Works
- Pros: Works.
- Cons: Not the speed I expected.
- Pros: Works fine with my digital camera for recording high-def video 720p and 1080p. Low price.
- Cons: Slow reading. It usually takes about an hour to transfer a near-full card from the camera to PC.
- Other Thoughts: Slow transferring doesn't bother me much since I don't mind just leaving and forgetting it for a good hour. It never had write issues even when recording full 1080p though. For the price, I consider that just a minor inconvenience as I rarely use the whole card.
This EeePC card does not work in my EeePC
- Pros: I purchased this SDHC card because it was branded EeePC and wanted to play it safe and get the one that was certified to work with my EeePC. It didn't.
This SDHC card manufactured by AData works fine in an external card reader. The problem is not with the SD card. The card does not work in my EeePC due to a defective onboard card reader on the ASUS 701 netbook.
- Cons: I held off buying an SD card for my EeePC, because I didn't really need the additional storage yet, and I was waiting for the price to come down. Unfortunately, when I discovered this problem I was about 4 months beyond the 1 year warranty, so ASUS is of no help.
This is a known manufacturing defect. Just do a search for "card reader problem" on the eeeuser forum. It is sort of the luck of the draw. Not all users are affected.
This problem appears to be related to the card reader chip overheating. I am guessing I have an earlier production EeePC with the defect. When they discovered the problem, they probably slipstreamed in a correction, so that later users don't have the same problem.
- Other Thoughts: Except for this recently discovered problem, I am happy with my ASUS 701 EeePC in all other respects. However, since I am out of warranty, ASUS will not correct the defect.
In discussing this with ASUS technical support, I was given this advice: "Generally, I just can suggest you not using your SD card for a long time." BRILLIANT! Once you just stop using the card, your defective cardreader problem is solved!
As you can imagine, I am not all that happy with ASUS right now. If ASUS was a stand up company, they would take responsibility for their manufacturing defect, regardless of the term of warranty. It is interesting to note that some reviews of the ASUS 701 EeePC refer to a 2 year warranty. Apparently mine is 1 year.
I like my EeePC, but this will give me pause before I purchase from ASUS again. All manufacturers will have these types of problems from time to time. It is what they do to correct them that separates good companies from GREAT companies.
