 5 eggsStay FAR away from HighPoint RAID controller with this unit

Pros: Easy to use hot swap-able modules for HDD's. Nice design.

Cons: I bought this unit back in December and have had nothing but problems with the HIghPoint controller. I have had constant BSOD's with this on WHS 2011 64bit and have tried working with HighPoint on the problem. After initially working with me and giving me various drivers to try then just recently came back with this response.

Dear customer in our compatibility list for the RocketRAID 6xxL series controller we note that Enterprise HDD are needed for RAID arrays.

The time out error in Windows Event log originates from using desktop HDD in a RAID 5 application.

All RAID 5, 6 application on the RocketRAID series controller require using RAID Edition or enterprise classified HDD's. Any problems that occur when using desktop HDD's in a RAID application HighPoint is not responsible for nor can we provide a suggestion or any fixes.

Unfortunately there is nothing we can do for you in this case.

HighPoint Support Team
Now the URL they provided has no mention of RAID 5 or Enterprise HDD drives being a requirement to use RAID 5 nor is there any documentation on their site (or on NewEgg or on SansDigital) that states you will get BSOD's on a regular basis unless you fork out >2X more $ for an enterprise class HDD.

This is unacceptable after purchasing 8 3TB HDD's on NewEgg to have a HighPoint come back later to say that BSOD's should be expected with their card when using RAID 5 and not having enterprise class HDD's.

Stay AWAY from HighPoint. SansDigital should find a different card to bundle.

2 out of 5 eggsSo far nothing but problems

Pros: Inexpensive and case is well built. Drives are well ventilated. When it works - it is fast. Glad I got while it was on sale, plus a coupon and with free shipping.

Set-up is easy - just wish the trays were screw-less.

Cons: Fan is VERY noisy -- Replaced it with a Noctua.

I've had to rebuild the raid from scratch 3 times (it is currently rebuilding from the 3rd crash. After it fails - it no longer recognizes that many of the drives exist -- until you play musical slots with them. The error log indicates that ALL devices in the Array failed - yet none of them have really failed.

When this happens - Windows 7 Pro 64 bit fails to load on reboot unless I turn-off or unplug the enclosure.

I am continually getting BSOD on the rr640L.sys driver. Installed it from the CD and downloaded it and installed it from the website - each time uninstalling the card and related software - with the same results. (0x000000D1). Have even gotten this error on reboots.

CLEARLY a driver issue with the card.

Very Frustrating and time consuming - rebuilding the raid takes almost 2 days (8 3TB drives).

Unfortunately I am past my return period - otherwise it would be going back.

From the reviews on other SANS DIGITAL products -- seems like the controller card is the issue - and many have had success replacing it. Hate to have to spend even more on this - guess what I saved from the sale price, coupon and free shipping will have to be spent replacing the controller card.

PS - I even went so far as to exchange all of my hard drives after the second crash -- and it still crashed with the new ones.

Other Thoughts: Bottom line -- until SANS DIGITAL / HighPoint Technologies develop a working driver and / or update the BIOS (can't believe the BIOS has never been updated (still on v1.0) this is not for the faint of heart.

Guess I will try to replace the esata controller card and see if that makes a difference.

5 out of 5 eggs8 bay enclosure

Pros: Clean nice design. Sturdy well built enclosure.
6GB/s Raid Card

Cons: reliability concern. rebuilded two times my raid in less than a month.

Other Thoughts: This is second enclosure i purchased. I own TR8M+B for couple years with no problems running 8x2TB (~13,5TB formatted) in raid 5 using 622 controller had one drive failed and rebuilded arey after swap for about 28 hours. I decide to go with this one this time to get usage of 6gb/s advertising with rocked raid 642 card running 8x4TB seagates in raid 5 (~25.5TB formatted).
I have put successfully in one computer both raid cards. During boot screen i can see only 640L card do the check but 622 do check when Windows is loading. the isue i had was to be access web GUI on both card. raid manager was loading only one card. Sins according to instructions both card using same localhost port.
I started (hptsvrman.exe) to see correct ports on both card an was able to get to web GUI on second controller. difference I see is that led lights are just "green" and don't go "orange" like on older enclosure when active, and also it took like 52 hours to initialise and had alarm going on couple times ended up disable it. Two cables are connected go raid card. It rebuild itself after power outage last week took another 48 hours. hope it will not have any issues in long run still keep copy of all my data on older enclosure.
Fan is blue led but i don't really care sins it is on the back of the unit.
Noise is average not louder than my main machine.

Does someone can tell me if I can use internal two Sata ports on the card when I enclosure is attached?

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect RAID storage solution!

Pros: LOTS of storage (up to eight 4T drives = total 32T) cheap. Many RAID options. Fast transfer speeds . . . comes with top line RAID controller card. Easy setup. GREAT customer service (they helped me through my lack of RAID experience).

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I love it . . . there is nothing even close to this performance and capacity available at this price point.

2 out of 5 eggsNot a Great Experience

Pros: Drives mount easily. Nice looking enclosure.

Cons: Configured two RAID 5 arrays with the included card. Windows 7 64 bit would see the 4.5TB arrays but only configure 2TB for use. Went back and re-configured as RAID 1 (two drives a piece). Works that way. No real tech support available.

Price went down $30 right after I ordered. Should have some price guarantee (30 days).

Other Thoughts: The RAID card get really bad reviews on the Internet. Should have done a little more homework.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for purchasing Sans Digital products.

About your poblem - that the RAID can be configured properly and with 4.5TB shown correctly on Windows, but you can only use 2TB out of it, did you see two partitions (one smaller with about 2TB size, another one with the remaining size) in "Disk management" when you are about to format it? If so, this is nomal since you need to convert the disk in "GPT" partition scheme in order to combine them into one big drive in order to utilize the whole capacity.

About the tech support, we have serached through our whole email database for all of our tech engineers as well as our phone logs but could not really find a case similar to the issue you described (especially since this is one of our newer products so there's just one or two tech support inquiries so far only). We gurantee replying customers within 24 hours on both email and phone support, and the next monday by 5pm PST when the email came in after the previous Friday 5pm PST.

For more detail support, you can contact us at for email suppor or 1-800-980-1988 for phone support.
