As users grow in knowledge and experience with their computers, they frequently wind up with more than one system on or under the desk. Space limitations, however usually restrict the screens you can have on your desk. A KVM (Keyboard/Video/Monitor) switch allows you to control 2 or more systems from one keyboard and screen. The Dual View GCS1742 USB KVMP Switch brings dual head video functionality to IOGEAR's USB KVM switch technology.

Now two dual-display computers can be accessed and controlled via a single dual-monitor console. It also offers USB peripheral sharing capabilities such as printers, scanners and portable hard drives, as well as audio and microphone support. It can emulate a keyboard on each PC to allow your systems to boot normally without a keyboard error, and supports hot-swapping and can even be set to auto-scan to alternate superior-quality video between computers at preset intervals.

There's no need for device drivers or software interconnects – the switch plugs right in and handles things immediately. With an array of console ports and connectors to link to a wide array of systems and peripherals, the IOGEAR Dual View GCS1742 is ready to make sense of the forest of boxes under your desk!

  • newegg Support Dual-monitor Applications The IOGEAR GCS1742 KVM switch features two VGA ports for sharing two monitors between two dual-head computers. With the dual-monitor KVM switch, control two dual-head PCs via one USB keyboard, USB mouse and dual monitors.

5 out of 5 eggs2nd review (Id io t user edition)

Pros: This unit is well built and is easy to setup. Works well with my wireless mouse and keyboard. Also, it makes my two computer dual monitor setup so convenient

Cons: It is a little expensive but it does what I need it to do.

Other Thoughts: My previous review was incorrect because of id io t user (which would be me). The 1st unit I purchased may have been somewhat defective but the replacement unit was probably fine. Reading is fun and fundamental so maybe I should have engaged with the manual before returning this unit. I spoke with technical support at Iogear and was told what I was probably doing wrong, and they were correct. I apologize to Newegg for the unnecessary returns, to Iogear for the lest than stellar review and to those who read my review and deemed this item unworthy of purchasing. Again, I apologize.

2 out of 5 eggsReplaced 2 of these because of audio defect

Pros: The unit is easy to set up. Also, this unit seems to be well-built. All functions except the audio seem to work as expected.

Cons: Audio did not work on one side on two separate units. Also, I had to change the display settings a couple of times because the would change during window startup.

Other Thoughts: I hope that it's just that I have been extremely unlucky with this unit and not indicative of the quality of the item. Hopefully the third time is a charm.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for the inconvenience. To better service you and understand your set up, please feel to contact our customer support at 1-866-946-4327 or email us: Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Box

Pros: Bought 2 of these and they work as expected in an office environment doing RDP, etc. Couldn't be happier.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: Wish the DVI version of this box wasn't so pricey.

1 out of 5 eggsP.O.S.!!

Pros: Supports dual screens for both computers

Cons: Under Windows 7 regardless of the computer being viewed, the device will reset itself anywhere from 1-90 minutes. Some times after a reset some or all of the devices lockup or shut down forcing a system reboot and lose of work. On average I lose 1 hour per day due to the device resets, not including any lost labor due to forced system reboots.

Other Thoughts: As of this post New Egg does not list the supported OS by the device. IOGear support sucks. After contacting IOGear support and explaining my problem and checking 2 things the support person asked what OS I was running on, after support learned the OS they responded and I quote "We do not support that device under Windows 7, good by (click)", yes they hung up on me before I got to say anything else. After my support call with IOGear I called New Egg about returning the device but I was unable to return the device, so New Egg said they would elevate my complaint about the manufacture and put pressure on them to help me try and solve my problems, as of this post I've not heard any further communications from ether party. -2 egg for New Eggs failure to post supported OS, -3 eggs for extremely poor support from the manufacture. Do not buy if your using Windows 7.

Manufacturer Response:

Thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we apologize for your experience.
Windows 7 new feature is that it requires the EDID information more frequently where as previous Windows OS's only requested it during boot up. This has created issues of resolution resets and blank screens amongst any KVM that does not contain any video emulation; which is almost all KVM's except for IOGEAR's KVM's with DynaSync. Regarding the KVM, it should not be resetting itself as you reference; please contact us directly at with a ticket number or something we can reference regardig your call to us so we can better assist you. Once again, thank you for choosing IOGEAR and we hope to provide you with the proper quality service.

