5 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS -

Pros: setup was very fast & easy. ~3.5 hours to build volume (750GB RAID1), ~10 minutes to set up shared & user mount points. can be used as a windows backup target. runs cool; <50C processor, <40C for WD RE2-GP disk x 2. low power; <20W idle, <30W with load.

Cons: fan is louder than i would have expected. may try to drop fan to 2.5" disk mode to see if this has an impact on disk temperature and/or noise.

Other Thoughts: copied huge backup file at a sustained 700Mb/s on a gigabit network.

5 out of 5 eggsSynology DS209+II

Pros: Good performance, easy physical installation, excellent features and functions. Browser user interface very good once to become familiar with it.

Cons: Set-up takes longer than I expected as the setup for some functions is not intuitive and hidden in sub menus.

Other Thoughts: After one week, I have found the Synology NAS an excellent product. Set up, once you play with the user interface and become accustomed to it, is straight forward. Installation of disk units very easy. Make sure to check compatibility charts at Synology web site before ordering your disk units. I have set my unit up with two 1-TB drives using RAID 1. Two other options are available with 2 drives ... the Synology standard configuration (whatever that is ... I think it is RAID 1) and RAID 0. According to Synology, if one drive fails you can replace it with new drive and it will rebuild the new drive automatically. You can also upgrade to larger drives if you replace one at a time. It is a well thought out product and I recommend it to anyone thinking of a home NAS.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid NAS, Great Cache

Pros: Great functional NAS for home media/backups, time machine took some messing with, but I blame Apple for that!

Has been running great as an iScsi connection for virtual machines on ESX4 environment of a home lab, very happy with the performance.

Amazing simplicity in firmware updates, software setup took less than 10 minutes. Disk formatting was finished overnight on terabyte SATA drives.

Cons: Time machine issues due to OSX limitations. Somewhat loud fan, but cold>quiet in my opinion.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it...

Pros: Superb unit. Has all the bells and whistles that one would expect from a high end NAS unit. Stable as all hell, and Manufacturer actually updates the firmware and client administration software. and updating said changes have been trouble free.

very easy to set up, I purchased 2 1.5TB drives at the same time and had everything up and running within 15 minutes (sans formatting) in raid 0.

The setup for the synology product line is very easy, I am able to quickly share a large amount of files on whatever network I drop it onto. I was able to easily set it up to allow read only operations for guests and still have the ability to allow write operations to specific folders (I could have even gone as far as setting up quotas per user or group had I needed)

Cons: Price, checking around now I have found that synology has better options than when I made my purchase. If I were to be buying a unit now I would be looking more at the DS409slim diskless, or the DS409+ Diskless. The price is the same at time of writing (Oct-09) and I would have been able to fit in more drives.

One other thing is my unit came with the DSM 2.1-0845 firmware installed (initial release) and packaged with a 'Synology assistant' app that was 2 releases out of date. When I tried to manage the disk station on vista-64 it would try to run my IE-64 app instead of my defualt browser of Firefox. This is easily bypassed by browsing to the NAS IP in your browser of choice, and updating to the latest software and firmware (painless) completely resolves the issue.

Other Thoughts: When I bought this I was looking for a high end portable NAS unit. That's exactly what I got. my only regret is that the DS409slim came out soon after I got this and the drives. for the same price I could have a unit only slightly bigger and able to run raid 5 for a little more drive redundancy. being limited to 2.5" drives would have been a small pain, but 1TB drives in that size are right around the corner. *shrug* I wont take away eggs because the manufacturer produces a product that improves on an already great unit.

5 out of 5 eggsReplacement of a file server

Pros: Works as described in specifications, so far no issues. Easy to configure, extensive FAQs on Synology website. I really like USBCopy feature.

Cons: Perhaps price, if compared to other 2-bay NAS models on the market. On the other hand, currently it is one of the fastest units (Sep/2009).

Other Thoughts: This unit replaces a file serve run on Windows 2003 Server. I wish we had done this earlier.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing!

Pros: This NAS has every little thing you could ever want, and then some! It is very easy to set up, has a great GUI, and supports RAID 0, 1, and JBOD.

Cons: File system has to be either FAT32 or EXT3 (EXT3 is a common linux format). The drive can only read NTSC drives.

Other Thoughts: I have 2 - 1TB Seagate Baracuda 7200 RPM drives in a RAID 1 configuration and it's working great! I also have an external ESATA drive doing a full backup just in case i'm away from the office and don't have access to the internet. It's a great setup! I'd suggest visiting there website to learn more about this product.

5 out of 5 eggsSynology DS209+II

Pros: This is a great NAS. It replaces two other NAS units that have been in service for several years.

I currently have two printers connected, 1 laser and 1 inkjet. Print server works great.

Also running two 1GB hard drives in Raid 1. Remap your My Documents to a folder on this unit and have peace of mind.

Also have the USB Copy feature enabled and it works very well. Nice to be able to backup your flash drive in case you lose or break it.

This unit is also very quiet.

I would recommend it for anyone that really wants a great NAS.

Cons: It is a little pricey when you add in the cost of the unit and the price of two hard drives to get the RAID 1, but it is well worth the cost IMO.

5 out of 5 eggsSynology DS209+II Diskless SATA NAS

Pros: This is a great NAS that I operate in RAID 1. Currently have a total of 3 NAS units from various manufacturers. Eventually will be running this unit as my only NAS. Map your My Documents to this unit to the folder of your choice and you no longer have to worry about losing any data.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Running a couple of Seagate 1TB SATA drives, so there is plenty of storage space for music and photos.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: The device is much improved over earlier generations. The new ports on the device work great on the network and the recovery options for IP addresses and such is very easy (if you input the wrong information). The raid build on a 1TB mirror took about 5hrs, but after it was built the system reported health status on both drives. A very good NAS unit for the price. The system is quiet and does not generate too much heat for being compact.

Cons: Because the host OS is linux/unix based you cannot assign NTFS permissions on shares. This is the biggest negative I have found. Another concern is that the case is plastic.
