5 out of 5 eggsGood for maximizing your SSD throughput with an older motherboard

Pros: I needed a SATA III adapter for my old ASUS P6T Deluxe (V1) that could keep up with my SSD (an aging, though still fairly fast Crucial Performance Pro). First I tried an SI-PEX40064 and while that worked better than the inbuilt controller, it was limited to about 400MB/sec. This one, however, has no such issue and works great. ATTO resulted in nearly 500MB/sec readings for both read and write, which is about as good can be expected.

Cons: A minor complaint. The included SATA cables are not the locking type.

Pros: Easy install using helpfull direction posted by helpfull reviewer here. My PC is faster now. Just using on single hard drive.

Cons: Price could be less.

Other Thoughts: I have it ready if I want to put in a SSD.

5 out of 5 eggsNo issues after a year

Pros: Works as advertised. No issues on setup or adding drives.

Cons: None experienced so far

Other Thoughts: I added it to a win 8 system without issue, running 4tb drives in all ports joined via Storage Spaces (no redundancy). Updated system to 8.1 and 8.1 update w/o incident. Never have had even a hiccup to date.

5 out of 5 eggsSATA III Card

Pros: Effortless plug and play
Exactly as described

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Got this because my cheap-o HP desktop came with only 2 SATA ports; just enough for HD and DVD/RW drive.
I did notneed/ use/try the RAID features.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as it should

Pros: This is a really nice controller for the price. I have been using it for over a month now with zero issues.

It reaches advertised speeds. I have this setup with 4, 4TB Western Digital RED Drives. While I purchased this primarily for a backup RAID array, I also wanted to play when I first got it.....

I setup all 4 drives in a RAID 0 array and RAN it through it's paces with atto. With Default ATTO setting I was hitting 500MB write and 550MB read. Consider these drives hit about 125~150MB in stand alone config on a SATA III port, this is almost perfect scaling....

But obviously we don't have backups in RAID 0. So, once I was done playing I setup all 4 drives in a 1+0 array (some people call it RAID 10).

I Ran ATTO again, I was getting right 250MB read and write... Again, near perfect scaling and better than expected write performance.

Cons: No cons.

Other Thoughts: I haven't played with the HyperDuo.

I have this plugged into a PCI express x4 (4 lane) 2.0 slot. Even though the card only uses 2 PCIe lanes, it requires a x4 slot as no motherboards have a x2 PCIe slot.

If you're thinking about RAID 0 for SSD's, forget it. this controller doesn't have enough bandwidth and would saturate the card. This card has around 600MB max bandwidth and a modern SSD on A SATA III controller will yield around 500MB read/write.... 4 SSD's in ARID 0 would be a major waste....

Overall, this is a fantastic card at this price point. Luckiliy, drives are stable, non-drop from the array and the controller always shows up in the boot up screen and in the windows environment...

As always, newegg shipped fast and secure!

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate to Earlier Review

Pros: Enables SATA III SSDs to achieve or approach their maximum speed.

Has 4 SATA ports.

Connection requirements now more clearly defined in "Specifications" tab on this page.

Cons: Installation instructions for use with a boot drive are still vague.

SATA connector sockets are not very sturdy so be sure to plug and unplug SATA cables carefully.

Other Thoughts: Previously i complained that "Connection requirements are unclear in Newegg product info." Glad to see they have now corrected that.

If you want to connect your Windows (or other operating system) boot drive to this card, please do the following to avoid problems:
1. Install the card in PCI-e x4 slot (or x8 or x16). DO NOT ATTACH YOUR BOOT DRIVE YET.
2. Boot up and install drivers for the card.
3. Restart the computer and let it boot up to Windows again to complete the driver install.
4. Shut down completely. Now connect your Windows boot drive to the card.
5. Power on the computer and go immediately into the system BIOS setup screen. In the Boot section of the BIOS select this card with your attached boot drive as the First Boot Device. If there are several hard drives you may need to move this one to the 1st position in the list of hard drives.
6. Save and Exit from the BIOS. Computer should now boot up to Windows and provide fast performance.

Some users ran into problems because they connected their boot drive to the card before the card had drivers installed. This produced boot error messages and in some cases the Master Boot Record was corrupted so that, even after installing drivers, they still couldn't boot up and felt as though this add-on card had hosed their system. It just goes to show that it pays to do your homework before plunging into any upgrade!

5 out of 5 eggsWorks great in Hyperduo mode

Pros: Performance with the marvell controller in Hyperduo mode is great. I have this and a SanDisk ReadyCache in another computer and I am much happier with the performance of of this card (and you can't beat the price!) The ready cache is software driven and the software is kinda buggy, the SSD caching for Hyperduo mode is at a hardware level and the performance definitely reflects that. I am only using the Hyperduo function and though I have never used a dedicated SSD drive, my boot times and load times of most everything I do have dramatically increased. I didn't have to reload windows either, I installed the card first before connecting drives and installed all the drivers then shutdown and connected drives. I had to configure BIOS to boot to the alternate controller after I configured the SSD and HDD in hyper duo mode it boot to windows fine, after a few reboots and few loads of common programs the system was performing MUCH quicker than before. only common accessed data is placed on the cache drive so there is no "waste" of your limited SSD space There is a couple second increase in time to load the controller at boot before the windows logo appears but the speedier load time for windows more than makes up for it.

Cons: GUI could be a little better for both the boot config as well as the web interface in windows. I am only using the card for the Hyperduo function not RAID

Other Thoughts: Intel's research found that a 64gb drive was max for caching, I used a 128 and provisioned it at 60% to extend the life of the SSD. I will be purchasing an additional card for the readycache drive and ditching the ready cache software.

5 out of 5 eggsOSX

Pros: works just like that with OSX 10.9 Bios screen time display is short.

Cons: NA

Other Thoughts: Mavericks OSX supports Marvell 88SE9230 AHCI only. Raid was mentioned not supported only in WINDOWS. AHCI OSX is very fast and stable. "About this mac " shows 8 Marvell 88SE9230 in the serial ATA device Tree (two ports used)

2 out of 5 eggsAlmost a good buy

Pros: Price, Plug and play, Easy to Configure, Windows 8 Compatible, good read rates and reliable writing.

Cons: Failure rate, hardware reliability, unknown issues causing card disconnects from the system.

Other Thoughts: Purchased on 10/21/2013 and installed quickly after.
Installation was easy and the configuration was standard as far as raid cards go.
Eaverything was good for a month and I started getting random reboots/crashes, but couldn't figure out why.
Finally realized the this raid car was randomly disconnecting.
The card will simply drop from device manager and cannot be added back to the system without a reboot. This happens at various times and I cannot determine a cause or consistency. I use the raid car for my Data drives and not for the OS. This scenario allows for the raid to disconnect without effecting the current running state (if no data is being accessed).
It is puzzling and disappointing. Since I cannot determine the cause I am more inclined to just return the device and purchase a card from a more reliable manufacturer. Unfortunately, this happened a month after install and I am not looking forward to reconfiguring my raid so soon.

3 out of 5 eggsWatch out for multiple cards

Pros: Works if only one used

Cons: Insidious errors if more than one card installed

Other Thoughts: Don't know if this applies to Windows, but in Linux (in my case, Ubuntu Server specifically) when multiples of this card are installed on the same system, they accumulate errors and eventually fail under load. Syba just says too bad, so sad. ಠ_ಠ

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

The Marvell chipset was made with no full Linux support. The controller does use Linux's AHCI driver, however that is all that is currently supported by Marvell.

Thank you for leaving us your valuable feedback.
