Synology DiskStation DS213+ is a high-performance, two-bay, all-in-one NAS server for SMB users. It delivers the fastest encrypted data transfer rate, and yet it offers extreme power-savings at merely 2.64 watts of energy consumption during System Hibernation. The new System Hibernation mode is designed to actively listen for network activities to quickly resume the system back to full operations. To ensure secure and efficient file sharing, the DS213+ boasts an AES 256-bit encrypted read and write speed of 49.6 MB/sec and 24.7 MB/sec respectively. It runs DiskStation Manager 4.0 (DSM 4.0), the operating system of every Synology NAS Server. DSM 4.0 provides a rich office application to boost user productivity and simplify tasks, all on a sleek user interface optimized for multitasking. The DS213+ offers a full list of business features in a network-attached storage solution that centralizes backup, protects critical assets, and shares files quickly and efficiently.

  • newegg Dual-Core CPU with Floating-Point Unit Powered by a dual-core 1.067 GHz processor, the DS213+ delivers an average read speed at 110.36 MB/sec and write speed at 84.31 MB/sec under RAID 1 configuration in a Windows environment. The built-in 64bit Floating-Point Unit accelerates decoding and encoding processes to enhance photo viewing at different resolutions.
  • newegg Energy efficient The support of multiple scheduled power on/off and System Hibernation can reduce power consumption and operation cosst. The Synology DS213+ delivers high performance when needed, but during low activity level it also uses a very small amount of power. During System Hibernation mode, it consumes only 2.6 watts of power to listen for network activities, and resumes back to operation in very short amount of time upon demand. Compared to shutting off the whole system, System Hibernation brings a closer balance between smart energy management and system responsiveness.
  • newegg SuperSpeed The DS213+ is equipped with an SD card slot for a plug-and-save solution, and an eSATA port for an external backup option. With two USB 3.0 ports for an up to 5Gbps data transmission speed – 10 times faster than USB 2.0 – the DS213+ takes less time for data transfer for external hard drives and consumes less power.
  • newegg Rich Office Applications The Synology DiskStation DS213+ runs on the renowned Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) multitasking operating system. Offering a comprehensive list of business applications, the DS213+ can be customized to run multiple applications of your choice to fulfill the requirement of your business environment. It replaces several pieces of traditional network hardware with rich features designed specifically for workgroups and offices, such as antivirus, video surveillance, webmail, VPN, and LDAP directory services. Applications are managed in the Package Center, an application portal that hosts applications as ready-to-use packages. This ensures high software integration and one-click-installation to eliminate guesswork during installation. Additional approved third-party PHP web applications, such as content management, customer relationship management, and e-commerce systems, can be hosted on the DS213+ by using Web Station with support for PHP/MySQL web content.
  • newegg Hassle-free System Installation Web Assistant is a web-based utility that makes the DiskStation as easy to install as possible. Installation is done inside your existing web browser by setting up all vital system components in few simple steps. Combined with a quick-start widget, users can simultaneously tour the DSM operating system, and set it up to use right away.
  • newegg Effective Backup Solutions The Synology DS213+ offers a centralized backup target to consolidate fragmented and unstructured data across a network. A backup wizard is provided for backing up data from the DS213+ to another Synology DiskStation or any rsync server via an encrypted connection, or to an external hard drive via a USB 3.0 or eSATA connection. The wizard also makes it easy to back up DiskStation data to the cloud via Amazon S3 or STRATO HiDrive. Shared Folder Sync allows users to synchronize a specific folder from Synology DS213+ to another DiskStation, enabling users to share documents within their local office easily and safely with an encrypted connection.

4 out of 5 eggsVery impressed so far

Pros: This device does the minimum of what I needed it to do. It does a sync/backup for my machine and my wife's laptop automatically through the use of the free Data Replicator software. Easily allows you to create separate volumes and map/index them as network drives in Windows using the DiskStation Assistant software. The hardware within the DiskStation only lags when I'm moving a large amount of files and the wife is streaming programs recorded in hi-def at the same time (and the stutter STILL isn't all that noticeable). Very capable hardware in this little box. The DiskStation has a very, very, small footprint too.

