1 out of 5 eggsErratic Speeds

Pros: Cheap price point. Supports all kinds of different cards.

Cons: Cheap plastic, card doesn't sit firmly in the reader (hangs more than half way out), erratic transfer speeds.

Other Thoughts: In my use, the speeds reading data from CF cards has been extremely erratic. Reading Nikon RAW (.NEF) from UDMA7 cards, the transfer rate is all over the place. Using MacBook Pros both retina and non-retina with USB 3.0 running 10.8.

Spikes around 85 MB/s, but will immediately drop back to 0-10 MB/s before spiking again. Ran multiple tests, same cards, same files, same cords, with the Rosewill and the more expensive "L-Brand", (also tried different cards and cords to rule those out as the problem) and the L-brand hovers between 80-90 MB/s every time. Not sure what the problem is with the Rosewill, but the problem has been consistent for nearly 3 months.

Looking at the transfer speed graph, reminds me of a polygraph during a lie. Should be more of a smooth line with subtle peaks and dips.

One thing of note, when creating an exact disk image copy, the Rosewill does hover consistently around 75 MB/s. Perhaps its the fact of transferring thousands of small files instead of one big file, but regardless I don't think the hardware should be discriminating as to what sort of files its reading. Hopefully others have better luck, but curious if anyone is seeing the same results as me.

I'd seek a refund, but considering it was only a $12.99 gamble, I'm not going to waste my time on the phone / with the process of recouping the loss.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat

Pros: Works well in 3.0 usb port on my HP laptop (Win7) with my CF card. It seems fast, although I don't have any way, nor the desire, to measure the speed. I plug it in as needed. Good, heavy, well-made cord. Probably would cost as much to buy as the gadget itself. This cable is top shelf.

Cons: none. No issues at all. The cord is short for a reason (a good reason). How do I feel about the plain, black finish? I don't care.

Other Thoughts: I use it for photos on my CF card from Nikon DSLR. I was skeptical based on other reviews, but I think a lot of reviewers have their own equipment problems, and low skill level, so I try to ignore them. They should try it on other machines, or let a skillful person evalute it, before they condemn the product.

2 out of 5 eggsIt's fast, but beware the CF card pins bend easily

Pros: Fast USB 3.0 transfer rate.

Cons: The CF card slot is garbage. There's no tight guide for inserting the CF card. While inserting a CF card into my reader it bend the pins inside the slot. I spent an hour with a magnifying glass, two extremely thin flat head screw drivers and a ton of patience straightening the pins out. I'm worried the pin that bent is so loose now that inserting my CF card next time will cause the pin to break off entirely and remain stuck INSIDE my CF card, rendering both the reader AND the CF card useless.

4 out of 5 eggsReads cards find

Pros: SDXC amd SDHC format supported

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Was looking for a SDXC card reader. I found this one and even though it seems to have problems with USB 3.0, it works on USB 2.0

1 out of 5 eggsJust doesn't work

Pros: Came with a cord, well built, lots of options for many cards.

Cons: No matter what I try to do, I just can't get this device to work. It'll import for a brief second or two before an error out. Updated drivers, tried different ports, put it on USB 2.0, and even tried a different computer w/ USB 2.0 as well, but same results. Pretty much going into the garbage at this point.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately, it ended up being a mistake to get this product. Mobo is an Asus M4A87TD EVO with Windows 7 x64.

2 out of 5 eggsWorks

Pros: Works with many types of memory cards.

Cons: Increased my bootup time from 17 sec to over 2 minutes. Called tech support and they told me I should just plug in the card reader when I need it. Sounds like a bad idea, but oh well.

2 out of 5 eggsFast, Cheap and bent pins

Pros: Cheap, compact and the USB 3.0 is much faster than my old USB 2.0 reader

Cons: Use CF cards exclusively. If you are not careful when removing the card you will bend the pins. The slot is is not very deep.

Other Thoughts: If you don't use CF cards this would be a good unit.

Pros: Works

Cons: increased my bootup time from 17 sec to over a minute. I'm not sure what its doing, but I think it has something to do with the drivers windows is loading up.
