5 out of 5 eggsPerfect cable to feed my RAID Expander

Pros: This was just the cable I needed. It is very good quality at a very reasonable price.

Cons: I have been using this cable for several months now, with no problems with connections, speed, or errors.

Other Thoughts: I have an Asus motherboard with a PIKE2008 RAID module (essentially a rebranded LSI 9211-8i in a customer form factor). The addition of the PIKE module activates 8 SATA type sockets on the motherboard (sata/sas compatible, dubbed PSAS). The PIKE2008 card supports up to 256 devices, but if each of the plugs is cabled directly to a SATA hard drive, 8 devices is the most that can be connected. The PIKE2008 module does not have any external connectors to attach to an expander/backplane (unlike the traditional PCI card from LSI). Keep in mind the PIKE version was fraction of the cost of the traditional PCI card.

Using one of these NORCO reverse breakout cables, I was able to create a link between my PIKE2008 RAID module and Intel RAID Expander Board RES2SV240 (plugging the cable into 4 of the PSAS motherboard plugs and into one of the 6 SFF-8087 on the expander). This allows me to use forward breakout cables in the other 5 SFF-8087 port on the expander to attach 20 sata devices + 4 devices using the other 4 PSAS ports on the motherboard. (Or using 2 of these cables I can create 2 lanes to the expander for higher speed access to 16 forward broken out devices).

I know my review has gone far beyond the quality of the cable itself, but I wanted to share how I was making use of this cable in case other shoppers found themselves in a similar situation and wondering if this cable would do the job. A reverse breakout cable like this meets the needs of a very specific situation that is not always easily understood, so I hope this can be helpful.

2 out of 5 eggsOkay quality

Pros: Works great, SATA ports to Norco RPC 4220 backplane....

Cons: 3rd SATA port cable causes massive number of read error, and just recently gave out. And 4th SATA port cable has recently become unstable, to the point that it is likely the cause of the BSODs on my system (sudden device disconnect)

Naturally, right outside of the warranty period....

Other Thoughts: Between the bad cable, and the failed slot on one of the backplanes in my Norco RPC-4220..... I'm not sure I feel confident in their brand.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine.

Pros: I had purchased one of these years ago. I have a motherboard with 6 SATA 6Gb/s ports.... I mirror my OS drives and put this cable on the other four to drive a multilane row of disk drives in my server. (The rest are handled by a SAS expander and SAS Controller)

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsJust the right length

Pros: Just long enough to reach from backplane to main board headers.

Cons: None really. The cables fan out RIGHT at the SFF-8087 connector. The "made in china" label is keeping the bundle together a bit in the photos.

Other Thoughts: The Norco case is made for a very large main board. I was worried the sata ends would not reach. There is just enough room to bend the cables down out of the way, but not enough run them along the bottom of the case.

3 out of 5 eggsSFF8087-4S

Pros: New egg as always was outstanding.

Cons: Did not work. Sometimes you just get bad eggs

Other Thoughts: Tested out both ports on raid card and could not get them to see hard drives. Used my spare SFF in either port and saw all hard drives...

5 out of 5 eggsWork's fine.

Pros: I have 6 Norco cases and use a number of these and never had a problem.

Cons: Doesn't come in purple.

Other Thoughts: I don't understand how someone can give this 1 star
because they didn't research the type of cable needed
for thair application (forward or reverse). When used to aggregate 4 SATA ports into one SFf-8087 connector
so that discrete ports can be plugged into a backplane this is tho cable to get. Use a forward cable for Norco RPC-4020 and reverse for 4220 or 4224.

1 out of 5 eggsWarning: Do not buy for connection to SFF-8087 raid controllers

Pros: Cheapest on newegg

Cons: I learned after the fact that the description of "REVERSE" breakout is critical. It seems these are NOT reversible.

ONLY purchase this with a Norco-like case that has a SFF-8087 backplane and you have SATA connections on your controller.

Without knowing this, mine didn't work at all. I had to read reviews on another site to learn this only after it didn't w

5 out of 5 eggsNo problems

Pros: Cable works great with Norco RPC-1204.

Cons: Had to bend cable to fit into the RPC-1204, but didn't seem to cause any problems.

5 out of 5 eggsThink before you purchase

Pros: Great cable and simply works.

Cons: Lack of metal clips on SATA ends. Not that big of a con since I won't be messing around inside of the case too often but I prefer SATA cables to have metal clips. Strange thing is that the mini-SAS side has a metal clip so why not do both sides?

Other Thoughts: Please think before you purchase your items. This is a reverse breakout cable. Like others have mentioned this goes from your motherboard's SATA connections to your SAS back-plate.
