Eight-Bay Thunderbolt RAID TOWER

Introducing the Areca ARC-8050 - using the latest Thunderbolt technology, a revolutionary high-speed, dual protocol I/O technology designed for performance, simplicity and flexibility. The new ARC-8050 lets you move data between high resolution displays and high performance data devices on a single, compact port. Using a hardware Dual Core RAID engine and 1GB DDR3 ECC default cache, the ARC-8050 delivers outstanding performance unmatched by others.

THUNDERBOLT CONNECTIVITY

A revolutionary I/O technology that supports high-performance data devices and high-resolution displays through a single, compact port. It sets new standards for speed, flexibility and simplicity. Thunderbolt gives you two channels on the same connector with 10Gbps of throughput in both directions, so you can move data to and from peripherals up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and up to 12 times faster than with Firewire 800.

areca RAID

With Thunderbolt technology, you finally have a way to get the same high performance storage to your laptop or just as likely to build a professional video setup around the latest Thunderbolt technology. If you're a video editor, imagine using a single port to connect high-performance storage and transfer your media files reaching 800MBps from just about any Thunderbolt enabled computer or laptop.

4 out of 5 eggsTB2 version now out so these are discounted

Pros: Just to note that Areca have bought the Thunderbolt 2 version of this out now, so if you think 10Gb/sec is not enough, and you need TB2 @20Gb/s (!) then you can pay $600 more for the TB2 update. And... it comes in Black. apart from that, it's identical to this.

As getting anywhere near the TB1 limit is impossible with current drives, or anything in the foreseeable future, I can't see a reason to go for TB2 except bragging rights.

Cons: Maybe, just maybe some large capacity SSD drives will come out in 3+ years that have 1gb/sec each and are affordable to ordinary mortals (dream on) - in which case a simple array might hit the TB1 buffer. I suspect that's a decade away though, plus those SSD drives will not fit regular HD trays, when they do arrive.

Other Thoughts: Get this while its on 'Sale'.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: You can set this up anyway you want. I have the top four bays as Raid 5 and the rest as independent disks that I use for footage offloading and backups.

It has run flawlessly since we purchased it.

Cons: The included literature leaves a lot to be desired.

4 out of 5 eggs90 days in - working as advertised

Pros: Massive storage, SNMP, Thunderbolt connectivity

Cons: Setup manual leaves something to be desired. I had issues running the web setup with Safari 7.0.1/Mac OS 10.9.1 as the icons turned to question marks and I could not access the submenus due to this "question mark" issue (I was able to configure with Firefox 26.0).

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic

Pros: Very well built. Uses sas or sata drives so increases the choice of enterprise drives available .very good deal from newegg with getting a free ipad with the purchase. Really fast quiet and reliable.

Cons: Setup instructions not as clear as they could be but not really a big issue

5 out of 5 eggsPro Raid setup.

Pros: Fast, powerful pro level.
I mean really *FAST.
Sets up through your browser interface.
moderate level of tech knowledge to set up, more than a beginner, but ultimately not that difficult.

Be sure you understand about going to greater than 2 Tb arrays and do not buy 'Green' drives that power down in the array, and make the controller think that a drive has broken.

Cons: Thunderbolt and *only* Thunderbolt on here.

Make no mistake - there are no other connectors, except the Ethernet jack and power point. There is no power switch.

If you are on a PC, check you have Thunderbolt. very very few motherboards do. If you don't, you can't use this.

Other Thoughts: A true pro level raid box. Sure its not running a datacenter, but this is a serious high level raid system in a self contained box.

I own 2 - the old ARC-5040 and the new ARC-8050. The new one has a faster 800mhz processor, and builds arrays a quicker, duh.

If you don't have thunderbolt on your machine, don't buy this. If in future thunderbolt is dropped, you are in trouble. no USB3, no SAS, etc. Get the (old) 5040 for all the ports you could ever want, or the current 8040 for SAS, but no thunderbolt. It seems Areca have economized on port options as these machines have 'progressed'.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding

Pros: Very well built
Quiet
Fast
Totally customizable

Cons: Requires better than average computer knowledge to setup

Other Thoughts: After trying several enclosures, this system lets Finial Cut Pro X work with over 400 hours of material so much faster. Was doubtful Thunderbolt was necessary, but the fast internals of this RAID makes it feel like a 15 TB SSD. Amazing. Amazing. Expensive.

4 out of 5 eggsJust what I was looking for..

Pros: Small package. Clean design.
Price is reasonable for what you get, both in speed (very fast) and Areca card quality.
If you have experience with other Areca cards using this interface GUI doesn't require any new learning. I find it simple to use and quick to configure.
Only 6 hours to format as RAID 6.
Pass through Thunderbolt.
LAN port.

I can't tell you about noise levels as it is in a server room.

As of now I'm very happy with it. You can probably get faster drives but after doing a lot of research I choose these WD's. Will see how it goes and if any worth adding to this report I'll post......

Cons: Some nit-picking cons....

1) No power switch. Controlled by the host and Thunderbolt cable.
2) Have to use sleds and mount the drives with screws.
3) Don't care for the blue color LCD. Would have been happier with simple black and white.

Other Thoughts: So far it is working great. Loaded it up with 8 WD 2TB Red drives. RAID 6. Running on a 2012 Mac Mini. Getting about 750 write and 600 read MB/s using Disk Speed Test. Partitioned into a 1TB Startup Drive and the other 11TB for installing software, 10.8.2 Server Time Machine Backups of 5 clients and other misc. work.
