5 out of 5 eggsHandy device

Pros: Low cost, decent features

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: Very handy, easy to use device. Decent solution for sharing files, sharing a printer, and storing a backup copy of files. The printer function works like a shared USB port--you still need to install the print drivers locally on each PC.

4 out of 5 eggsSlow USB Speed

Pros: All the good things you read here are true; it's an excellent device.

Cons: I back up monthly to a USB drive that then goes offsite. Under the previous version 2 of the operating system, the backup took about an hour to run. Now, under DSM3, it takes 3 hours. Tech Support & the Synology engineers say they can't do anything about it, and they spent a lot of their (and my) time trying.

5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Network Unit!

Pros: --Many/various capabilities as a network server. Fairly easy to set up with some technical knowledge required. User selectable hard drives for capacity and capabilities.
--Fast network accessibility!
--Other than below no complaints thus far . . . runs very well, cool, quiet, and efficient.

Cons: --Setting up unit initially - the setup software looked for a *.pat file which I had to find and "guess" which one was the right one off the disk. Manufacture should have had options from which to click/select and the setup program should have then gone to select the appropriate file on the install CD.
--Took "forever" for the RAID 1 array to setup - over 14 hours!

Other Thoughts: --This is replacing a first generation WD My Book World which was much easier to set up but exceedingly-slug-slow!
--I set this up with two Western Digital AV-GP WD20EVDS 2TB SATA in a RAID 1 array - giving me just under 2TB of space. Note these are "green" drives and function fine with this unit in spite of some previous comments that green drives do not work with it.
--Thus far I love it and highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 eggsWell worth the few extra bucks

Pros: Easy to set up and initially get going.
New firmware upgrade was simple and smooth.
When you are ready its easy to add other built-in services like uPnP, simple wizard-like interface to turn on the basics.
I love that I can run my My Sql databases directly from the device, and even install phpMyAdmin directly on the DS209.
Great user interface. Very nice use of the EXT JS desktop.

Cons: None that should sway anyone against buying.
(minor) MySql user authentication seems to take a long time.

Other Thoughts: I've had a series of cheap NAS devises, the theory being it just needs to serve files. Now that I've seen what you can do with a rich NAS environment I'm never going back.
Save yourself some pain, run spinrite on your drive before installing it!

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome, Stable NAS!

Pros: Phenomenal performance. Continue to learn of included features. Rock solid performance, reasonably easy install. Has worked so well I removed Windows2000 server from the network that was performing the network storage service. You will not be disappointed with this unit. Manufacturer web site has great support information.

Cons: Do not touch it while it does it multi hour(s) long set up and formatting of 1T byte raid volumes. It will finish on it's own!

5 out of 5 eggsThis thing is awesome!

Pros: replaced a POC D-Link DNS-323 with this and the difference could not be more profound. The management interface is a delight to use, has every single feature you could ever want from a NAS. And my transfer rates went from 15MB/s read and 8 MB/s write to 60MB/s read and 45 MB/s write. Absolutely amazing!

Cons: None

1 out of 5 eggsNever again

Pros: none - it never would install. Wasted too many hours with support and troubleshooting.

Cons: Spent three days going around with tech support - tried every suggestion they had and everything I could think of - would never finalize the install. Support said the unit was not defective. I've installed several Netgear NAS units with no issues. Bought an LG N2R1D Diskless System Super Multi NAS and had it up and running in 15 minutes.

Other Thoughts: If the unit I had, and the wasted time spent with tech support is any indication - I'd stay away from these.
