5 out of 5 eggsI *love* this NAS

Pros: Very easy to set up. Runs cool. Looks great. Fast.

Cons: The BitTorrent client isn't very configurable. USB/print server doesn't work with HP Color LaserJet 2550L. But these are minor complaints.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very sleek in design and very quiet (no fan). Aluminum casing discipated heat very efficiently. I put recommend WD 500GB hard drive in it and it works FLAWLESS. Really space saving since I live in the very small condo. I have not tried the printer function yet.

Cons: The documentation is not very clear. I have to trial-and-error. But that is probably depends with your expertise level, too. However, the topic lay-out was very easy. I can only wish there is more detail for each function.

Other Thoughts: It may be seem a bit pricey at times, but with all its features and ease of use I think this one is money well spent.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Feature Set

Pros: Very good software set included to serve as iTunes and media server. Setup using the included disk is very painless. Good manual on CD.

Cons: Hardware install is easy, with one exception. Illustration suggests the unit slides apart from the ends. HOWEVER, its really a clamshell and needs to be pulled apart from the sides along an almost invisible seam in the aluminum case. Almost broke it and my nails.

Other Thoughts: Put a 1 TB Hitachi in this to serve up MP3 with the included media server and for general backup. Very Nice.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat product

Pros: High functionality & quiet. Does everything that it should and more.

Cons: None worth mentioning.

Other Thoughts: While there are certainly lots of forum posts about HDD not spinning down when the TS-109 isn't being used, my Hitachi 1TByte drive works just fine. Users need to remember that if external access requests are generated by services that they have enabled (e.g. web server, FTP), then the HDD won't spin down, nor should it!

5 out of 5 eggsLove this product!

Pros: Quiet! High level of function, easy setup, excellent documentation. Simple USB interface to inexpensive UPS (APC BK350) allowing graceful shutdown in the case of power failure. Active support forum with useful solutions to problems.

Cons: It ain't perfect, but it's the best that I've seen. The built-in UPS communication test indicated that my UPS wouldn't work, but in reality it works just fine.

Other Thoughts: I started with a TS-209, but found the fan too noisy; the case also transmitted disk access noise to an alarming degree (flunked the spousal approval test). The TS-109 is much, much quieter -- now everyone is happy!

1 out of 5 eggsBasic requirements of NAS totally missing

Pros: Very highly featured. Elegant understated design. No fan, so silent (excepting for inability to spin hard disc down).

Cons: Unable to spin the hard disk down when not being used. Despite months of complaints on user forum (which, unfo, I didn't read before buying), Also, downloads of latest firmware from website are (a) unbelievably slow and (b) always fail. You need to search the forums to find a mirror site.

Appletalk networking incompatible with Leopard.

Other Thoughts: I so wanted to like this device. But a NAS device that keeps the disc running virtually 7*24 when nothing is happening? (Yes, I exhaustively closed down the services, disabled NETBIOS on any Windows PC on the network, read the forum, etc.). Do you really want to go through the same frustration?

5 out of 5 eggsSuper Buy

Pros: Super easy. Works on first turn on. Does what it was designed to do and more.
Open it up, install hard drive (easy), plug it in and go...

Cons: Initial Cost. (But worth it.)

Other Thoughts: Replace a NEW Windows Home Server with the Qnap and what an improvement. Easy to use, easy to update (almost monthly updates) to keep up with improvements. Share files on your home network or the world(WWW.) Easy included back-up program that copies files to the server where you can retrieve from any computer on the network. Too many options to describe and you'll never use them all.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Fast - Data transfers about twice as fast+ as TS-101 series. All the features of the TS-101 plus... NFS, Windows Active Directory support, Web server includes support for PHP/MySQL and SQLite. Extended FTP functions. Configurable Management Port. IP Filtering. Great for small business/SOHO. I would even say great set of features for the Home User. Small and yet powerful.

Cons: Have to update the firmware right out of the box, although the installation program does step you through this.

Other Thoughts: This is my third purchase of a QNAP product. The first were the TS-101's. They did the job intended, but I was mainly looking for something a little faster but all the other extras are a nice addition.

While the unit does run warm, the concept is that the heat is being pulled away from the interior and as such the case can get quite warm to the touch. Some sort of cross ventilation over the unit would probably be useful. I have been running a TS-101 (same exact case design of the TS-109 Pro) with a 750g hd 24/7 since December 2006 with no signs of any problems. The other has been running with a 400g 24/7 for a year and 2 months... still kickin.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product !

Pros: This product is so cool. It comes with MySQL and PHP installed. WOW! How cool is that. It is VERY fast as well. Somewhere online I read it has a 500Mhz CPU which I believe it! The php and mysql run so fast!!! I'm actually using it as an intranet for our small business. Works perfectly for that. Pretty much it works exactly as advertised but don't make any assumptions before you buy.

Cons: 1) The firmware it comes with sucks. You have to upgrade immediately.

2) It really should have come with cURL and mcrypt preinstalled. This means you can't run many shopping cart engines on it. Unfortunately there is no way to install it too. The designers should have really thought of that.

4) The file permissions is really wierd. There should be different file permissions in FTP mode and Network mode (as available in many/most other cheaper and crappier NAS products). Perhaps it is a limitation of the embedded linux they put in it.

5) Admin panel does not work well with Mozilla

6) Despite whatever the manufacturers website says, it runs WAY TOO HOT! I bought a couple of heat sinks and have put them everywhere but not helping too much as no where for the heat to escape. I hope my 7200rpm hard drive does not die out on me in the long run :(

Other Thoughts: I put down a lot of cons hoping that the manufacturers will see my review and upgrade the firmware. This product is really great and sets the standard for all other NAS servers to follow. No other NAS server I've seen comes even close!
