1 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast switching

Cons: USB doesn't work with Ubuntu 12.04/14.04, or Red Hat 6/7.

Other Thoughts: My primary reason for purchasing this was for easy switching between multiple KVM virtual machines. Upon connecting the USB cable, I would receive "device not accepting address ##" and "unable to enumerate USB device."

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Perfectly as I see fit

Pros: USB 2.0 over the PS/2 layout
DVI over VGA
Added on Audio and Mic.
Works over Windows XP, 2008 R2, 2012 R2, 7, and 8.

Cons: DVI ports need to be spread out just a little bit.

Other Thoughts: I've been looking for some KVM switch like this for sometime at the right price. I did not regret getting this.

2 out of 5 eggsVery Picky on Motherboard/Chipset Hardware

Pros: Compact, good video quality (on digital DVI it either works or doesn't work, no fuzziness with digital), easy to use. Seems to work well on fully configured systems as long as you don't need to restart them.

Cons: As others have reported, it doesn't work with many motherboards and even certain BIOS on the same motherboard. Startup is where I encoutnered the failures I experienced.

On Zotac IONITX boards with the nVidia ION chipset, it won't boot Windows with a mouse installed (fails right before animated logo appears during boot sequence). Tried several USB mice, same problem with all. Disconnect the mouse, it boots fine (then you can connect the mouse and everything works, but that defeats the purpose of the KVM switch for us as system builders).

On shipping ION BIOS, no video at boot. Updating to new BIOS seemed to fix this (only had old BIOS on 2 systems, so not enough data to be certain on this).

StarTech tech support was unfamiliar with the problem and suggested I exchange. Newegg was great about the exchange, but replacement unit behaved exactly the same.

In short, this switch is not compatibale with a lot of the hardware you might be using.

Other Thoughts: If you are willing to chance it, buy this and see if it works with your hardware. If it does, I suspect you'll be happy with it. Otherwise, a KVM that doesn't work through a computer power cycle or doesn't support video is worthless, at least to me.

3 out of 5 eggsMediocre at best

Pros: 4 ports, DVI and USB. Audio in/out switches! Supports at least 1680x1050 resolution.

Cons: USB Hub feature is more-or-less useless, since once the USB mouse and key are connected, windows complains about the hub being out of power. Occasionally loses the mouse/key when switching or power off/on. Occasional video flicker and/or cut-offs. Occasional video artifacts. I have problems with it about 1 out of 10 times, but that's too often IMO.

When there's a problem, switching off and back to the chosen port *usually* fixes the issue.

Other Thoughts: I will be replacing it once 4 port DVI/USB KVMs are the standard, instead of the exception... And NOT with another StarTech.

5 out of 5 eggsAll good!

Pros: Well built and NOT finiky... it worked with 3 machines. Very happy! Manual switch is a PRO now... it's a very soft logic switch. To me, it's quicker and easier than the kb switching.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: If your device only supports analog DVI, be sure you have an analog cable for BOTH the device to KVM and from the KVM to monitor... All other digi devices, even with digi-only cables, should work fine!

4 out of 5 eggsExcellent Video - no hotkey switch

Pros: The box is solidly constructed, the video is excellent. I had an analog KVM before I plunged into DVI, and now I am stunned at what I had missed out on.

Overall, a very professional looking unit.

Cons: Only one gripe: On all of my previous KVMs, I could switch between computers by just hitting a specific key sequence on the keyboard. This was at a cost of about 1/3 of this KVM! Bow I have to reach over and push a button... That's why I pulled a point...

Other Thoughts: I did a lot of looking around before I settled for this box. Read many reviews, looked up many features. There was always something wrong, e.g. if I wanted all the sound options, all of the sudden a PS2 mouse and keyboard were needed. Other KVMs had trouble with the Logitech MX Revolution - my mouse! Except for the switching issue described above, this one was nearly perfect. Would have liked the surround sound, but that's not vital.

1 out of 5 eggsWill not work with Mac Mini.

Pros: Cheap compared to other 4 port dvi kvms. Solid construction.

Cons: 1. Does not pass through EDID monitor info so it will definatly not work with a Mac Mini (as told to me by their tech support, and not listed on their website or in tech specs anywhere).

2. It is very finicky about when things are plugged in and if its turned on. You might find yourself unplugging the power of this device and your computers several times trying to figure out which order suits it.

Other Thoughts: I do not recommend this as a quality KVM switch, but it will do the job for PC's as a budget switch.

5 out of 5 eggsCan't Complain

Pros: DVI Support, Easy Install

Cons: Fairly bland, it just does what it does but at least it does it well.

Other Thoughts: The fact of the matter is I don't see many options regarding KVM's that support DVI connections without an adapter. This one does and the USB/Microphone pass through is a nice touch as well. The box just works, you couldn't ask for more than that.

Also, unlike my old KVM I don't have to be on a station while it starts up to avoid a missing keyboard error. I can restart a pc and switch to another one while it boots up, very nice.

5 out of 5 eggsBack Again

Pros: Awesome

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Read the reviews. Leave it to the Apple/MAC guys to have problems and then blame the technology. Go ask Steve Jobs for help and quit blaming other companies.

This product is awesome!

1 out of 5 eggs1 computer out of 3 is bad

Pros: Worked great with my Power Mac G5 (ATI Radeon 9600).

Cons: Didn't work with either my Linux box (Intel GMA X3500) or my Macbook (Intel GMA X3100). I got no video from either of these systems most of the time. I could unplug and plug back in to get a signal 1 out of every 10 or 20 times, but I almost always got no video signal on the monitor (BenQ FP202W). I tried different ports on the KVM and several different cables.

Other Thoughts: I returned this and bought an IOGear GCS1764 instead. The IOGear works great. I'm sure this KVM works for some people, but it only worked with 1 out of 3 systems for me. The IOGear works great for all of them.