5 out of 5 eggsIOGear KVN GCS1742

Pros: 2 computers with dual monitors.

Supports a mix Mac/PC environment well.

No need for power supply as it pulls it from USB.

Solid case... professional feel and look.

I had this thing connected for over 2 years and love it.

Having a real box to switch to is better than using VMWare/Paralles.

Cons: Sometimes when switching the mouse is lost. However the fix is easy... toggle back and forth and it comes back. Might actually be the computer(s) fault?

Other Thoughts: No heat problems here... I have it fully loaded with USB and it is stone cold. I'm not using the external power supply and never have (still in box), so maybe that is why I'm not having that problem.

2 out of 5 eggsNot coming back to this model

Pros: dvi

Cons: Runs extremley hot as soon as plugged in.. I could fry a new egg on this thing.
Did'nt last a year before burnt out.. But little did I know its malfunction created major network problems in which cased made my DSL line to seem bad, 5000 calls to phone company and DSL provider went notwhere, eventually this device died and my problems re-aligned.. WIERD! Something to do with the USB ports and stuff it was sending thru to my machine I guess?

Other Thoughts: IOMEGA thinks that because it can save you from purchasing 3 extra monitors they can charge you a premium for this, not based on cost to make with modest profit. We all know we dont want 3 extra monitors just a switch lol...

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine

Pros: 1. Fast switching between computers
2. Supports current bluetooth wireless keyboards and mice
3. Options to switch just the video or video/audio/peripheral usb devices.

Cons: 1. External hard drives may not work with peripheral USB slot. Tried WD Passport drive and it was not recognized or powered up.

Other Thoughts: 1. The previous reviews were a long time ago. I'm running an Asus motherboard with the nForce chipset and everything works fine. I think IOGEAR has fixed any of the previous problems that the reviewers had with their unit. The device also has a cable that lets you perform firmware updates should the company every release a new one. This is cheaper than the similar product CS1742 by Aten. Good deal if you're looking for a KVM switch for dual monitor support.

3 out of 5 eggsDoesn't work with XBox 360

Pros: Small; tough metal case. Included cables are a good length. Power supply plug is well thought out and fits into a standard size slot on a multiple outlet or UPS. I didn't notice any video signal degradation, even at 1920x1200, unlike many cheaper KVM switches.

Cons: I took a chance; it doesn't work with the XBox 360 no matter what I tried. The keyboard based switching (using scroll lock key) was very flaky, often not working. To switch USB focus (and audio, incidently), you need to hold down buttons on the KVM for longer than I have patience. If you switch a lot, you'll quickly get frustrated. So, even if it did support the XBox 360, I'd still only be half-satisfied with it.

Other Thoughts: As it turns out, this KVM isn't the only one to have problems with the XBox 360. Hardly any seem to work with it. IOGEAR doesn't say they support it, so I certainly don't blame them. But, despite that, even when only using it with my Mac and PC, I still didn't care for it because of the problems noted above.

4 out of 5 eggsLittle Quirky

Pros: Does what it says it does.

Cons: Audio ports are flipped. Audio port for computer 1 is really the audio port for computer 2. And vice versa.

Other Thoughts: Works with my Logitec 518 Mouse and keyboards. I have a 9800 XT in one computer and 8800 GTX in the other and both work fine.

No problems with my mother boards. Other then the audio ports being wired wrong, the thing works as I expect it too.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: Works great. Extensive hotkey support, including user defined hotkeys. Firmware upgradable (you need to have a serial port on your PC, or get a USB to serial adapter cable). Comes with all the cables, including a serial cable for firmware upgrade, and a power adapter, which is generally useless unless you want to switch ports when all PCs connected are powered down (why will someone do this?)

Cons: None with the KVM, but when switching ports back and forth, the XP USB device plug/unplug sounds are really annoying.

Other Thoughts: I've used a lot of KVMs in 10 years. PS2 KVMs, USB KVMS, 2 port, 4 port, and 8 port stackable KVMs. This one is the best as far as KVM is concerned. I don't use the USB port and audio switching, so I can't comment on those aspects.
