5 out of 5 eggsSwitch that works

Pros: I have had one of there for many years, But then I tried one of the cheeper ones and it cheeped like a bird and flew and blew so I went back to what I knew and it was just as good as the original one, so it worked and I then ordered the switch button. it also works . Very good product. Thanks

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: What can I say it works like a gem. Wish it had one more usb port tho.

5 out of 5 eggs5+ years, sdtill going strong

Pros: Works perfectly.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I've had this for over 5 years. Works as perfectly today as it did when I bought it. I use it every single day, 1900x1200.

Works well with Logitech wireless keyboards.

1 out of 5 eggsNice features, horrible quality

Pros: The feature set is very nice.

Cons: These units are horribly unreliable. Mine stopped controlling video in under 6 months. Everyone I know with one had theirs either start having video issues or it just outright died in 6 months to 2 years.

Reviews on one site after another seem to confirm this.

Gefen refused to do anything for me either in or out of warranty.

Other Thoughts: If they would fix their quality control and customer service, the product is nice, but I'd be afraid to buy another and I feel severely ripped off.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine -- correction to prior review

Pros: See my prior review, which I cannot edit.

Cons: See my prior review, which I cannot edit.

Other Thoughts: I wrote an earlier review, which I criticized this KVM for dying. I found out that the problem I was having, despite appearing to be the KVM, is actually weirdness going on with one of my motherboards... which was effecting switching to another system.

This KVM is working fine. As I mentioned, it looks good and works fine. I like the blue cables that come with the unit, as it is always easy to tell which cables are going to the KVM. The DVI connectors support 1920x1200 with no artifacts.

1 out of 5 eggsDied in 2.5 years

Pros: When it worked, it worked great. Fast switching, nice build quality, looks cool.

Cons: Expensive, cables come out in the front, and it died 2.5 years after I bought it. I bought this thing, and forked over a ridiculous amount of money for it, because it appeared to be a quality unit from a quality company. A product that just dies after 2.5 years of gentle use is not a quality product. Sorry Gefen, but I will never buy one of your products again.

Other Thoughts: At the time I got it, it was the only DVI-USB-Audio switch out there that could handle 1920x1200. There are more options for consumers now. Generally they are all expensive, but there are other vendors. I would steer clear of Gefen. Some other person had their unit die on them, got it fixed by Gefen, but it never worked properly again. You've been warned.

1 out of 5 eggsBreaks within a year

Pros: Switches fast
Passes keyboard through instead of emulated (special keys work)

Cons: Breaks within a year

Other Thoughts: Within a years time the KVM started to show lines throughout the picture. This happened every once in a while and was mildly annoying. Then within a couple of months of this, it died. It wouldn't turn on anymore besides a very faint power light. Usually the red light is bright but it became very faint, something was wrong.

I sent the KVM in to be repaired by Gefen, the whole replacement process went smoothly. But once I received my repaired unit, it still wouldn't switch video. It would respond to DVI on one port but wouldn't switch to the other, there would only be a blank screen. USB wouldn't respond at all. I contacted Gefen again and they would not reply back to me. I will never buy from this company again. The product was superb until it died; really disappointing since most KVMs I find are unusable.

5 out of 5 eggsNice KVM; maybe not for everybody

Pros: Smooth, fairly fast switching between WinXP and Ubuntu systems. I use an ione M10 kybd, and after trying 3 other "mainstream" products, this was the ONLY KVM that would work reliably.

Cons: Agree with other reviewers: ALL connections should be on the back. Although I haven't had any problems, the potential need for the DVI Detective is an annoyance.

Other Thoughts: Would like to upgrade to dual monitors ... wish they made a switch for that.

3 out of 5 eggsSo-so switcher

Pros: It does allow two CPUs with one keyboard, mouse, and display.

I guess for the cost it does what it claims.

Cons: Doesn't hot switch very well at all. No problems from the PC side, but the Mac very often doesn't detect the mouse, have to unplug the USB and re-plug, then it detects.

RMA / return shipping cost is more hassle than it's worth.

Other Thoughts: I guess that's why they have USB ports for keyboard/mouse on the FRONT.

The Mac *usually* detects if switched to that input a few seconds before powering up, but not always.

The DVI "out" port should be on the back.

5 out of 5 eggsProduct Does What It Says.....

Pros: It does exactly what it says, and does it well. I have the dual link version with the IR remote, and the remote is a nice touch. I use it at 1920x1200 SL for now, you cannot even tell there is a KVM in line, it is that good. Switches between PCs like a dream when using optional DVI Detectives. Wish more of the DVI KVMs out there worked half as well as this Gefen. All of the cables you might need are included, except for the DVI cable that actually attaches to your display.

Cons: - It is not low cost
- You will likely need to purchase two Gefen DVI Detectives to store the EDID, so figure another $150 into the cost. However, once you do this, you should be able to switch between displays pretty much without issue.
- Supplied cables are only 6 feet long, so plan accordingly if you need longer length cables.
- It is cumbersome to place this on your desktop, as there are many cables and the DVI cables are thick and pretty rigid. The models with IR remote really shine in this respect, as you can place them anywhere (there is a wired remote option on some models as well).

Other Thoughts: You will get what you pay for here. I needed this for business purposes, to switch between a lab desktop and a corporate laptop, on a widescreen monitor for document composition purposes. Once you have all the necessary parts and pieces, it works, and it works well, end of story. You can then get on with what it is you need to use your computers for, instead of screwing around and coaxing some cheapo KVM to work at high resolutions.
Gefen ought to consider building a model that has two DVI Detectives built into the unit from the get go, however.

4 out of 5 eggsWorks great but has problems

Pros: This unit works great. I'm running at 1920x1200 with no noticable loss of video quality. It also comes with almost everything you need to hook up 2 computers to one monitor, keyboard, mouse and speaker set.

Cons: The cable going out to the monitor comes from the fron of the unit. This means it doesn't fit nicely on a desk top. You can buy a reote for it, but its not included. If for some reason your computer fails to work with this out of the box, Gefen will tell you to buy a DVI Detective. Or 2.

Other Thoughts: I paid $150 for the unit, but to get up and running I had to pay an extra $69 for the DVI Detective and $30 for the remote. $250 is really steep for a KVM that runs 2 machines. BTW, NewEgg does not carry either of the add-ons I had to buy.
