4 out of 5 eggsPossible Solution to e-SATA Problems

Pros: Case fits Perfectly for my Samsung SSD and nice to have e-SATA and USB in same enclosure. USB works fine but e-SATA works sometime and more often drive not recognized-see other thoughts for solution that worked for both enclosures I own( purchased at different times)

Cons: e-SATA problems that others have noted.

Other Thoughts: Why rthis works for me I cannot say, but I thought I would share it anyway . Instead of the usual plug in the 5 V DC power first and connecting the e-SATA, I connected FIRST the e-SATA cable and Then connected the 5 V DC power cable. This worked for me on two units having problems that were purchased at different times and with different brand SSD's.

3 out of 5 eggsFix the eSata Cable

Pros: Excellent construction, feels like a real deal. Feels heavy and strong.

Cons: The provided eSata Cable does not work, I tried to power it with the double USB cable and didn't work either, by USB the connection is very fast.

Sadly I don't have a eSata cable around, lets hope that the eSata cable for another on of this that I order works

4 out of 5 eggsRosewill 2.5 ext SATA to USB&eSATA enc

Pros: Nice aluminum enclosure, USB and eSATA connectivity as well as ext. AC adapter

Cons: The plastic back plate seems to be flimsy though this shouldn't really be a concern unless you happen to swap HDDs out of this unit frequently.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased a few Rosewill products over the years and with much satisfaction. This enclosure has been the first dud. The unit seems to suffer from a faulty USB connection which causes the unit to frequently lose connection. I continue to consider Rosewill enclosures as viable.

3 out of 5 eggsESATA needs external power

Pros: Easy to install, it looks good, and the aluminum is a thick one-piece extrusions. Includes both ESATA and USB2.) cable.

Cons: Directions don't tell you that you need external power (not supplied) to use ESATA. Not a deal breaker, but the website or the manual should have said something about it.

Other Thoughts: Its a slick little unit. Its cheaper to build your own external drive, or use an old drive, than it is to buy complete external drive.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Unit works exactly as advertised. It is attractive and the hard drive is easily installed. The blue activity light is a nice feature. It uses two USB connectors for power so no outside power source is required.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Good value at Newegg's price. Makes a nice external backup drive. If you have a spare laptop drive, this enclosure purchase is a no brainer.

Cons: eSATA did not work. It's not user error. Other devices work with the same cable.

1 out of 5 eggsUSB only

Pros: Solid construction, easy to use, looks nice

Cons: eSATA does not recognize the driver. It is unclear from the manual or vendor website whether the drive needs external power or not. The power supply is not included and providing power from USB ports disables eSATA. Seems to work OK as a USB drive, but that's not what I was looking for.

Manufacturer Response:

5 out of 5 eggsWorks as advertised

Pros: Small, lightweight, easy installation of hard drive, all necessary cables provided, attractive case

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: For the price, it's hard to beat. I installed a 2.5" Samsung 640GB hard drive in it and use it as an external drive to back up three laptops/netbooks I have, one of which is eSATA capable while the other two are USB 2.0 only. On the eSATA laptop, I power down, insert the supplies eSATA cable AND the two USB 2.0 plugs, which the eSATA uses for power. When using on the other laptops, I can just plug in the two USB 2.0 plugs for both power and data. Works as advertised. An inexpensive but solid solution.

3 out of 5 eggsIncorrect specs on packaging

Pros: Looks sleek, well-built. I did not run into the physical issues other reviewers complained about. All the screw holes on mine lined up perfectly and everything fits snugly. The only issue I had was I had to press down the wires for the power and activity lights in order to get the drive in, but no biggie.

Cons: You need to plug in the USB power cable when using eSATA for the drive to turn on; therefore eSATA connection requires two cables. The enclosure does not support eSATAp (powered eSATA) which my laptop has a port for, which would eliminate the required USB power.

The product page here says it supports "up to 1TB", however when I first got it I noticed the retail box clearly had "Drive capacity support: 320GB" printed on it. Terrified, I had to unbox and try it out with the 1TB drive I had ready for it, all while making sure not to rip or tear anything so that they'd accept it returned.

In the end, I found out it did work with my 1TB drive, at least in eSATA mode, which is all I care about.