Cons: Insanely bright power LED. If you want to use it as a home media server, plan ahead or use electrical tape! I still cannot access the DiskStation via Android mobile apps when I'm not using my WiFi despite running the EZ-Internet router setup. There's probably a setting I'm overlooking but it shouldn't be this difficult at this price point. Loses an egg for making claims about mobile device access it can't deliver on.

Other Thoughts: I used 2x2TB Seagate NAS drives in RAID 1 and created four volumes. One for my backup, one for my wife's backup, one for iTunes media, and one for Windows Media Center recorded programs. The only hiccup so far is that iTunes only allows one machine to access the shared database file at a time but that's a fault of iTunes, not the DiskStation. Overall I'm happy with this purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsNot worth the money for me

Pros: Very easy to set and operate
Apps that are also easy to setup

Cons: Apps are limited in their use and configuration.

Other Thoughts: I'm a system administrator so, I was expecting more abilities out of this device for the price they charge. My biggest mistake was letting it sit too long on my desk. After working with it for a little while I realize that it's not what I'm looking for and its too late to ask for a refund.

I knocked a few eggs off for the limited configuration options on the device and for newegg's short return policy.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: I've had this unit less than 24 hours, so all I can comment on is the setup procedure, it is simple. It is already doing what I got it for and I look forward to learning the many uses it has.

This is my 1st NAS, so I wasn't drawing on any experience to set it up.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Installed 2 WD 2TB Red HDs in RAID1, no problems at all.

Would suggest this to anybody looking for an NAS of this size.

Synology, Western Digital, and Newegg - works for me.

5 out of 5 eggsExactly What I Wanted

Pros: Extremely easy to setup, lots and lots and lots and lots of configuration options beyond just being a NAS. There are tons of plugins that do everything from being a webserver to an authentication server. All of it is quick and easy to use, and if you really want, you can log in to the shell and manually install whatever you want.

Cons: One of the drives I bought did not line up with one of the sata connectors in the back. I switched which drive was which slot, and that fixed it.

5 out of 5 eggsAMAZING!!

Pros: Easy to setup, VERY versatile, FAST (LanSpeedTest had me at 449.21Mb write and 329.19Mb read), great sturdy build, truly one of the BEST NAS servers I have every tried for the money!

Cons: Support is kinda slow at responding. Take usually a day to get back to you via email only. But hey, this thing is robust and you shouldn't really need to be calling them at all...

5 out of 5 eggsAnother Great Synology Product

Pros: Easy setup, DSM software has great features, great performance, light and small

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is the second model of NAS I've purchased from Synology and like the DS111, this model is a breeeze to set up. The DiskStation Manager (DSM) software takes the unit from a simple NAS to a capable small office server. I am using two WD WD20EFRX hard drives with this NAS and get nearly silent operation. Installing the drives is as easy as it gets. I chose to configure my drives with the Hybrid RAID option. Setting up the RAID is effortless as the DSM does all of the work. I use the NAS with both Windows and MACs and have no issues to report. Just a great product.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic product -- Synology Got it Right

Pros: Where to begin?
Fantastic, well-designed, highly usable management software; excellent build quality; extremely simple out-of-the-box setup; quiet.

The management software really sets this unit apart. Calling this only a "NAS" is like calling a Swiss Army Knife a "blade". What Synology is really offering here is a server+personal computer pre-bundled with everything you could possibly want to use in a networking, internet, and mainstream computing experience.

It's a fantastic product, and I'm glad I bought it.

Cons: None. Zero.

Other Thoughts: I came off of wrestling with two different Seagate products and wasting many hours. Let me tell you simply: this is a fantastic product built by a company who put time and energy into what it offers to consumers. It is *well* worth the modest increased price of adding two drives as compared to the bundled Seagate's drives.

I've become a Synology fan.
