Rugged but unstable on Vista 64-bit

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Beautifully engineered, military grade memory stick. It looks like this is the Personal edition of IronKey rather than the Basic that I expected to receive. If you need a high level of security (defense industry), I don't know of a better portable storage solution.
Cons: The installation instructions are poor. It appears this product mounts two filesystems: an I: disk for the encrypted filesystem and something called "Unlocker" which only occasionally shows a black key for an icon. Half the time the icon appears to the "missing" icon default used by Windows. On Vista 64-bit, double clicking on the "Unlocker" icon hung Explorer. On at least two occasions just plugging the device in rebooted my machine (reproduced on more than one USB port). There is no clear way to "Eject" the device for unmounting. The obvious way to do so results in either a hang or an additional H: CD-ROM device mounted (where did that come from?). In any case, the I: drive remains mounted but inaccessible.

I still cringe everytime I need to use it. You can eventually get it to "work" but there appear to be serious issues on 64-bit Vista at least. Maybe newer drivers will fix these issues.

I'd like to access the CrytoChip on the device but I don't see an SDK for programming it
Other Thoughts: I really wanted to love this product, but am somewhat disappointed. It should just "work" like any other flash drive but it's not very intuitive without careful documentation.

Pros: This is not simply a "rugged" hard drive. Yes, it is water resistant and incredibly rugged. Yes, it offers encryption.

What makes it unique are two hardware functions. First, it uses a different flash memory technology, good for 100,000 writes instead of the 5,000 in conventional flash drives, so it will take 20x longer to wear out the chip. OH, DUH!

Second, the FIRMWARE built into the stick allows someone to guess a password 3 times, remove it and retry 3 times (for a total of nine tries) and then on the tenth attempt to hack your files--it permanently deletes all the information on the stick.

All the other software features that Ironkey offer are just icing on the cake compared to this. AFAIK no one else uses the same quality memory, and a data destruction CHIP to ensure your data will not be stolen.

If you are looking for cheap USB memory, this is not it. If you are looking for military/government grade data security--that's the market this stick is targeted to.
Cons: Some of the setup and software options take some figuring out, and can only be fully configured for one user, not totally reset if you want to pass it on or give it away later. Or, you can ignore them and just use it as one helluva secure memory stick.

The only vulnerability is if a keyboard logger is in use on the computer you plug it in to, and someone captures your data key and then later on, steals your stick and uses your key to access it. Otherwise--your data is secure.
Other Thoughts: Expensive, but nothing else competes with it.

Cheaper options out there

Pros: This drive is a tank. Drive your car over it if you want to. The system is very very secure. The internet security feature routes all your trafic through ironkey's server- a tad slow, but usable.
Cons: You can do everything and ironkey can with a normal thumbdrive and free software. Do a search for "how to encrypt thumb drive" "tor thumbdrive" etc... Save yourself some money.
Other Thoughts: Do NOT test the auto lock out feature- i tried to and hosed my drive. I was told, incorrectly, that I'd be able to reformat it afterwords.
