5 out of 5 eggsYou need USB 3.0 proper drivers

Pros: You HAVE to have proper functioning drivers installed on your computer for your USB 3.0 to function at USB 3.0 speeds!

Cons: NONE

Other Thoughts: Come on, people. Find proper USB drivers--they don't come with Windows. Your USB 3.0 ports will work at or below USB 2.0 speeds IF you don't have good USB 3.0 drives installed on your computer and you might not even know it! Test your USB 3.0 port with a known good USB 3.0 device and see the speeds in the Windows transfer speed mini-window and you will see if it's good or not. If it stays below 30MB/s then you need to find proper USB 3.0 drivers. Make sure you test afterwards after you install new drivers because there are USB 3.0 drivers out there that might not work with your USB 3.0 chip and are designed for another hardware but WILL install fine (this happened to me before.)

5 out of 5 eggsSYBA Card Reader

Pros: This thing is small, portable, USB 3.0, and has worked in every computer I own with no hassle.

Cons: none

1 out of 5 eggsNot USB 3 compatible

Pros: Nice physical design, no excess cable

Cons: I got one of these over a month ago and it would not work properly with my USB 3 ports. Very slow transfers. It was a lot faster on USB 2. I used SYBA's easy RMA service and they sent me another one. This one seems to have the same problem. It is actually faster on USB 2 and it runs slower with cards that are rated for faster speeds. This was not an expensive item, so I'm just going to throw it away this time. I bought a Kingston card reader from Newegg a couple of weeks ago and it is working fine.

Other Thoughts: I only use Compact Flash cards, so my problem may not apply to people using other types of flash memory cards. I'm running Windows 7 -64 on a Gigabyte Z68 class motherboard.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

This product is USB 3.0 compatible.

Note that the performance of the Memory card you are using depends on what is advertised on the memory card itself.

You will not be able to experience USB 3.0 speeds if the Memory card cannot perform at the speeds.

Thank you for leaving us your valuable feedback.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective? Not USB 3.0 compatible

Pros: Nice physical design for my needs. The little card reader has about a two inch length of stiff USB cable permanently attached. No separate cords to mess around with. The short cable is stiff enough that it holds the card reader fairly rigidly next to your computer's USB port, even with a card inserted. This might not be good for everyone, but I liked it. It also held my Compact Flash card very precisely.

When plugged into ordinary USB 2.0 ports, the file transfer speed was about 33 MBytes/second. When plugged into USB 3.0 ports it was only about 15 MBytes/second and there were some software glitches that suggested a system problem. This was using an expensive 1000X Compact Flash card that works fine in all other devices.

Other Thoughts: I'd return this, but I already threw away the packaging and it's a hassle repacking and taking it to the shipping store. I'll just eat this one and try something else. Maybe I'll give it to a friend who doesn't have any USB 3.0 ports.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,

We have sold hundreds of this product and this displayed no issues according to the information we have on it.

It is normal for a USB 3.0 device not able to perform at USB 3.0 speeds if plugged into a USB 2.0 port.

This product is USB 3.0 compatible. We use this device nearly every time we use CF or SD cards for testing.

The read/write also depend on the preformance labeled usually on the memory card packaging itself.

We are more than happy to provide all of our customers with a prompt exchange whenever a product becomes defective.

SYBA offers an online RMA form, the user can easily fill out the form and submit it for a quick RMA return and exchange. It is SYBA's policy to answer all customer inquiries within 24 hours (M-F)

Thank you for purchasing one of our products, and for leaving us your valuable feedback.

5 out of 5 eggsSYBA READER

Pros: -----------------------------------------------------------------------
CrystalDiskMark 3.0 x64 (C) 2007-2010 hiyohiyo
Crystal Dew World :
* MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s]

Sequential Read : 44.113 MB/s
Sequential Write : 15.307 MB/s
Random Read 512KB : 39.382 MB/s
Random Write 512KB : 2.673 MB/s
Random Read 4KB (QD=1) : 12.380 MB/s [ 3022.4 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=1) : 0.024 MB/s [ 5.7 IOPS]
Random Read 4KB (QD=32) : 13.303 MB/s [ 3247.8 IOPS]
Random Write 4KB (QD=32) : 0.025 MB/s [ 6.1 IOPS]

Test : 1000 MB [I: 4.7% (357.8/7647.1 MB)] (x7)
Date : 2013/03/01 20:40:16
OS : Windows 7 SP1 [6.1 Build 7601] (x64)

Tested with CF card by RiDATA "Lightning Series" 233x speed (quite old--CFs gone up to 1000x speed rating but since I already have it I might as well use it and I do--for very important files) and Intel i7 8 thread CPU on native USB 3.0 motherboard implementation on Dell Precision M4600.

Works fine and fast unlike the previous review states--in the case below the speed is limited by the speed of the card and NOT by the reader NOR by the bus--that is why there was no significant difference between 2.0 and 3.0 USB test results... a case of ignorance.

Cons: I would like to get 95MB/s SD card "Extreme Pro" series by Sundisk soon and plan on updating my review if possible to include that benchmark--in reference to:

Model SDSDXPA-032G-A75

Other Thoughts: I've gotz this reader for 14 egg shells shipped so it's a good deal in my opinion whenever you get it bumping on a shell shocker like that start making an omelet.

Oh, yeah, this thing is very durable so no worries.

4 out of 5 eggsMarginally faster then USB 2.0 reader

Pros: Small (half the size of the Sandisk reader), lots of formats read
No special drivers needed on Windows 8...shows up as a bunch of drives.

Cons: USB cable is directly attached to it...if it ever fails, you have to throw it out.
Marginally faster than a Sandisk USB 2.0 card reader on the same USB 3.0 port.

Other Thoughts: Can't believe Newegg made this 5% cheaper the week after I got it :-P

I tested w/ a Sandisk Extreme III SD card (fastest I had) and it makes a marginal difference. I downloaded the USB Flash Benchmark tool and tested on the same USB 3.0 port w/ the same card and it read roughly 2MB/sec faster vs than the Sandisk reader...writes were roughly 1.5MB/sec faster before tailing off at file sizes of 512KB. Fastest speeds were maintained when streaming 4MB+ files.
Max read speed 22.5MB/sec for 512KB+ files (vs. 19.5MB/sec w/ Sandisk USB 2.0 reader).
Max write speed 19MB/sec for 4MB+ files (vs. 17.5MB/sec w/ Sandisk USB 2.0 reader).

Maybe it'll go faster w/ high bandwidth CF cards, but if you want to make use of your USB 3.0 ports, apparently, it won't make much of a difference w/ this reader and fast SD cards :-P
