3 out of 5 eggsWorked after updating firmware

Pros: High security; good value. After applying a firmware update (obtained after 4 email rounds with Kingston tech support; see below), the drive works great.

Cons: After receiving this product I found it wouldn't allow access to the encrypted volume; same result on 2 different Win7/x64 computers. After I provided detailed information about the problem, Kingston tech support suggested various fixes; none worked. I finally RMA'd drive through Newegg; rec'd a new replacement. But same problems... Another couple rounds with Kingston tech support; their final suggestion: "try latest update for the drive" (they provided a password-protected link to their FTP site for the updater). After downloading & installing, drive works perfectly. My gripes (and the reason for knocking off two eggs): a) Why was this drive shipping with 3-year-old firmware? b) Why doesn't Kingston readily post all firmware updates (I certainly checked their website for such, but not publicly posted); and c) Why did it take 4 email from them before they suggested the updater? This wasted lots of my time, & Newegg's time, and postage $$. Sheesh!

Other Thoughts: I normally never post product reviews on Newegg, but I always read the many helpful reviews others have posted prior to buying. I suggest to those who've bought this drive that if you have problems, be sure to email Kingston tech support and ask for the updater (file name DT4000_Updater3006_Win3012HIDi_Mac3012.exe) before wasting your time with other troubleshooting efforts; might save you a lot of time.

3 out of 5 eggsNOT For LINUX

Pros: Does what it says
reasonably priced (paid $30)

Cons: No support for Linux
Will not mount under Wine either
This is not documented in the Newegg overview or details
Support is not available using Kingston's web site - it will not accept any number found on the packaging as the model number for this device - which it requires in order to accept a support request.

Other Thoughts: I wanted a secure device that I can use on my job, which requires accessing many computers that use Linux as well as Windows and MacOS. Hardware encryption seemed like the right answer for this need. Why make a highly portable device, then cripple it so that it works on some systems but not others?

5 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: A good balance of Tech specs vs. Cost.
Also a recognized name in memory (Kingston).
Security: HardwareAES Encryption adds no overhead for host computer.
Not below average but not the best in this market, for the price it's a good balance.

Not bottom, not top in this

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: For most critical applications I go with IronKey "REAL" security, but this Kingston model i smy "daily driver" for moving secured data, of moderate security threats. For the price hardly anything is better, IronKey costs 4x+ more.
Also for memory in general I used to flirt witrh Corsair and now strictly CRUCIAL. CRUCIAL unfortunately didn't have any secured AES USBflashdrive to offer so I took this Kingston.
I used Kingstons many years ago before Corsair/Crucial.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable and Affordable

Pros: +Rugged
+Security soft works on all computers

Cons: +Don't hybernate your computer with unsaved application data - you will be locked out ;)
+Can't boot from it ;)

Other Thoughts: I've used this drive DAILY for over 6 months. I own the 32GB version and keep all my documents on the flash drive. I alternate between computers throughout the day and run mostly portable apps. The only time I noticed problems with speed is when some poorly designed program was trying to read/write some large number of data files every 20 min.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive

Pros: Hardware-based encryption protocol, 256-bit AES, extremly fast, good for stoping nosey famliy members who want to pry into your personal life. Drive shuts itself down then reformats itself after maxium ammount of failed passcode attempts.

Cons: Cosumer grade, encryption which means the drives security protocols can be circumvented by someone with the time and knowledge. Outdated encryption sceme, no Anubis Cipher, which trumps the sceme on this drive. No UI to reset maxuim ammount of failed passcode attempts.

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent quality drive, because it's a Kingston drive I prefer Kingston mainly because they've been around for ages and actually have expernice fabricating memory type products mainly computer RAM. I do highly recomend this product not only because it's a Kingston product, but it's good for storing personal day-to-day files that you don't want certain people poking their nose into, and if they attempt to to many times the drive will run a self destruct protocol and erase itself thanks to the hardware based encryption.

5 out of 5 eggsSecure and feels solid

Pros: Fast read/write. Unit feels very solid and the swivel doesn't move out of place on it's own.

Cons: Isn't water proof or milspec. Doesn't work with Linux.

Other Thoughts: Good bang for the buck and since I didn't need mulspec or water proof to keep my customers data secure between computers it's well worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsReally awesome drive

Pros: Speed, encryption, ease of use.

Cons: Make sure to always use the program to remove it from the system.

Other Thoughts: Considering the encryption, this usb drive is the fastest I have ever owned.
